C(n,r) = (n!)/(r!(n-r)!)

C(22,3) = (22!)/(3!*(22-3)!)

C(22,3) = (22!)/(3!*19!)

C(22,3) = (22*21*20*19!)/(3!*19!)

C(22,3) = (22*21*20)/(3!)

C(22,3) = (22*21*20)/(3*2*1)

C(22,3) = (9240)/(6)

C(22,3) = 1540

So there are 1540 different ways.

Quadratic_Equations/619066: what is the vertex of x^2-4?!
I think I did it wrong because once I plugged in my input values(-2,-1,0,1,2) I got (-2,-16) (-1,-4) (0,0) (1,-4) (2,-16) so once I graphed it I got a downward parabola, and isnt it supposed to be upward since my x^2 is positive?! Please help me figure this out! Also, once for the the vertex points I did (x+2)=0 and (x-2)=0 to solve for x then I simply plugged it in to find y; however, once I did that my vertex points turned out to be (-2,16) (2,16)! This shouldnt be right since the vertex is the highest and lowest value! Please help... Thank you!

I'm not sure how you're getting those output values. When x = -2, y is...

y = x^2 - 4

y = (-2)^2 - 4

y = 4 - 4

y = 0

So when x = -2, y = 0. So we have the point (-2,0)

Hopefully that will get you on the right track. If not, please let me know.

Answer 388930 by jim_thompson5910(28503) About Me  on 2012-06-06 15:51:12 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Looking at the expression 3y%5E2%2B13y%2B14, we can see that the first coefficient is 3, the second coefficient is 13, and the last term is 14.

Now multiply the first coefficient 3 by the last term 14 to get %283%29%2814%29=42.

Now the question is: what two whole numbers multiply to 42 (the previous product) and add to the second coefficient 13?

To find these two numbers, we need to list all of the factors of 42 (the previous product).

Factors of 42:
1,2,3,6,7,14,21,42
-1,-2,-3,-6,-7,-14,-21,-42

Note: list the negative of each factor. This will allow us to find all possible combinations.

These factors pair up and multiply to 42.
1*42 = 42
2*21 = 42
3*14 = 42
6*7 = 42
(-1)*(-42) = 42
(-2)*(-21) = 42
(-3)*(-14) = 42
(-6)*(-7) = 42

Now let's add up each pair of factors to see if one pair adds to the middle coefficient 13:

First NumberSecond NumberSum
1421+42=43
2212+21=23
3143+14=17
676+7=13
-1-42-1+(-42)=-43
-2-21-2+(-21)=-23
-3-14-3+(-14)=-17
-6-7-6+(-7)=-13

From the table, we can see that the two numbers 6 and 7 add to 13 (the middle coefficient).

So the two numbers 6 and 7 both multiply to 42 and add to 13

Now replace the middle term 13y with 6y%2B7y. Remember, 6 and 7 add to 13. So this shows us that 6y%2B7y=13y.

3y%5E2%2Bhighlight%286y%2B7y%29%2B14 Replace the second term 13y with 6y%2B7y.

%283y%5E2%2B6y%29%2B%287y%2B14%29 Group the terms into two pairs.

3y%28y%2B2%29%2B%287y%2B14%29 Factor out the GCF 3y from the first group.

3y%28y%2B2%29%2B7%28y%2B2%29 Factor out 7 from the second group. The goal of this step is to make the terms in the second parenthesis equal to the terms in the first parenthesis.

%283y%2B7%29%28y%2B2%29 Combine like terms. Or factor out the common term y%2B2

===============================================================

Answer:

So 3y%5E2%2B13y%2B14 factors to %283y%2B7%29%28y%2B2%29.

In other words, 3y%5E2%2B13y%2B14=%283y%2B7%29%28y%2B2%29.

Note: you can check the answer by expanding %283y%2B7%29%28y%2B2%29 to get 3y%5E2%2B13y%2B14 or by graphing the original expression and the answer (the two graphs should be identical).

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Note: is the first point . So this means that x%5B1%5D=6 and y%5B1%5D=17.
Also, is the second point . So this means that x%5B2%5D=-17 and y%5B2%5D=11.

m=%28y%5B2%5D-y%5B1%5D%29%2F%28x%5B2%5D-x%5B1%5D%29 Start with the slope formula.

m=%2811-17%29%2F%28-17-6%29 Plug in y%5B2%5D=11, y%5B1%5D=17, x%5B2%5D=-17, and x%5B1%5D=6

m=%28-6%29%2F%28-17-6%29 Subtract 17 from 11 to get -6

m=%28-6%29%2F%28-23%29 Subtract 6 from -17 to get -23

m=6%2F23 Reduce

So the slope of the line that goes through the points and is m=6%2F23

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/618191: Factor: 4p2 - 25

Answer 388751 by jim_thompson5910(28503) About Me  on 2012-06-05 18:58:53 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!

4p%5E2-25 Start with the given expression.

%282p%29%5E2-25 Rewrite 4p%5E2 as %282p%29%5E2.

%282p%29%5E2-%285%29%5E2 Rewrite 25 as %285%29%5E2.

Notice how we have a difference of squares A%5E2-B%5E2 where in this case A=2p and B=5.

So let's use the difference of squares formula A%5E2-B%5E2=%28A%2BB%29%28A-B%29 to factor the expression:

A%5E2-B%5E2=%28A%2BB%29%28A-B%29 Start with the difference of squares formula.

%282p%29%5E2-%285%29%5E2=%282p%2B5%29%282p-5%29 Plug in A=2p and B=5.

So this shows us that 4p%5E2-25 factors to %282p%2B5%29%282p-5%29.

In other words 4p%5E2-25=%282p%2B5%29%282p-5%29.

Equations/618190: how do I determine whether x=13 is a solution of the ordered pair (13,5)
1 solutions

Answer 388748 by jim_thompson5910(28503) About Me  on 2012-06-05 18:49:22 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
In the ordered pair (13,5), this states that (x,y) = (13,5), so x = 13

So if we have (13,5), then we know that x = 13

Note: I think you meant to say whether (13,5) was a solution to x = 13

So the answer is yes.

P(n,r) = (n!)/((n-r)!)

P(12,3) = (12!)/((12-3)!)

P(12,3) = (12!)/(9!)

P(12,3) = (12*11*10*9!)/(9!)

P(12,3) = 12*11*10

P(12,3) = 1320

1/x = 2/x^2

1*x^2 = 2x

x^2 = 2x

x^2 - 2x = 0

x(x-2) = 0

x = 0 or x-2 = 0

x = 0 or x = 2

Keep in mind that you cannot divide by zero. So the only solution is x = 2
