Equations/521778: factor trinomial using trial and error
6x^2+39x+60
or is it not factorable?

1 solutions

Answer 346575 by jim_thompson5910(28595) About Me  on 2011-10-26 18:33:58 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!

6x%5E2%2B39x%2B60 Start with the given expression.

3%282x%5E2%2B13x%2B20%29 Factor out the GCF 3.

Now let's try to factor the inner expression 2x%5E2%2B13x%2B20

---------------------------------------------------------------

Looking at the expression 2x%5E2%2B13x%2B20, we can see that the first coefficient is 2, the second coefficient is 13, and the last term is 20.

Now multiply the first coefficient 2 by the last term 20 to get %282%29%2820%29=40.

Now the question is: what two whole numbers multiply to 40 (the previous product) and add to the second coefficient 13?

To find these two numbers, we need to list all of the factors of 40 (the previous product).

Factors of 40:
1,2,4,5,8,10,20,40
-1,-2,-4,-5,-8,-10,-20,-40

Note: list the negative of each factor. This will allow us to find all possible combinations.

These factors pair up and multiply to 40.
1*40 = 40
2*20 = 40
4*10 = 40
5*8 = 40
(-1)*(-40) = 40
(-2)*(-20) = 40
(-4)*(-10) = 40
(-5)*(-8) = 40

Now let's add up each pair of factors to see if one pair adds to the middle coefficient 13:

First NumberSecond NumberSum
1401+40=41
2202+20=22
4104+10=14
585+8=13
-1-40-1+(-40)=-41
-2-20-2+(-20)=-22
-4-10-4+(-10)=-14
-5-8-5+(-8)=-13

From the table, we can see that the two numbers 5 and 8 add to 13 (the middle coefficient).

So the two numbers 5 and 8 both multiply to 40 and add to 13

Now replace the middle term 13x with 5x%2B8x. Remember, 5 and 8 add to 13. So this shows us that 5x%2B8x=13x.

2x%5E2%2Bhighlight%285x%2B8x%29%2B20 Replace the second term 13x with 5x%2B8x.

%282x%5E2%2B5x%29%2B%288x%2B20%29 Group the terms into two pairs.

x%282x%2B5%29%2B%288x%2B20%29 Factor out the GCF x from the first group.

x%282x%2B5%29%2B4%282x%2B5%29 Factor out 4 from the second group. The goal of this step is to make the terms in the second parenthesis equal to the terms in the first parenthesis.

%28x%2B4%29%282x%2B5%29 Combine like terms. Or factor out the common term 2x%2B5

--------------------------------------------------

So 3%282x%5E2%2B13x%2B20%29 then factors further to 3%28x%2B4%29%282x%2B5%29

===============================================================

Answer:

So 6x%5E2%2B39x%2B60 completely factors to 3%28x%2B4%29%282x%2B5%29.

In other words, 6x%5E2%2B39x%2B60=3%28x%2B4%29%282x%2B5%29.

Note: you can check the answer by expanding 3%28x%2B4%29%282x%2B5%29 to get 6x%5E2%2B39x%2B60 or by graphing the original expression and the answer (the two graphs should be identical).

Equations/521169: is the ordered pair (7,8) a solution to the equation x-y=5?
1 solutions

Answer 346369 by jim_thompson5910(28595) About Me  on 2011-10-25 19:47:15 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x-y=5

7-8=5 ... note: replace x with 7 and y with 8 (since (7,8) means x=7 and y=8)

-1 = 5

Since the last equation is false, the ordered pair is not a solution.

9x%5E4-81y%5E2

9%28x%5E4-9y%5E2%29

9%28%28x%5E2%29%5E2-%283y%29%5E2%29

9%28x%5E2-3y%29%28x%5E2%2B3y%29 Use the difference of squares factoring formula here.

So 9x%5E4-81y%5E2 factors to 9%28x%5E2-3y%29%28x%5E2%2B3y%29

In other words, 9x%5E4-81y%5E2=9%28x%5E2-3y%29%28x%5E2%2B3y%29

%28x%2B1%29%28x%5E3%2B7x%5E2%2B5x%2B4%29 Start with the given expression.

x%28x%5E3%2B7x%5E2%2B5x%2B4%29%2B1%28x%5E3%2B7x%5E2%2B5x%2B4%29 Expand.

Distribute.

x%5E4%2B7%2Ax%5E3%2B5%2Ax%5E2%2B4%2Ax%2Bx%5E3%2B7%2Ax%5E2%2B5%2Ax%2B4 Multiply.

x%5E4%2B8%2Ax%5E3%2B12%2Ax%5E2%2B9%2Ax%2B4 Now combine like terms.

So %28x%2B1%29%28x%5E3%2B7x%5E2%2B5x%2B4%29 expands to x%5E4%2B8%2Ax%5E3%2B12%2Ax%5E2%2B9%2Ax%2B4.

Linear-equations/521136: Please help me in this question i got it for h.w and i need it for tomorrow please help! Thanks so much i really appreciate it!
Question: Why is it impossible for any point to lie on both y=3x+5 and on y=3x-2?
Please help and show how you got to it. Thanks! :)
1 solutions

Answer 346351 by jim_thompson5910(28595) About Me  on 2011-10-25 19:16:59 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If y=3x+5 and y=3x-2, then 3x+5 = 3x-2 ( I started with y=3x-2, then replaced 'y' with '3x+5' on the left side)

Solve this equation to get

3x+5=3x-2

3x=3x-2-5

3x-3x=-2-5

0x=-2-5

0x=-7

0=-7

Since this equation is NEVER true for any x value, this means that there are no solutions.

So because there are no solutions for x, there are no solutions for y as well. Therefore, there are no points that lie on both lines at the same time.

So the two lines never intersect.

real-numbers/521101: My question is " the set of whole numbers is closed under subtraction. if false, give a counterexample." First what are whole number? And what does it mean by closed under subtraction
1 solutions

Answer 346340 by jim_thompson5910(28595) About Me  on 2011-10-25 18:57:59 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The set of whole numbers is the set {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, ...}

This is the set of positive integers (ie numbers that have no decimal/fractional part) with zero included.

---------------------------

For a set to be closed under subtraction, EVERY possible subtraction of ANY two elements must lie in the set. So if you subtract ANY two elements in a certain set, and that result is also in the same set, then that set is closed under subtraction

For example, the set of integers is closed under subtraction since subtracting ANY two integers gives you an integer.

---------------------------

Using this info, we'll find that the statement "the set of whole numbers is closed under subtraction" is false since 0 - 2 = -2 (this is the counterexample)

Notice we're subtracting 2 from 0 (both of which are whole numbers) to get -2 (which is NOT a whole number)

If this figure is a rectangular solid (like a building block), then the volume is simply

Volume = Length x Width x Height

V = L x H x W

V = 5 x 9 x 10

V = 45 x 10

V = 450

So the volume is 450 cubic ft
