Rate-of-work-word-problems/616507: If 12 men and 16 boys can do a piece of work in 5 days and 13 men and 24 boys can do the same piece of work in 4 days. How long will 7 men and 10 boys take to complete the same work?

Ans: 8 and 1/3 days
Sol: Let a man's daily work is x units and that of a boy is y units.
So total amount of work, W = 5(12x + 16y) = 4(13x + 24y)
=> 60x + 80y = 52x + 96y
=> 8x = 16y
=> x = 2y i.e. W = 5(24y + 16y) = 200y.
Now 7men and 10 boys' work of a day is = 7x + 10y = 14y + 10y = 24y.
So total days required to finish the work is = 200y/24y = 25/3 = 8 and 1/3 days.

C(4, 4) = 1.
Actually C(n, r) is the number of ways in which you can select r different things out of available n different things. As there is only one way to select 4 different things out of 4 different things available, that's why C(4, 4) = 1.
Remember that order doesn't matter in selection.

Money_Word_Problems/413341: Mr. Santos invested half of his money at 7% per year and a half at 8% per year. His annual income from the two investments was 7,500pesos. How much did he invest at each rate?

On an average he is getting 7.5% per annum i.e. 7.5 pesos per year at an investment of 100 pesos. Now as he's getting 7500 pesos from both of his investment, he'd have invested 100,000pesos.
Remember I am considering 7500pesos as the interest acrued only. But if it is the total amount including principal amount and interest, in that case the proncipal amount will be different and can be easily calculated as 7500/1.075 = 6976.75 pesos.

Mixture_Word_Problems/413408: A hospital staff mixed a 75% disinfectant solution with a 25% disinfectant solution. How many liters of each were used to make 20 L of a 45% disinfectant solution?

Answer 290122 by kamallohia(18) About Me  on 2011-02-24 00:41:51 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
We need to mix 2 parts of 75% solution with 3 parts of 25% solution to make 5 parts of 45% solution as 2*75 + 3*25 = 5*45.
So to make a 20L of 45% solution, we need to mix 8L of 75% solution and 12L of 25% solution.

log(4x+1) - log(x+1) = log3
=> log((4x+1)/(x+1)) = log3
=> (4x+1)/(x+1) = 3
=> 4x+1 = 3x+3
=> x = 2.

Graphs/118041: Celsius temperature readings can be converted to fahrenheit readings using the formula F = 9/5C+32. What is the fahrenheit temperature that corresponds to each of the following celsius temperatures: -10,0,15,100?

As F = (9/5)*C + 32.
When C = -10 , F = -18 + 32 = 14
When C = 0, F = 0 + 32 = 32
When C = 10, F = 18 + 32 = 50
When C = 100, F = 180 + 32 = 212

q^2-4/q^2-4+4=0
Just put q^2=x and rewrite the equation as
x-(4/x-4)+4=0
that is, x^2-20=0
=> x^2=20 and squaure root both sides yields
x= 20^0.5
and q=20^0.25

Length-and-distance/90117: If points A,B, and C lie on a coordinate line and points A and B have coordinates 15 and 7 respectively, then which of the possible coordinates for point C satisfy(ies) d(A,C) 1 solutions

Answer 65431 by kamallohia(18) About Me  on 2007-07-26 03:45:07 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If points A,B, and C lie on a coordinate line and points A and B have coordinates 15 and 7 respectively, then which of the possible coordinates for point C satisfy(ies) d(A,C) Here goes the solution.
Let x be the co-ordinate of point C then d(AC)=x-15,
and d(BC)=x-7 if x>7,15
then as given, (x-15)>(x-7)=> which can't be true for x>15
So let's assume 7 hence (15-x)<(x-7) => 2x>22 => x>11.
Now if x<7,15
then, (15-x)<(7-X) => which can't be true for x<7
Hence solution set is 11>x>15.
Hope this is clear.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
find the value for k so that 9m^2-kn^2 will have the factors 3m+7n and 3m-7n
Now factorize 9m^2-kn^2 and equate the factors with given factors as follows
9m^2-kn^2 = (3*m-n*k^0.5)(3*m+n*k^0.5)
equating with given factors we get
k^0.5=7 =>k=49.
Hope this is clear.

Equations/90127: Given P(x)=2x^2+13x+11 and Q(x)=2x^2+10x+8 Find P(x)+Q(x)
1 solutions

Answer 65429 by kamallohia(18) About Me  on 2007-07-26 03:08:36 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Just add the coefficients of x^2 , x and the constant terms.
Given P(x)=2x^2+13x+11 and Q(x)=2x^2+10x+8
So, P(x)+Q(x)= (2+2)x^2+(13+10)x+(11+8)
=>P(x)+Q(x)= 4x^2+23x+19.
Hope it's clear.
