Functions/568532: Which of the following is NOT included in the domain of f(x)=6x+2 divided by x square-9? a.3 b.-3,3 c.9 d.-3
1 solutions

Answer 367007 by jim_thompson5910(28595) About Me  on 2012-02-06 15:27:22 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Since you CANNOT divide by zero, this means that x^2-9 cannot be zero. Notice how x=-3 and x=3 make x^2-9 zero. So they are NOT in the domain.

So the answer is choice B

Expressions-with-variables/568531: You have 8 bags of grass seed. Each bag covers 1200 ft squared of ground. The function A(b)= 1200b represents the are A(b), in square feet, that b bags cover. What domain and range are reasonable for the function? Explain.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Domain: Set of all nonnegative integers (ie integers that are not negative)

Range: The set {0, 1200, 2400, 3600, 4800, ...}

The reason why negative numbers are excluded is because negative bag counts or negative area doesn't make much sense. Integers are stressed here because you cannot buy half a bag (you must buy whole bags)

The range is simply the set of all multiples of 1200

Probability-and-statistics/568529: If light bulbs have lives that are normally distributed with a mean of 2500 hours and a standard deviation of 500 hours, what percentage of light bulbs have a life less than 2500 hours?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Since the distribution is symmetric about the mean of 2500, this means that 50% of the bulbs will have a life less than 2500 hours.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
P(A|B) = P(A intersect B)/P(B)

P(A|B) = P(A and B)/P(B)

P(A|B) = 0.1/0.6

P(A|B) = 0.1667

which rounds to P(A|B) = 0.17

So the answer is choice B

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x = # of hours and y = total pay

Notice how as x increases by 2, y increases by 16. So the change is 16/2 = 8, which means that the slope is 8. So m=8

Now when x = 4, y = 32. So use this info to find b in y=mx%2Bb

y=mx%2Bb

32=%288%29%284%29%2Bb

32=32%2Bb

32-32=b

0=b

b=0

So the equation is y=8x%2B0 or simply y=8x

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A = (bh)/2

54 = (12h)/2

54*2 = 12h

108 = 12h

108/12 = h

9 = h

h = 9

So the height is 9

(7/9)*(7/9)-1/7

49/81-1/7

(49/81)*(7/7)-(1/7)*(81/81)

343/567 - 81/567

(343 - 81)/567

262/567

So (7/9)*(7/9)-1/7 = 262/567

The only problem is that we have no idea what the function f(x) is, so we cannot go any further. Make sure that there are no typos.

Travel_Word_Problems/568435: Jessie and Harper left their school at the same time and began travelling down the same road in the same direction. Jessie was travelling at a speed of 65mph while Harper drove at 70 mph. How many hours was it before Harper was 5 miles ahead of Jessie?
This is what I tried (I have no clue how to even start):
65x = 70(x+5/70)
65x = 70 (x + 1/14)
65x = 70x + 5
-70x -70x
-5x = 5
/-5 /-5
x = -1 hours
I do have access to the answer booklet but it says that the answer is 1, not -1, but it doesn't show how to do it and our teacher expects us to show our work.
Thank you so so much!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You can use intuition and think that if Jessie is traveling 65 mph, then in one hour, s/he will have gone 65 miles. In that same time, Harper drove at 70 mph, which means that s/he will have gone 70 miles. The difference of these distances is 70 - 65 = 5 miles.

Or you can set up the equation 70x-65x=5. To get this equation, we basically use the idea that

(Harpers Distance) - (Jessies Distance) = 5 miles

and that

Distance = (Rate) * (Time)

Now solve for x to get

70x-65x=5

5x=5

x=5%2F5

x=1

and get the same answer.
