You can put this solution on YOUR website!The basic idea is to replace one variable with another expression (of that other variable) so you can eliminate one variable.
This way, you'll have a single equation with one variable. You then solve that equation to find the value of that variable. Then you use the solution to find the value of the previously eliminated variable.
=======================================================
# 1
y=3x-4
y= -5x + 4
y=3x-4
-5x+4=3x-4 ... Note: I'm replacing the 'y' with -5x+4 (since y = -5x+4)
-5x-3x=-4-4
-8x=-8
x=-8/(-8)
x = 1
-------------
y = 3x-4
y = 3(1)-4 ... Here I'm replacing 'x' with 1 (since x = 1)
y = 3-4
y = -1
So x = 1 and y = -1
=======================================================
# 2
y=2x+13
y=-4x-23
y=2x+13
-4x-23=2x+13
-4x-2x=13+23
-6x=36
x=36/(-6)
x = -6
--------------
y = 2x+13
y = 2(-6)+13
y = -12+13
y = 1
So x = -6 and y = 1
=======================================================
# 3
y=3x+20
y=x+4
y=3x+20
x+4=3x+20
x-3x=20-4
-2x=16
x=16/(-2)
x = -8
----------------
y = 3x+20
y = 3(-8)+20
y = -24+20
y = -4
So x = -8 and y = -4
=======================================================
# 4
y=-4x-8
y=3x+13
y=-4x-8
3x+13=-4x-8
3x+4x=-8-13
7x=-21
x=-21/7
x=-3
-----------------
y = -4x-8
y = -4(-3)-8
y = 12-8
y = 4
So x = -3 and y = 4
=======================================================
# 5
-x+y=6
y=-7+14
There's a typo in the second equation. Please repost this one. Thanks
=======================================================
# 6
y=-5x+12
x+y=-3
x+y=-3
x+(-5x+12)=-3
x-5x+12=-3
x-5x=-3-12
-4x=-15
x=-15/(-4)
x=15/4
----------------
y = -5x+12
y = -5(15/4)+12
y = -75/4+12
y = -75/4+48/4
y = -27/4
So x = 15/4 and y = -27/4
=======================================================
# 7
x+y=-6
y=-3x-10
x+y=-6
x+(-3x-10)=-6
x-3x-10=-6
x-3x=-6+10
-2x=4
x=4/(-2)
x = -2
------------------
y = -3x-10
y = -3(-2)-10
y = 6-10
y = -4
So x = -2 and y = -4

-4x+5y=-15
4x+y=21
First we need to solve one equation for one variable. I'm going to solve the second equation for y.
4x+y=21
y=21-4x
y = -4x+21
-----------
Now use substitution to solve
-4x+5y=-15
-4x+5(-4x+21)=-15
-4x-20x+105=-15
-4x-20x=-15-105
-24x=-120
x=-120/(-24)
x = 5
-----------
y = -4x+21
y = -4(5)+21
y = -20+21
y = 1
So x = 5 and y = 1

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
 Start with the given expression.
Now let's FOIL the expression.
Remember, when you FOIL an expression, you follow this procedure:
 Multiply the First terms:  .
 Multiply the Outer terms:  .
 Multiply the Inner terms:  .
 Multiply the Last terms:  .
---------------------------------------------------
So we have the terms: , , ,
 Now add every term listed above to make a single expression.

Answer 378399 by jim_thompson5910(28708) on 2012-04-11 21:28:00 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
 Start with the given expression.
 Factor out the GCF  .
Now let's try to factor the inner expression
---------------------------------------------------------------
Looking at the expression , we can see that the first coefficient is , the second coefficient is , and the last term is .
Now multiply the first coefficient by the last term to get .
Now the question is: what two whole numbers multiply to (the previous product) and add to the second coefficient ?
To find these two numbers, we need to list all of the factors of (the previous product).
Factors of  :
1,2,4,5,10,20
-1,-2,-4,-5,-10,-20
Note: list the negative of each factor. This will allow us to find all possible combinations.
These factors pair up and multiply to .
1*20 = 20
2*10 = 20
4*5 = 20
(-1)*(-20) = 20
(-2)*(-10) = 20
(-4)*(-5) = 20
Now let's add up each pair of factors to see if one pair adds to the middle coefficient :
| First Number | Second Number | Sum | | 1 | 20 | 1+20=21 | | 2 | 10 | 2+10=12 | | 4 | 5 | 4+5=9 | | -1 | -20 | -1+(-20)=-21 | | -2 | -10 | -2+(-10)=-12 | | -4 | -5 | -4+(-5)=-9 |
From the table, we can see that the two numbers and add to (the middle coefficient).
So the two numbers and both multiply to and add to
Now replace the middle term with . Remember, and add to . So this shows us that .
 Replace the second term with .
 Group the terms into two pairs.
 Factor out the GCF from the first group.
 Factor out from the second group. The goal of this step is to make the terms in the second parenthesis equal to the terms in the first parenthesis.
 Combine like terms. Or factor out the common term
--------------------------------------------------
So  then factors further to
===============================================================
Answer:
So  completely factors to  .
In other words,  .
Note: you can check the answer by expanding to get or by graphing the original expression and the answer (the two graphs should be identical).

