Functions/527336: find the domain of the given function
f(y)= 1/(y+1)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You cannot divide by zero

So y+1 cannot be zero

If it were, then y + 1 = 0, which would mean that y = -1

So if y = -1, then y + 1 = 0, which would cause a division by zero error.

To avoid this, we exclude this value from the domain.

So the domain is the set of all real numbers, but y cannot equal -1.

The domain of ANY polynomial is the set of all real numbers.

So the domain is the set of all real numbers (since f(x) is a polynomial function).

Equations/527243: Find an equation of the line that satisfies the given conditions.

(−1, −2) and (6, 5)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

First let's find the slope of the line through the points and

Note: is the first point . So this means that x%5B1%5D=-1 and y%5B1%5D=-2.
Also, is the second point . So this means that x%5B2%5D=6 and y%5B2%5D=5.

m=%28y%5B2%5D-y%5B1%5D%29%2F%28x%5B2%5D-x%5B1%5D%29 Start with the slope formula.

m=%285--2%29%2F%286--1%29 Plug in y%5B2%5D=5, y%5B1%5D=-2, x%5B2%5D=6, and x%5B1%5D=-1

m=%287%29%2F%286--1%29 Subtract -2 from 5 to get 7

m=%287%29%2F%287%29 Subtract -1 from 6 to get 7

m=1 Reduce

So the slope of the line that goes through the points and is m=1

Now let's use the point slope formula:

y-y%5B1%5D=m%28x-x%5B1%5D%29 Start with the point slope formula

y--2=1%28x--1%29 Plug in m=1, x%5B1%5D=-1, and y%5B1%5D=-2

y--2=1%28x%2B1%29 Rewrite x--1 as x%2B1

y%2B2=1%28x%2B1%29 Rewrite y--2 as y%2B2

y%2B2=1x%2B1%281%29 Distribute

y%2B2=1x%2B1 Multiply

y=1x%2B1-2 Subtract 2 from both sides.

y=1x-1 Combine like terms.

y=x-1 Simplify

So the equation that goes through the points and is y=x-1

Notice how the graph of y=x-1 goes through the points and . So this visually verifies our answer.
Graph of y=x-1 through the points and

Rational-functions/527124: Hey, I've been looking all over the internet for a way to convert (y=(m)x+b) into point-slope form. I can't remember though whether this only applies to quadratic equations. If you consider this two questions, my apologies, I'm new to this.
Thanks.

Point slope form is

y - y1 = m(x - x1)

where (x1, y1) is a point that lies on the graph and m is the slope

From y = mx+b, the slope will be given. It'll be up to you find a point that lies on the graph. The easiest point is the y-intercept, which is (0, b). So x1 = 0 and y1 = b

This means that

y = mx+b

converts to

y - b = m(x - 0)

where y1 = b

Complex_Numbers/527181: factor the trinomial by grouping : 15x^3+47x^2+28x
1 solutions

Answer 348815 by jim_thompson5910(28595) About Me  on 2011-11-06 19:48:18 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!

15x%5E3%2B47x%5E2%2B28x Start with the given expression.

x%2815x%5E2%2B47x%2B28%29 Factor out the GCF x.

Now let's try to factor the inner expression 15x%5E2%2B47x%2B28

---------------------------------------------------------------

Looking at the expression 15x%5E2%2B47x%2B28, we can see that the first coefficient is 15, the second coefficient is 47, and the last term is 28.

Now multiply the first coefficient 15 by the last term 28 to get %2815%29%2828%29=420.

Now the question is: what two whole numbers multiply to 420 (the previous product) and add to the second coefficient 47?

To find these two numbers, we need to list all of the factors of 420 (the previous product).

Factors of 420:
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,10,12,14,15,20,21,28,30,35,42,60,70,84,105,140,210,420
-1,-2,-3,-4,-5,-6,-7,-10,-12,-14,-15,-20,-21,-28,-30,-35,-42,-60,-70,-84,-105,-140,-210,-420

Note: list the negative of each factor. This will allow us to find all possible combinations.

These factors pair up and multiply to 420.
1*420 = 420
2*210 = 420
3*140 = 420
4*105 = 420
5*84 = 420
6*70 = 420
7*60 = 420
10*42 = 420
12*35 = 420
14*30 = 420
15*28 = 420
20*21 = 420
(-1)*(-420) = 420
(-2)*(-210) = 420
(-3)*(-140) = 420
(-4)*(-105) = 420
(-5)*(-84) = 420
(-6)*(-70) = 420
(-7)*(-60) = 420
(-10)*(-42) = 420
(-12)*(-35) = 420
(-14)*(-30) = 420
(-15)*(-28) = 420
(-20)*(-21) = 420

Now let's add up each pair of factors to see if one pair adds to the middle coefficient 47:

First NumberSecond NumberSum
14201+420=421
22102+210=212
31403+140=143
41054+105=109
5845+84=89
6706+70=76
7607+60=67
104210+42=52
123512+35=47
143014+30=44
152815+28=43
202120+21=41
-1-420-1+(-420)=-421
-2-210-2+(-210)=-212
-3-140-3+(-140)=-143
-4-105-4+(-105)=-109
-5-84-5+(-84)=-89
-6-70-6+(-70)=-76
-7-60-7+(-60)=-67
-10-42-10+(-42)=-52
-12-35-12+(-35)=-47
-14-30-14+(-30)=-44
-15-28-15+(-28)=-43
-20-21-20+(-21)=-41

From the table, we can see that the two numbers 12 and 35 add to 47 (the middle coefficient).

So the two numbers 12 and 35 both multiply to 420 and add to 47

Now replace the middle term 47x with 12x%2B35x. Remember, 12 and 35 add to 47. So this shows us that 12x%2B35x=47x.

