2. If I wash my clothes, then I will have something clean to wear.
3. If I have something clean to wear, then I washed my clothes.
4. If I have something clean to wear, then I did not wash my clothes.

Answer 331602 by jim_thompson5910(28510) on 2011-08-22 22:57:42 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!The inverse of p --> q is ~p --> ~q. Likewise, the inverse of ~p --> ~q is p --> q
In this case,
p: I wash my clothes
q: I will have something clean to wear
So
~p: I do not wash my clothes
~q: I will have nothing clean to wear
So the original statement of "If I do not wash my clothes, then I will have nothing clean to wear" translates to ~p --> ~q
Using the rule given above, the inverse of that is p --> q which translates back into "If I wash my clothes, then I will have something clean to wear"
So the answer is choice 2

Which pair has equally likely outcomes? List the letters of the two choices below which have equal probabilities of success, separated by a comma. A standard deck of cards has 12 face cards and four Aces (Aces are not face cards).
A. drawing a black two out of a standard 52 card deck given it’s not a face card or an Ace.
B. drawing a six out of a standard 52 card deck given it’s not a face card or an Ace.
C. rolling a sum of 7 on two fair six sided dice
D. rolling a sum of 3 on two fair six sided dice
E. rolling a sum of 10 on two fair six sided dice

Answer 331477 by jim_thompson5910(28510) on 2011-08-22 16:06:45 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!A. drawing a black two out of a standard 52 card deck given it’s not a face card or an Ace.
Since it's "given it's not a face card or an Ace.", we know that the drawn card is a 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, or 10 (and it's either red of black)
There are 9 cards listed from 2 to 10 (shown above) and there are 4 suits. So there are 9*4 = 36 cards that are NOT face cards and that are NOT aces.
So in this part, there are essentially 36 cards to worry about. Note: you can think of it as we're throwing out the face cards and the aces from the deck.
The cards we desire are the two of clubs and the two of spades (both of which are black cards). So there are two cards with the face value of 2 that are black.
So the probability of drawing a black 2 (given the card is NOT a face card and NOT an ace) is
Note: probability of event = (# of desired outcomes)/(# of total possible out comes)
======================================================================
B. drawing a six out of a standard 52 card deck given it’s not a face card or an Ace.
Again, we're dealing with 36 cards (we threw out the face cards and aces; see part a)
There are now four cards we desire: a six of hearts, a six of diamonds, a six of spades, and a six of clubs (ie the card with a face value of 6 drawn from each suit)
So the probability is now
=========================================================================
C. rolling a sum of 7 on two fair six sided dice
There are 6 ways to roll a 7, and they are: (1,6), (2,5), (3,4), (4,3), (5,2), (6,1)
Note: something like (2,5) means that the first die reads "2" and the second die reads "5" (and they add to 2+5=7)
Overall, there are 36 ways to roll 2 dice (since 6*6 = 36). To see this better, make a table where the columns represent die #1 and the rows represent die #2. You'll then see 6*6 = 36 individual boxes (to represent the individual sums of all the possible combos)
So the probability is
=========================================================================
D. rolling a sum of 3 on two fair six sided dice
There are only 2 ways to roll a 3 and they are: (1,2) and (2,1)
Basically, one die reads "2" and the other reads "1"
From part C, we know that there are 36 different ways two dice can fall.
So the probability is
=========================================================================
E. rolling a sum of 10 on two fair six sided dice
There are 3 ways to roll a ten and they are: (4,6), (5,5), (6,4)
There are 36 different possible combinations when two dice are rolled.
So the probability is
=========================================================================
Summary:
We get the following probabilities for each part
A)
B)
C)
D)
E)
So parts A and D have equal probabilities (both equal to )
So the answer is A,D

Looking at the expression , we can see that the first coefficient is , the second coefficient is , and the last term is .
Now multiply the first coefficient by the last term to get .
Now the question is: what two whole numbers multiply to (the previous product) and add to the second coefficient ?
To find these two numbers, we need to list all of the factors of (the previous product).
Factors of  :
1,2,3,4,6,7,8,9,12,14,18,21,24,28,36,42,49,56,63,72,84,98,126,147,168,196,252,294,392,441,504,588,882,1176,1764,3528

From the table, we can see that the two numbers and add to (the middle coefficient).
So the two numbers and both multiply to and add to
Now replace the middle term with . Remember, and add to . So this shows us that .
 Replace the second term with .
 Group the terms into two pairs.
 Factor out the GCF from the first group.
 Factor out from the second group. The goal of this step is to make the terms in the second parenthesis equal to the terms in the first parenthesis.
 Combine like terms. Or factor out the common term

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1,5,7,35
-1,-5,-7,-35
Note: list the negative of each factor. This will allow us to find all possible combinations.
These factors pair up and multiply to .
1*(-35) = -35
5*(-7) = -35
(-1)*(35) = -35
(-5)*(7) = -35
Now let's add up each pair of factors to see if one pair adds to the middle coefficient :
| First Number | Second Number | Sum | | 1 | -35 | 1+(-35)=-34 | | 5 | -7 | 5+(-7)=-2 | | -1 | 35 | -1+35=34 | | -5 | 7 | -5+7=2 |
From the table, we can see that the two numbers and add to (the middle coefficient).
So the two numbers and both multiply to and add to
Now replace the middle term with . Remember, and add to . So this shows us that .

Linear-systems/483505: I have been working a problem over and over for my online algebra class and I have also used the "help me with this problem" link and the "veiw an example" link and for some reason when I work the problem I am not getting the right answer.
The problem says" Write an equation that is paralell to the given equation and point".(MyMathLab, wk6, problem 32).
given equation: 4x=3y+5 given point (-3,4).
I know that I need to get my given equation to y=mx+b so that I can find what my slope is and use that same slope in my new equation.
4x=3y+5
-4x -3y
-3y=-4x+5
/-3 /-3 this is divide by -3 from both sides
y=4/3x-5/3
So my slope is 4/3 now I can substitute in my points for x and y to find b.
4=4/3(-3)+b
4=-12/3+b
4=-4+b
-4 -4
0=b
So my new problem would be y=4/3x+0. But when I input that answer into my solution it says that I am wrong. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. Please help I have four problems like this and cannot figure out what I am doing wrong. 1 solutions

Equations/483504: Find the equation of the line satisfying the given conditions, giving it in slope-intercept form if possible.
1) Through (1,-4), perpendicular for x=4 1 solutions
Answer 330877 by jim_thompson5910(28510) on 2011-08-19 22:05:26 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Anything perpendicular to x=4 will be of the y=k where k is some number
Since the line MUST go through (1,-4), we know that k=-4 (since the y-coordinate is -4)
So the equation of the perpendicular line is y = -4
