Surface-area/628498: Use a formula to find the area.
(THE TOPIC IS ABOUT AREA)
1. Mr. Cruz will build a house with a floor area of 92 square meters. If his lot is 32 meters by 25 meters, how much space will be left for his garden and backyard?
Please answer immediately. Thanks in advance!

Answer 395665 by jim_thompson5910(28598) About Me  on 2012-07-14 22:30:07 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The area of the lot is 32*25 = 800 square meters

His house will sit on 92 square meters of that total area. So there will be 800 - 92 = 708 square meters left for his garden and backyard.

Trigonometry-basics/628468: Without graphing, determine whether the function y = 7(0.28)^x represents exponential growth or exponential decay.
1 solutions

Answer 395648 by jim_thompson5910(28598) About Me  on 2012-07-14 19:41:36 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
In general, for y=a%2Ab%5Ex, if 0%3Cb%3C1, then this represents exponential decay.

Also, for y=a%2Ab%5Ex, if b%3E1, then this represents exponential growth.

Since b=0.28, this means that 0%3Cb%3C1 is true (since 0%3C0.28%3C1 is true)

So this function represents exponential decay.

Rectangles/628466: A quality control inspector found 6 defective video cassettes in a shipment of 4000 cassettes. At this rate, how many cassettes would be expected to be defective in a shipment of 10,000 cassettes?

Mean:

mu = np

mu = 10000*(6/4000)

mu = 15

So there are 15 defective cassettes expected in the shipment.

This sounds like a binomial distribution problem.

Standard deviation:

sigma = sqrt(n*p*(1-p))

sigma = sqrt(400*0.5*(1-0.5))

sigma = 10

So the standard deviation is 10.

Linear_Equations_And_Systems_Word_Problems/628464: Here is my question....How would I know, in a linear story problem, that I would need to use X and Y variables or I could use only X variable? If you have two unknown quantities, then you would use two variables to represent them (eg: length and width). If you have one unknown quantity, then you would use one variable (eg: time)

Without the actual specific problem, there's not much more I can say about it.

Answer 395631 by jim_thompson5910(28598) About Me  on 2012-07-14 18:28:02 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!

First let's find the slope of the line through the points and

Note: is the first point . So this means that x%5B1%5D=-5 and y%5B1%5D=10.
Also, is the second point . So this means that x%5B2%5D=-4 and y%5B2%5D=3.

m=%28y%5B2%5D-y%5B1%5D%29%2F%28x%5B2%5D-x%5B1%5D%29 Start with the slope formula.

m=%283-10%29%2F%28-4--5%29 Plug in y%5B2%5D=3, y%5B1%5D=10, x%5B2%5D=-4, and x%5B1%5D=-5

m=%28-7%29%2F%28-4--5%29 Subtract 10 from 3 to get -7

m=%28-7%29%2F%281%29 Subtract -5 from -4 to get 1

m=-7 Reduce

So the slope of the line that goes through the points and is m=-7

Now let's use the point slope formula:

y-y%5B1%5D=m%28x-x%5B1%5D%29 Start with the point slope formula

y-10=-7%28x--5%29 Plug in m=-7, x%5B1%5D=-5, and y%5B1%5D=10

y-10=-7%28x%2B5%29 Rewrite x--5 as x%2B5

y-10=-7x%2B-7%285%29 Distribute

y-10=-7x-35 Multiply

y=-7x-35%2B10 Add 10 to both sides.

y=-7x-25 Combine like terms.

So the equation that goes through the points and is y=-7x-25

Equations/628384: 2^(3x+5)=8^2
1 solutions

Answer 395589 by jim_thompson5910(28598) About Me  on 2012-07-14 13:45:03 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
2%5E%283x%2B5%29=8%5E2

2%5E%283x%2B5%29=%282%5E3%29%5E2

2%5E%283x%2B5%29=2%5E%283%2A2%29

2%5E%283x%2B5%29=2%5E%286%29

Since the bases are equal (to 2), the exponents are equal. So...

3x%2B5=6

3x=6-5

3x=1

x=1%2F3

So the solution is x=1%2F3

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
d = rt

13 = 85t

13/85 = t

t = 13/85

t = 0.1529

So it will take roughly 0.1529 hours or roughly 0.1529*60 = 9.174 minutes

Linear-equations/628257: Write the slope - intercept equation for the line that passes through (-1,-3) and (-2,5)
1 solutions

Answer 395495 by jim_thompson5910(28598) About Me  on 2012-07-13 18:52:23 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!

First let's find the slope of the line through the points and

Note: is the first point . So this means that x%5B1%5D=-1 and y%5B1%5D=-3.
Also, is the second point . So this means that x%5B2%5D=-2 and y%5B2%5D=5.

m=%28y%5B2%5D-y%5B1%5D%29%2F%28x%5B2%5D-x%5B1%5D%29 Start with the slope formula.

m=%285--3%29%2F%28-2--1%29 Plug in y%5B2%5D=5, y%5B1%5D=-3, x%5B2%5D=-2, and x%5B1%5D=-1

m=%288%29%2F%28-2--1%29 Subtract -3 from 5 to get 8

m=%288%29%2F%28-1%29 Subtract -1 from -2 to get -1

m=-8 Reduce

So the slope of the line that goes through the points and is m=-8

Now let's use the point slope formula:

y-y%5B1%5D=m%28x-x%5B1%5D%29 Start with the point slope formula

y--3=-8%28x--1%29 Plug in m=-8, x%5B1%5D=-1, and y%5B1%5D=-3

y--3=-8%28x%2B1%29 Rewrite x--1 as x%2B1

y%2B3=-8%28x%2B1%29 Rewrite y--3 as y%2B3

y%2B3=-8x%2B-8%281%29 Distribute

y%2B3=-8x-8 Multiply

y=-8x-8-3 Subtract 3 from both sides.

y=-8x-11 Combine like terms.

So the equation that goes through the points and is y=-8x-11