15x%5E2%2Bhighlight%2812x%2B35x%29%2B28 Replace the second term 47x with 12x%2B35x.

%2815x%5E2%2B12x%29%2B%2835x%2B28%29 Group the terms into two pairs.

3x%285x%2B4%29%2B%2835x%2B28%29 Factor out the GCF 3x from the first group.

3x%285x%2B4%29%2B7%285x%2B4%29 Factor out 7 from the second group. The goal of this step is to make the terms in the second parenthesis equal to the terms in the first parenthesis.

%283x%2B7%29%285x%2B4%29 Combine like terms. Or factor out the common term 5x%2B4

--------------------------------------------------

So x%2815x%5E2%2B47x%2B28%29 then factors further to x%283x%2B7%29%285x%2B4%29

===============================================================

Answer:

So 15x%5E3%2B47x%5E2%2B28x completely factors to x%283x%2B7%29%285x%2B4%29.

In other words, 15x%5E3%2B47x%5E2%2B28x=x%283x%2B7%29%285x%2B4%29.

Note: you can check the answer by expanding x%283x%2B7%29%285x%2B4%29 to get 15x%5E3%2B47x%5E2%2B28x or by graphing the original expression and the answer (the two graphs should be identical).

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

4x-7y=11 Start with the given equation.

-7y=11-4x Subtract 4x from both sides.

-7y=-4x%2B11 Rearrange the terms.

y=%28-4x%2B11%29%2F%28-7%29 Divide both sides by -7 to isolate y.

y=%28%28-4%29%2F%28-7%29%29x%2B%2811%29%2F%28-7%29 Break up the fraction.

y=%284%2F7%29x-11%2F7 Reduce.

Let x = vertex angle

Since all angles in a triangle add to 180 degrees, we know that

70+70+x = 180

140+x = 180

x = 180-140

x = 40

So the vertex angle is 40 degrees.

Answer 348768 by jim_thompson5910(28595) About Me  on 2011-11-06 17:37:00 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!

2x%5E2%2B18x%2B28=0 Start with the given equation.

Notice that the quadratic 2x%5E2%2B18x%2B28 is in the form of Ax%5E2%2BBx%2BC where A=2, B=18, and C=28

Let's use the quadratic formula to solve for "x":

x+=+%28-B+%2B-+sqrt%28+B%5E2-4AC+%29%29%2F%282A%29 Start with the quadratic formula

x+=+%28-%2818%29+%2B-+sqrt%28+%2818%29%5E2-4%282%29%2828%29+%29%29%2F%282%282%29%29 Plug in A=2, B=18, and C=28

x+=+%28-18+%2B-+sqrt%28+324-4%282%29%2828%29+%29%29%2F%282%282%29%29 Square 18 to get 324.

x+=+%28-18+%2B-+sqrt%28+324-224+%29%29%2F%282%282%29%29 Multiply 4%282%29%2828%29 to get 224

x+=+%28-18+%2B-+sqrt%28+100+%29%29%2F%282%282%29%29 Subtract 224 from 324 to get 100

x+=+%28-18+%2B-+sqrt%28+100+%29%29%2F%284%29 Multiply 2 and 2 to get 4.

x+=+%28-18+%2B-+10%29%2F%284%29 Take the square root of 100 to get 10.

x+=+%28-18+%2B+10%29%2F%284%29 or x+=+%28-18+-+10%29%2F%284%29 Break up the expression.

x+=+%28-8%29%2F%284%29 or x+=++%28-28%29%2F%284%29 Combine like terms.

x+=+-2 or x+=+-7 Simplify.

So the solutions are x+=+-2 or x+=+-7

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

First let's find the slope of the line through the points and

Note: is the first point . So this means that x%5B1%5D=-2 and y%5B1%5D=-1.
Also, is the second point . So this means that x%5B2%5D=-4 and y%5B2%5D=-3.

m=%28y%5B2%5D-y%5B1%5D%29%2F%28x%5B2%5D-x%5B1%5D%29 Start with the slope formula.

m=%28-3--1%29%2F%28-4--2%29 Plug in y%5B2%5D=-3, y%5B1%5D=-1, x%5B2%5D=-4, and x%5B1%5D=-2

m=%28-2%29%2F%28-4--2%29 Subtract -1 from -3 to get -2

m=%28-2%29%2F%28-2%29 Subtract -2 from -4 to get -2

m=1 Reduce

So the slope of the line that goes through the points and is m=1

Now let's use the point slope formula:

y-y%5B1%5D=m%28x-x%5B1%5D%29 Start with the point slope formula

y--1=1%28x--2%29 Plug in m=1, x%5B1%5D=-2, and y%5B1%5D=-1

y--1=1%28x%2B2%29 Rewrite x--2 as x%2B2

y%2B1=1%28x%2B2%29 Rewrite y--1 as y%2B1

y%2B1=1x%2B1%282%29 Distribute

y%2B1=1x%2B2 Multiply

y=1x%2B2-1 Subtract 1 from both sides.

y=1x%2B1 Combine like terms.

y=x%2B1 Simplify

So the equation that goes through the points and is y=x%2B1

Since -10-5i is in standard form a%2Bbi, we can see that a=-10 and b=-5

abs%28a%2Bbi%29=sqrt%28a%5E2%2Bb%5E2%29 Start with the absolute value of a complex number formula.

abs%28-10-5i%29=sqrt%28%28-10%29%5E2%2B%28-5%29%5E2%29 Plug in a=-10 and b=-5.

abs%28-10-5i%29=sqrt%28100%2B%28-5%29%5E2%29 Square -10 to get 100.

abs%28-10-5i%29=sqrt%28100%2B25%29 Square -5 to get 25.

abs%28-10-5i%29=sqrt%28125%29 Add.
