You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The basic idea is to replace one variable with another expression (of that other variable) so you can eliminate one variable.

This way, you'll have a single equation with one variable. You then solve that equation to find the value of that variable. Then you use the solution to find the value of the previously eliminated variable.
=======================================================
# 1
y=3x-4
y= -5x + 4

y=3x-4
-5x+4=3x-4 ... Note: I'm replacing the 'y' with -5x+4 (since y = -5x+4)
-5x-3x=-4-4
-8x=-8
x=-8/(-8)
x = 1
-------------
y = 3x-4
y = 3(1)-4 ... Here I'm replacing 'x' with 1 (since x = 1)
y = 3-4
y = -1

So x = 1 and y = -1

=======================================================
# 2
y=2x+13
y=-4x-23

y=2x+13
-4x-23=2x+13
-4x-2x=13+23
-6x=36
x=36/(-6)
x = -6
--------------
y = 2x+13
y = 2(-6)+13
y = -12+13
y = 1
So x = -6 and y = 1
=======================================================
# 3
y=3x+20
y=x+4

y=3x+20
x+4=3x+20
x-3x=20-4
-2x=16
x=16/(-2)
x = -8
----------------
y = 3x+20
y = 3(-8)+20
y = -24+20
y = -4

So x = -8 and y = -4

=======================================================
# 4
y=-4x-8
y=3x+13

y=-4x-8
3x+13=-4x-8
3x+4x=-8-13
7x=-21
x=-21/7
x=-3
-----------------
y = -4x-8
y = -4(-3)-8
y = 12-8
y = 4

So x = -3 and y = 4

=======================================================
# 5
-x+y=6
y=-7+14

There's a typo in the second equation. Please repost this one. Thanks
=======================================================
# 6
y=-5x+12
x+y=-3

x+y=-3
x+(-5x+12)=-3
x-5x+12=-3
x-5x=-3-12
-4x=-15
x=-15/(-4)
x=15/4
----------------
y = -5x+12
y = -5(15/4)+12
y = -75/4+12
y = -75/4+48/4
y = -27/4

So x = 15/4 and y = -27/4
=======================================================
# 7
x+y=-6
y=-3x-10

x+y=-6
x+(-3x-10)=-6
x-3x-10=-6
x-3x=-6+10
-2x=4
x=4/(-2)
x = -2
------------------
y = -3x-10
y = -3(-2)-10
y = 6-10
y = -4

So x = -2 and y = -4
=======================================================
# 8
-4x+5y=-15
4x+y=21

First we need to solve one equation for one variable. I'm going to solve the second equation for y.

4x+y=21
y=21-4x
y = -4x+21
-----------
Now use substitution to solve

-4x+5y=-15
-4x+5(-4x+21)=-15
-4x-20x+105=-15
-4x-20x=-15-105
-24x=-120
x=-120/(-24)
x = 5
-----------
y = -4x+21
y = -4(5)+21
y = -20+21
y = 1

So x = 5 and y = 1

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
4x%2Bx-2x%2B3=54 Start with the given equation.

3x%2B3=54 Combine like terms on the left side.

3x=54-3 Subtract 3 from both sides.

3x=51 Combine like terms on the right side.

x=%2851%29%2F%283%29 Divide both sides by 3 to isolate x.

x=17 Reduce.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You are correct. You cannot factor 4x%5E2%2B5. So you simply solve for x.

4x%5E2%2B5=0

4x%5E2=-5

x%5E2=-5%2F4

x=%27%27%2B-sqrt%28-5%2F4%29

Now if you haven't learned about complex/imaginary numbers yet, then you would ignore this (and the rest of the solution) and simply say that the only solution is x=-4%2F5

However, if you have learned about complex/imaginary numbers, then...

x=%27%27%2B-sqrt%28-5%2F4%29

x=%28i%2Asqrt%285%29%29%2F2 or x=-%28i%2Asqrt%285%29%29%2F2

So if you have learned about complex/imaginary numbers, then there are three solutions and they are x=-4%2F5, x=%28i%2Asqrt%285%29%29%2F2 or x=-%28i%2Asqrt%285%29%29%2F2

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

%286x-5%29%286x%2B5%29 Start with the given expression.

Now let's FOIL the expression.