Trigonometry-basics/597824: Suppose that a 16-foot ladder is leaning against a wall, making a 75 angle with the ground (as measured from a perpendicular line from the base of the ladder to the wall). How high up the wall is the end of the ladder? 1 solutions
Answer 378355 by jim_thompson5910(28708) on 2012-04-11 18:59:55 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!sin(theta) = opposite/hypotenuse
sin(75) = x/16
16*sin(75) = x
x = 16*sin(75)
x = 16*0.965925826289068
x = 15.4548132206251
So the ladder reaches approximately 15.4548 feet up the wall.

Volume/597820: If the radius is 6 and the volume is 8595.4 cubic centimeters, how do you find the length of a cylinder?
e-mail: ky_taylor2002@yahoo.com 1 solutions
Answer 378352 by jim_thompson5910(28708) on 2012-04-11 18:56:20 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!V = pi*r^2*h
8595.4 = (3.14159)*(6)^2*h
8595.4 = (3.14159)*(36)*h
8595.4 = 113.09724*h
8595.4/113.09724 = h
76.0000862974198 = h
h = 76.0000862974198
So the height (or length) of the cylinder is approximately 76.0000862974198 cm

Volume/597814: The pyramid and box above have the same W, L, and H. The volume of the pyramid is 21 cm3. What is the volume of the box?
1 solutions
Answer 378347 by jim_thompson5910(28708) on 2012-04-11 18:50:20 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Square Pyramid:
Volume = (Length*Width*Height)/3
V = (LWH)/3
21 = (LWH)/3
21*3 = LWH
63 = LWH
Since the volume of a rectangular box with length, width and height of L, W, and H is V = LWH, and LWH = 63, this means that the volume of the box is 63 cubic centimeters.

Geometry_Word_Problems/597809: If 6cm is added to each side of a square, its perimeter becomes 48cm. how long is each side of the square?
This is what I've done, but the answer seems wrong.
Let x be one of the sides of the square.
Then, 6 + x will be the rest of the sides of the square
4x + 6 + x = 48
(combine like terms)
5x + 6 = 48
(subtract 6 from both sides)
5x = 42
(divide 5 from both sides)
x = 8.4
I honestly don't know. Probably the "Let's" statement I've done wrong. 1 solutions
Answer 378345 by jim_thompson5910(28708) on 2012-04-11 18:48:21 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Let x = original side of the square
"If 6cm is added to each side of a square", then the new side length of the square is x+6 cm
The perimeter is equal to 4 times the side length (since each side is equal and all sides are added up)
So P = 4s. But P = 48 and s = x+6, so
P = 4s
48 = 4(x+6)
From here, solve for x
48 = 4x+24
48-24 = 4x
24 = 4x
24/4 = x
6 = x
x = 6
So the side length of the original square is 6 cm.

Unit_Conversion_Word_Problems/597798: A company developed a cure for a disease that inflicts 12% of the world's population (World Population is 6,600,000,000). A single dose of 1mL of cure per person is enough. If the cure is produced in 50 gallon vats, how many vats would be needed??
Thanks so much and I would like to know how to do this problem for my Exam that is coming up :) 1 solutions
Answer 378339 by jim_thompson5910(28708) on 2012-04-11 18:38:58 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!12% of 6.6 billion is 0.12*6.6 = 0.792
So 12% of 6.6 billion is 792 million.
Therefore, 792 million people have this disease.
-------------------------------------------------------
Now we need to convert 50 gallons into milliliters.
It turns out that
1 gallon = 3785.41178 mL
Note: this is something you either memorize or you have to look up.
Multiply both sides by 50 to get
50*1 gallon = 50*3785.41178 mL
50 gallon = 189270.589 mL
So 50 gallons converts to 189,270.589 mL. Round down to get 189,270
This means that one 50 gallon vat can cure 189,270 people.
Now divide 792 million (7.92 x 10^8) by 189,270 (1.8927 x 10^5) to get
(7.92 x 10^8)/(1.8927 x 10^5)
(7.92/1.8927) x ((10^8)/(10^5))
4.18449833571089 x 10^(8-5)
4.18449833571089 x 10^3
and then convert this answer to standard decimal notation to get 4,184.4983357108
and then round up to get the final answer of 4,185 vats

Probability-and-statistics/597772: A bag contains 8 apples and 6 oranges. If you select 7 pieces of fruit without looking, how many ways can you get exactly 6 apples?
Can you please show me how to work this problem.... I think it is 8!/6! = 56??? 1 solutions
Answer 378337 by jim_thompson5910(28708) on 2012-04-11 18:26:20 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!If you have 7 selections, and 6 of them are taken up by apples, then the last selection must be an orange.
There are 8 apples. So there are 8 C 6 = (8!)/(6!(8-6)!) = 28 ways to select 6 apples (from 8)
There are 6 oranges. Since the there's only one spot for an orange, there are only 6 ways to select an orange.
So multiply these results to get 28*6 = 168
This means that there are 168 ways to select exactly 6 apples.
