Expressions-with-variables/555758: callie is 4 years older than andrew. in 3 years the sum of their ages will be 52. how old is each now? i have have to solve each problem by creating a chart, writing an algebraic equation and then solving it
1 solutions

Answer 361935 by josmiceli(9654) About Me  on 2012-01-11 16:08:17 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A key to age problems is the fact that the difference in
two peoples ages remains the same throughout their lives.
This is obvious, but often overlooked
Let +x+ = Andrew's age now
+x+%2B+4+ = Callie's age now
+x+%2B+3+ = Andrew's age in 3 yrs
+x+%2B+7+ = Callie's age in 3 yrs
You can have columns headed x, +x+%2B+4+, +x+%2B+3+, +x+%2B+7+
and the last column is +x+%2B+3+%2B+x+%2B+7+=+2x+%2B+10+
Under the last column you have +52+ for the sum of their ages
Now find x with
+2x+%2B+10+=+52+
+2x+=+42+
+x+=+21+
Now work your way back to the 1st 2 columns

Numbers_Word_Problems/555757: A machine can make 6 parts in 8 minutes. How many can it make in 40 minutes?
How do you do this problem above?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
+6%2F8+=+3%2F4+ parts/min
This is +3%2F4+ of a part in +1+ minute
+%28+%28+3%2F4%29+%2F+1+%29%2A40+=+30+ parts
Note that ( parts/min )*( min ) = parts
They can make 30 parts in 40 minutes

Equations/555661: FACTOR THE TRINOMIAL COMPLETELY: x^2 + x-2 =

Answer 361887 by josmiceli(9654) About Me  on 2012-01-11 11:54:13 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You can complete the square:
+x%5E2+%2B+x+-+2+=+0+
+x%5E2+%2B+x+=+2+
Take 1/2 of the coefficient of x,
square it, and add it to both sides
+x%5E2+%2B+x+%2B+%28+1%2F2+%29%5E2+=+2+%2B+%28+1%2F2+%29%5E2+
+x%5E2+%2B+x+%2B+1%2F4+=+2+%2B+1%2F4+
+%28+x+%2B+1%2F2%29%5E2+=+9%2F4+
+x+%2B+1%2F2+=+3%2F2+
(1) +x+=+1+
and, also
+x+%2B+1%2F2+=+-3%2F2+
(2) +x+=+-2+
Rewrite (1) and (2) as
(1) +x+-+1+=+0+
(2) +x+%2B+2+=+0+
The factors are:
+%28+x+-+1+%29+%2A+%28+x+%2B+2+%29+=+x%5E2+%2B+x+-+2+

A password to a computer is to consist of 2 lower case letters followed by three digits. How many different passwords are possible if repetition of letters and numbers is not permitted?
1 solutions

Answer 361885 by josmiceli(9654) About Me  on 2012-01-11 11:45:09 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
It's better if you reason it out and
don't think of it as a formula.
-----------------------
Imagine you have 5 empty boxes that you can put
things in, but you are restricted as to what you can
put in them.
-----------------------
There are 26 possible things ( letters ) you can put in the 1st box
You have used up a letter, so you only have 25 possible letters
you can put in the 2nd box.
In the 3rd box, you are allowed 0 - 9, so there are 10 possible things
In the 4th box, you have 10 - 1 = 9 possible things allowed
In the 5th box, you have 10 - 2 = 8 possible things allowed
------------------------------------------------
The numbers of things allowed in the 5 boxes is:
26, 25, 10, 9, and 8
Now the key to the problem is what to do with these numbers.
The general rule is, whenever you have
( x number possible ) AND ( y number possible ) AND ( z number possible ) etc. etc. etc.
The resulting possibilities are x times y times z etc.
So, the number of possible passwords is:
+26%2A25%2A10%2A9%2A8+=+468000+

Answer 361883 by josmiceli(9654) About Me  on 2012-01-11 11:27:49 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let +a+ = numerator
Let +b+ = denominator
given:
(1) +a+=+b+-+10+
(2) +%28+a+%2B+5+%29+%2F+%28+b+-+5+%29+=+1+
-----------------------
(2) +a+%2B+5+=+b+-+5+
(2) +b+-+a+=+10+
Also, from (1)
(1) +b+-+a+=+10+
----------------
It looks like the fraction can be anything
where +b+-+a+=+10+
suppose +b+=+7471+, then +a+=+7461+
+%28+7461+%2B+5+%29+%2F+%28+7471+-+5+%29+=+7466+%2F+7466+
This equals 1, so the fraction can be any
+a+%2F+%28+a+%2B+10+%29+

If X represents an unknown digit which is either 4,5, or 6,
then I am given:
(1) 4 X 4
(2) 5 X X 5
(3) 2 X X X 2
--------
Thje problem is how to shift these 3 sequences around
so that the X's are masked out by the digits
Suppose I combine (2) and (3) this way:
5 2 X 5 X 2
Now I can combine this with (1) to mask out the X's

given:
(1) +a+%2B+b+%2B+c+=+180+
(2) +a+=+4b+

Since it's a right triangle, there is a right angle.
That means the sum of the 2 acute angles is
90 degrees. ( 90 + 90 = 180 )
Suppose you want to find the angle which is between
the hypotenuse and the side of length 4.

This is determined by what is called the " discriminant "
This is +b%5E2+-+4a%2Ac+ in the formula for the roots
which is x+=+%28-b+%2B-+sqrt%28+b%5E2-4%2Aa%2Ac+%29%29%2F%282%2Aa%29+
In this case:
+2x%5E2-7x%2B9=x%2B1+