Remember, when you FOIL an expression, you follow this procedure:

%28highlight%286x%29-5%29%28highlight%286x%29%2B5%29 Multiply the First terms:%286%2Ax%29%2A%286%2Ax%29=36%2Ax%5E2.

%28highlight%286x%29-5%29%286x%2Bhighlight%285%29%29 Multiply the Outer terms:%286%2Ax%29%2A%285%29=30%2Ax.

%286x%2Bhighlight%28-5%29%29%28highlight%286x%29%2B5%29 Multiply the Inner terms:%28-5%29%2A%286%2Ax%29=-30%2Ax.

%286x%2Bhighlight%28-5%29%29%286x%2Bhighlight%285%29%29 Multiply the Last terms:%28-5%29%2A%285%29=-25.

---------------------------------------------------
So we have the terms: 36%2Ax%5E2, 30%2Ax, -30%2Ax, -25

36%2Ax%5E2%2B30%2Ax-30%2Ax-25 Now add every term listed above to make a single expression.

36x%5E2-25 Now combine like terms.

So %286x-5%29%286x%2B5%29 FOILs to 36x%5E2-25.

In other words, %286x-5%29%286x%2B5%29=36x%5E2-25.

test/597922: 3x^2-36x+60. Can you help me solve this as a grouping polynomial.

Answer 378399 by jim_thompson5910(28708) About Me  on 2012-04-11 21:28:00 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!

3x%5E2-36x%2B60 Start with the given expression.

3%28x%5E2-12x%2B20%29 Factor out the GCF 3.

Now let's try to factor the inner expression x%5E2-12x%2B20

---------------------------------------------------------------

Looking at the expression x%5E2-12x%2B20, we can see that the first coefficient is 1, the second coefficient is -12, and the last term is 20.

Now multiply the first coefficient 1 by the last term 20 to get %281%29%2820%29=20.

Now the question is: what two whole numbers multiply to 20 (the previous product) and add to the second coefficient -12?

To find these two numbers, we need to list all of the factors of 20 (the previous product).

Factors of 20:
1,2,4,5,10,20
-1,-2,-4,-5,-10,-20

Note: list the negative of each factor. This will allow us to find all possible combinations.

These factors pair up and multiply to 20.
1*20 = 20
2*10 = 20
4*5 = 20
(-1)*(-20) = 20
(-2)*(-10) = 20
(-4)*(-5) = 20

Now let's add up each pair of factors to see if one pair adds to the middle coefficient -12:

First NumberSecond NumberSum
1201+20=21
2102+10=12
454+5=9
-1-20-1+(-20)=-21
-2-10-2+(-10)=-12
-4-5-4+(-5)=-9

From the table, we can see that the two numbers -2 and -10 add to -12 (the middle coefficient).

So the two numbers -2 and -10 both multiply to 20 and add to -12

Now replace the middle term -12x with -2x-10x. Remember, -2 and -10 add to -12. So this shows us that -2x-10x=-12x.

x%5E2%2Bhighlight%28-2x-10x%29%2B20 Replace the second term -12x with -2x-10x.

%28x%5E2-2x%29%2B%28-10x%2B20%29 Group the terms into two pairs.

x%28x-2%29%2B%28-10x%2B20%29 Factor out the GCF x from the first group.

x%28x-2%29-10%28x-2%29 Factor out 10 from the second group. The goal of this step is to make the terms in the second parenthesis equal to the terms in the first parenthesis.

%28x-10%29%28x-2%29 Combine like terms. Or factor out the common term x-2

--------------------------------------------------

So 3%28x%5E2-12x%2B20%29 then factors further to 3%28x-10%29%28x-2%29

===============================================================

Answer:

So 3x%5E2-36x%2B60 completely factors to 3%28x-10%29%28x-2%29.

In other words, 3x%5E2-36x%2B60=3%28x-10%29%28x-2%29.

Note: you can check the answer by expanding 3%28x-10%29%28x-2%29 to get 3x%5E2-36x%2B60 or by graphing the original expression and the answer (the two graphs should be identical).

Let x = original side of the square

"If 6cm is added to each side of a square", then the new side length of the square is x+6 cm

The perimeter is equal to 4 times the side length (since each side is equal and all sides are added up)

So P = 4s. But P = 48 and s = x+6, so

P = 4s

48 = 4(x+6)

From here, solve for x

48 = 4x+24

48-24 = 4x

24 = 4x

24/4 = x

6 = x

x = 6

So the side length of the original square is 6 cm.

