Answer 356650 by josmiceli(9678) About Me  on 2011-12-15 16:19:53 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
given:
+s+=+t%2F2+%2B+30+
here's the plot:
+graph%28+400%2C+400%2C+-2%2C+20%2C+-10%2C+100%2C+%281%2F2%29%2Ax+%2B+30+%29+
s is plotted on the vertical axis
t is plotted on the horizontal axis
Go to +t+=+16+ since 1975 + 16 = 1991
+s+ looks like about 38

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Add their rates of filling
1st pipe's rate = ( 1 tank ) / ( 12 hrs )
2nd pipe's rate = ( 1tank ) / ( 8 hrs )
Let t = hrs to fill tank using both pipes
+1%2F12+%2B+1%2F8+=+1%2Ft+
Multiply both sides by +24t+
+2t+%2B+3t+=+24+

substitute (2) into (1)
(1) +24t+-+5+=+20t+

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
I will put all the data in terms of months
Let p = puppy's current age in months
Let j = Jesse's age in months
given:
(1) +p+=+%28+1%2F2+%29%2A%28+j%2F12+%29+
(2) +p+%2B+%285%2A12%29+=+2%2A%28j%2F12%29+%2B+5+
--------------------------
This is 2 equations and 2 unknowns,
so it's solvable
(1) +p+=+j%2F24+
(2) +12p+%2B+720+=+2j+%2B+60+
(2) +6p+%2B+360+=+j+%2B+30+
Substitute (1) into (2)
(2) 6%2A%28j%2F24%29+%2B+360+=+j+%2B+30+
(2) +j%2F4+%2B+360+=+j+%2B+30+
(2) +j+-+j%2F4+=+360+-+30+
(2) +%283%2F4%29%2Aj+=+330+
(2) +j+=+%284%2F3%29%2A330+
(2) +j+=+440+
and
(1) +p+=+j%2F24+
(1) +p+=+440%2F24+
(1) +p+=+18.333+
The puppy's age is 18 months and 10 days
---------------------------------
check:
Jesse's age in years is +440%2F12+=+36.666+
The puppy's age in months is 1/2 Jesse's age in years
---------------
In 5 years, the puppy's age in months will be
+18.333+%2B+60+=+78.333+
Twice Jesse's age in years in 5 years will be
+2%2A36.666+=+73.333+
OK

The y-intercept occurs where x = 0
Use the rule that says " Anything raised to
the zero power = 1"
---------------
Let +x+=+0+
+y+=+10%2A5%5Ex+
+y+=+10%2A5%5E0+

The y-intercept is at (0,10)

Travel_Word_Problems/547368: Joe drove 225 miles using 8 gallons of gas. At this rate, how many gallons of gas would he need to drive 405 miles?

How far can he go on 1 gallon of gas?
+225%2F8+=+28.125+ mi
+405%2F28.125+=+14.4+
He needs 14.4 gallons to drive 405 mi

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You can't solve it. This is an equation
with 2 variables, x and y.
The only way to solve it is if you assign
a value to either x or y. Then you can find
the other variable.
For example, if I say +x+=+11+, then
+y+=+4%2A11+-+2+
+y+=+44+-+2+
+y+=+42+
---------------
Another way is if you have 2 equations
+y+=+4x+-+2+ and
+y+=+-3x+%2B+7+
These intersect at 1 point, (x,y), and
the intersection is the solution
Here's the plot of these 2 lines:

add their rates of painting

Working together:
( 1 apt. ) / ( x hrs )

Multiply both sides by +35x+
