Answer 211378 by josmiceli(9664) About Me  on 2010-04-15 20:10:26 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
It is telling you that 90 ft is one
side of the square, and it is asking you
for the distance between opposite corners.
The sides are all equal to 90 ft
and, for a square, the diagonal and a side
are in the ratio sqrt%282%29 to 1,
so I can say sqrt%282%29%2F1+=+x%2F90
Multiply both sides by 90
90%2Asqrt%282%29+=+x
x+=+1.414%2A90
x+=+127.3 ft (rounded to nearest 1/10 th)

Answer 211369 by josmiceli(9664) About Me  on 2010-04-15 19:16:14 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
In words:
(total quarts of soap)/(total quarts of solution) = 50%
Let a = quarts of 30% solution
Let b = quarts of 60% solution
------------------------------------
given:
a+%2B+b+=+60
b+=+60+-+a
----------------
%28.3a+%2B+.6b%29%2F60+=+.5
.3a+%2B+.6b+=+30
3a+%2B+6b+=+300
a+%2B+2b+=+100
By substitution:
a+%2B+2%2A%2860+-+a%29+=+100
a+%2B+120+-+2a+=+100
-a+=+-20
a+=+20
and, since
a+%2B+b+=+60
b+=+60+-+20

alcohol is 80% solution:
.8b
and
(1)%28.5a+%2B+.8b%29%2F10.5+=+.7
(2)a+%2B+b+=+10.5
----------------------
Multiply both sides of (1) by 10.5
(1) .5a+%2B+.8b+=+7.35
Multiply both sides of (2) by .5
and subtract (2) from (1)
(1).5a+%2B+.8b+=+7.35
(2)-.5a+-+.5b+=+-5.25
.3b+=+2.1
b+=+7
And from (2):
a+%2B+b+=+10.5

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The general rule is:
sqrt%28a%29%2Asqrt%28b%29+=+sqrt%28a%2Ab%29%0D%0A%7B%7B%7BA+=+sqrt%2830%29%2Asqrt%286%29
A+=+sqrt%2830%2A6%29
A+=+sqrt%28180%29
Now do the rule in reverse
A+=+sqrt%289%29%2Asqrt%2820%29
A+=+3%2Asqrt%2820%29
You can check this with a calculator:
sqrt%2830%29+=+5.477
sqrt%286%29+=+2.449
A+=+5.477%2A2.449
A+=+13.416
and
sqrt%2820%29+=+4.472
A+=+3%2A4.472
A+=+13.416

The chance that the 1st one is a heart is
13%2F52
Now 1 card is gone from the deck, so the chance that
the 2nd card is also a heart is
12%2F51
If you want the probability they are both hearts, multiply them:
%2813%2F52%29%2A%2812%2F51%29+=+156%2F2652
156%2F2652+=+.0588

Another way to ask this question is:
What is the perpendicular distance from
the origin to this line?
3x+%2B+4y+=+10
4y+=+-3x+%2B+10
y+=+%28-3%2F4%29x+%2B+5%2F2
Any line perpendicular to this line will
have slope = -%281%2F%28-3%2F4%29%29+=+4%2F3
The line through origin with this slope is:
y+=+%284%2F3%29%2Ax
Now the question is: What is the point where this line
intersects the given line?
By substitution:
3x+%2B+4%2A%284%2F3%29%2Ax+=+10
9x+%2B+16x+=+30
25x+=+30
x+=+6%2F5
and, substituting:
y+=+%284%2F3%29%2A%286%2F5%29
y+=+8%2F5
The distance formula is:
d+=+sqrt%28%286%2F5%29%5E2+%2B+%288%2F5%29%5E2%29
d+=+sqrt%2836%2F25+%2B+64%2F25%29
d+=+sqrt%28100%2F25%29
d+=+sqrt%284%29
d+=+2
the distance is (b) 2 units

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The best way to think of it is:
The axis of symmetry is x+=+k where k
is midway between the roots of the equation.
Then you find the vertex by plugging in x=a
back into the equation to get y , then x%2Cy
is the vertex.
An easy formula is: if the equation is in the form
y+=+ax%5E2+%2B+bx+%2B+c, then the axis of symmetry is at
x+=+-b%2F%282a%29
The y-intercept is at y+=+c
---------------------------------------
I'll do your 1st problem:
y+=+x%5E2+%2B+6x+-+11
The y-intercept is at y+=+-11
Now find roots:
x%5E2+%2B+6x++-+11+=+0
x%5E2+%2B+6x+=+11
x%5E2+%2B+6x+%2B+%286%2F2%29%5E2+=+11+%2B+%286%2F2%29%5E2
x%5E2+%2B+6x+%2B+9+=+11+%2B+9
%28x+%2B+3%29%5E2+=+20
x+%2B+3+=+sqrt%2820%29
x+=+-3+%2B-sqrt%2820%29
The axis of symmetry is midway between the 2 roots which are:
root1 =+-3+%2B+sqrt%2820%29
root2 = -3+-+sqrt%2820%29
-3 is midway between these roots, so
x+=+-3 is the axis of symmetry
And the simple formula x+=+-b%2F%282a%29 gives the same answer:
a+=+1
b+=+6
x+=+-6%2F%282%2A1%29
x+=+-3
Now plug this result back into the equation:
y+=+x%5E2+%2B+6x+-+11
y+=+%28-3%29%5E2+%2B+6%2A%28-3%29+-+11
y+=+9+-+18+-+11
y+=+-20
So, the vertex is at (-3,-20)
I'll plot the equation:
+graph%28+500%2C+500%2C+-10%2C+10%2C+-20%2C+20%2C+x%5E2+%2B+6x+-+11%29+

Let the width = W
Let the length = L
given:

so,

Multiply both sides by 3L
2L+=+84
L+=+42
The length is 42 in
Notice that the length is greater than the width, which is usually assumed

Hi,
I was a kid once, too, and before I got pretty good with algebra,
I used to struggle with multiplication tables until blood came out
of my ears.
You might have a teacher who is not good at 1-on-1 teaching, or
too busy to do it
You might have an algebra book that's not too good.
I can do problems now and then, but I couldn't go back to square 1
and bring you back up.
Are there any volunteers where you live? There might be. I volunteered
once myself to tutor after school. That's something you could Google.
A volunteer might direct you to a really good book, too.
It's worth it to keep trying, but don't bang your head against the wall.
Go back as far as you must go to clear up your confusion.
Good luck.