12% of 6.6 billion is 0.12*6.6 = 0.792

So 12% of 6.6 billion is 792 million.

Therefore, 792 million people have this disease.

-------------------------------------------------------

Now we need to convert 50 gallons into milliliters.

It turns out that

1 gallon = 3785.41178 mL

Note: this is something you either memorize or you have to look up.

Multiply both sides by 50 to get

50*1 gallon = 50*3785.41178 mL

50 gallon = 189270.589 mL

So 50 gallons converts to 189,270.589 mL. Round down to get 189,270

This means that one 50 gallon vat can cure 189,270 people.

Now divide 792 million (7.92 x 10^8) by 189,270 (1.8927 x 10^5) to get

(7.92 x 10^8)/(1.8927 x 10^5)

(7.92/1.8927) x ((10^8)/(10^5))

4.18449833571089 x 10^(8-5)

4.18449833571089 x 10^3

and then convert this answer to standard decimal notation to get 4,184.4983357108

and then round up to get the final answer of 4,185 vats

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Start with the given system of equations:
system%285x%2B2y=8%2C7x%2B8y=3%29

-4%285x%2B2y%29=-4%288%29 Multiply the both sides of the first equation by -4.

-20x-8y=-32 Distribute and multiply.

So we have the new system of equations:
system%28-20x-8y=-32%2C7x%2B8y=3%29

Now add the equations together. You can do this by simply adding the two left sides and the two right sides separately like this:

%28-20x-8y%29%2B%287x%2B8y%29=%28-32%29%2B%283%29

%28-20x%2B7x%29%2B%28-8y%2B8y%29=-32%2B3 Group like terms.

-13x%2B0y=-29 Combine like terms.

-13x=-29 Simplify.

x=%28-29%29%2F%28-13%29 Divide both sides by -13 to isolate x.

x=29%2F13 Reduce.

------------------------------------------------------------------

-20x-8y=-32 Now go back to the first equation.

-20%2829%2F13%29-8y=-32 Plug in x=29%2F13.

-580%2F13-8y=-32 Multiply.

13%28-580%2Fcross%2813%29-8y%29=13%28-32%29 Multiply both sides by the LCD 13 to clear any fractions.

-580-104y=-416 Distribute and multiply.

-104y=-416%2B580 Add 580 to both sides.

-104y=164 Combine like terms on the right side.

y=%28164%29%2F%28-104%29 Divide both sides by -104 to isolate y.

y=-41%2F26 Reduce.

So the solutions are x=29%2F13 and y=-41%2F26.

Which form the ordered pair .

This means that the system is consistent and independent.

Probability-and-statistics/597772: A bag contains 8 apples and 6 oranges. If you select 7 pieces of fruit without looking, how many ways can you get exactly 6 apples?
Can you please show me how to work this problem.... I think it is 8!/6! = 56???

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If you have 7 selections, and 6 of them are taken up by apples, then the last selection must be an orange.

There are 8 apples. So there are 8 C 6 = (8!)/(6!(8-6)!) = 28 ways to select 6 apples (from 8)

There are 6 oranges. Since the there's only one spot for an orange, there are only 6 ways to select an orange.

So multiply these results to get 28*6 = 168

This means that there are 168 ways to select exactly 6 apples.

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/597767: What expression represents the quotient (8x^6z^4+4x^4z)/(4x^2z)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(8x^6z^4+4x^4z)/(4x^2z)

(8x^6z^4)/(4x^2z)+(4x^4z)/(4x^2z)

(8/4)x^(6-2)z^(4-1)+(4/4)x^(4-2)z^(1-1)

2x^4z^3+x^2z^0

2x^4z^3+x^2

So the quotient is 2x^4z^3+x^2

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
a) it's a trinomial --- True, there are 3 monomial terms.

b)it can not be evaluated at x=-1/3 --- False, it can be evaluated at x = -1/3 (doing so gives you 158/27)

c)it has a coefficient of 8 --- False, it has a coefficient of -8 but not 8.

d) it is a cubic --- True, the term with the largest exponent over the variable is x^3, which means that this is a 3rd degree polynomial (and that it's a cubic)
