Linear-systems/552815: how do system of equations using substitution x+y=4 2x+3y=9
1 solutions

Answer 360518 by jim_thompson5910(28536) About Me  on 2012-01-04 20:22:05 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Start with the given system of equations:

system%28x%2By=4%2C2x%2B3y=9%29

Now in order to solve this system by using substitution, we need to solve (or isolate) one variable. I'm going to solve for y.

So let's isolate y in the first equation

x%2By=4 Start with the first equation

y=4-x Subtract x from both sides

y=-x%2B4 Rearrange the equation

---------------------

Since y=-x%2B4, we can now replace each y in the second equation with -x%2B4 to solve for x

2x%2B3highlight%28%28-x%2B4%29%29=9 Plug in y=-x%2B4 into the second equation. In other words, replace each y with -x%2B4. Notice we've eliminated the y variables. So we now have a simple equation with one unknown.

2x%2B%283%29%28-1%29x%2B%283%29%284%29=9 Distribute 3 to -x%2B4

2x-3x%2B12=9 Multiply

-x%2B12=9 Combine like terms on the left side

-x=9-12Subtract 12 from both sides

-x=-3 Combine like terms on the right side

x=%28-3%29%2F%28-1%29 Divide both sides by -1 to isolate x

x=3 Divide

-----------------First Answer------------------------------

So the first part of our answer is: x=3

Since we know that x=3 we can plug it into the equation y=-x%2B4 (remember we previously solved for y in the first equation).

y=-x%2B4 Start with the equation where y was previously isolated.

y=-%283%29%2B4 Plug in x=3

y=-3%2B4 Multiply

y=1 Combine like terms

-----------------Second Answer------------------------------

So the second part of our answer is: y=1

-----------------Summary------------------------------

So our answers are:

x=3 and y=1

which form the point

Now let's graph the two equations (if you need help with graphing, check out this solver)

From the graph, we can see that the two equations intersect at . This visually verifies our answer.

graph of x%2By=4 (red) and 2x%2B3y=9 (green) and the intersection of the lines (blue circle).

Linear-equations/552785: How do you write the equation of a line in slope-intercept form passing through (4,5) and (6,8)?
1 solutions

Answer 360513 by jim_thompson5910(28536) About Me  on 2012-01-04 20:00:47 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!

First let's find the slope of the line through the points and

Note: is the first point . So this means that x%5B1%5D=4 and y%5B1%5D=5.
Also, is the second point . So this means that x%5B2%5D=6 and y%5B2%5D=8.

m=%28y%5B2%5D-y%5B1%5D%29%2F%28x%5B2%5D-x%5B1%5D%29 Start with the slope formula.

m=%288-5%29%2F%286-4%29 Plug in y%5B2%5D=8, y%5B1%5D=5, x%5B2%5D=6, and x%5B1%5D=4

m=%283%29%2F%286-4%29 Subtract 5 from 8 to get 3

m=%283%29%2F%282%29 Subtract 4 from 6 to get 2

So the slope of the line that goes through the points and is m=3%2F2

Now let's use the point slope formula:

y-y%5B1%5D=m%28x-x%5B1%5D%29 Start with the point slope formula

y-5=%283%2F2%29%28x-4%29 Plug in m=3%2F2, x%5B1%5D=4, and y%5B1%5D=5

y-5=%283%2F2%29x%2B%283%2F2%29%28-4%29 Distribute

y-5=%283%2F2%29x-6 Multiply

y=%283%2F2%29x-6%2B5 Add 5 to both sides.

y=%283%2F2%29x-1 Combine like terms.

y=%283%2F2%29x-1 Simplify

So the equation that goes through the points and is y=%283%2F2%29x-1

Notice how the graph of y=%283%2F2%29x-1 goes through the points and . So this visually verifies our answer.
Graph of y=%283%2F2%29x-1 through the points and

I'll do the first one to get you started.

# 1

x=5 or x=9 Start with the given solutions.

x-5=0 or x-9=0 Get everything to one side so that only 0 remains on the right side (for both equations).

%28x-5%29%28x-9%29=0 Use the zero product property to combine the equations.

x%5E2-14x%2B45=0 FOIL out the left side.

So the answer is x%5E2-14x%2B45=0

To check your work, simply solve x%5E2-14x%2B45=0 for x. Doing so will show you that the solutions are x=5 or x=9, which confirm the answer.

8f%2B11=-7f-19 Start with the given equation.

8f=-7f-19-11 Subtract 11 from both sides.

8f%2B7f=-19-11 Add 7f to both sides.

15f=-19-11 Combine like terms on the left side.

15f=-30 Combine like terms on the right side.

f=%28-30%29%2F%2815%29 Divide both sides by 15 to isolate f.

f=-2 Reduce.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Answer:

So the solution is f=-2

Answer 360488 by jim_thompson5910(28536) About Me  on 2012-01-04 18:58:30 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!

First let's find the slope of the line through the points and

Note: is the first point . So this means that x%5B1%5D=-7 and y%5B1%5D=-6.
Also, is the second point . So this means that x%5B2%5D=-1 and y%5B2%5D=-5.

m=%28y%5B2%5D-y%5B1%5D%29%2F%28x%5B2%5D-x%5B1%5D%29 Start with the slope formula.

m=%28-5--6%29%2F%28-1--7%29 Plug in y%5B2%5D=-5, y%5B1%5D=-6, x%5B2%5D=-1, and x%5B1%5D=-7

m=%281%29%2F%28-1--7%29 Subtract -6 from -5 to get 1

m=%281%29%2F%286%29 Subtract -7 from -1 to get 6

So the slope of the line that goes through the points and is m=1%2F6

Now let's use the point slope formula:

y-y%5B1%5D=m%28x-x%5B1%5D%29 Start with the point slope formula

y--6=%281%2F6%29%28x--7%29 Plug in m=1%2F6, x%5B1%5D=-7, and y%5B1%5D=-6

y--6=%281%2F6%29%28x%2B7%29 Rewrite x--7 as x%2B7

y%2B6=%281%2F6%29%28x%2B7%29 Rewrite y--6 as y%2B6

y%2B6=%281%2F6%29x%2B%281%2F6%29%287%29 Distribute

y%2B6=%281%2F6%29x%2B7%2F6 Multiply

y=%281%2F6%29x%2B7%2F6-6 Subtract 6 from both sides.

y=%281%2F6%29x-29%2F6 Combine like terms. note: If you need help with fractions, check out this solver.

So the equation that goes through the points and is y=%281%2F6%29x-29%2F6

If you have m%3C7, then you draw an open circle at 7 and you shade to the left on the number line. The open circle tells you to exclude the endpoint 7.

Triangles/552683: The legs of an isosceles right triangle are 5 inches long. what is the length of the hypotenuse of the triangle to the nearest inch?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If the leg of an isosceles right triangle is x inches, then the hypotenuse is x%2Asqrt%282%29 inches long.

So in this case, the hypotenuse is 5%2Asqrt%282%29, which is approximately 7.0710678 and that rounds to 7 inches.
