You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Looking at y=-4x%2B2 we can see that the equation is in slope-intercept form y=mx%2Bb where the slope is m=-4 and the y-intercept is b=2

Since b=2 this tells us that the y-intercept is .Remember the y-intercept is the point where the graph intersects with the y-axis

So we have one point

Now since the slope is comprised of the "rise" over the "run" this means
slope=rise%2Frun

Also, because the slope is -4, this means:

rise%2Frun=-4%2F1

which shows us that the rise is -4 and the run is 1. This means that to go from point to point, we can go down 4 and over 1

So starting at , go down 4 units

and to the right 1 unit to get to the next point

Now draw a line through these points to graph y=-4x%2B2

So this is the graph of y=-4x%2B2 through the points and

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

First let's find the slope of the line through the points and

Note: is the first point . So this means that x%5B1%5D=-5 and y%5B1%5D=4.
Also, is the second point . So this means that x%5B2%5D=-5 and y%5B2%5D=1.

m=%28y%5B2%5D-y%5B1%5D%29%2F%28x%5B2%5D-x%5B1%5D%29 Start with the slope formula.

m=%281-4%29%2F%28-5--5%29 Plug in y%5B2%5D=1, y%5B1%5D=4, x%5B2%5D=-5, and x%5B1%5D=-5

m=%28-3%29%2F%28-5--5%29 Subtract 4 from 1 to get -3

m=%28-3%29%2F%280%29 Subtract -5 from -5 to get 0

Remember, you cannot divide by zero. So this means that the slope is undefined.

Since the slope is undefined, this means that the equation of the line through the points and is x=-5.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
y = mx + b

y = 2x + b

4 = 2(1) + b

4 = 2 + b

4 - 2 = b

2 = b

b = 2

So the answer is y = 2x + 2

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

50x%5E2-50x-12 Start with the given expression.

2%2825x%5E2-25x-6%29 Factor out the GCF 2.

Now let's try to factor the inner expression 25x%5E2-25x-6

---------------------------------------------------------------

Looking at the expression 25x%5E2-25x-6, we can see that the first coefficient is 25, the second coefficient is -25, and the last term is -6.

Now multiply the first coefficient 25 by the last term -6 to get %2825%29%28-6%29=-150.

Now the question is: what two whole numbers multiply to -150 (the previous product) and add to the second coefficient -25?

To find these two numbers, we need to list all of the factors of -150 (the previous product).

Factors of -150:
1,2,3,5,6,10,15,25,30,50,75,150
-1,-2,-3,-5,-6,-10,-15,-25,-30,-50,-75,-150

Note: list the negative of each factor. This will allow us to find all possible combinations.

These factors pair up and multiply to -150.
1*(-150) = -150
2*(-75) = -150
3*(-50) = -150
5*(-30) = -150
6*(-25) = -150
10*(-15) = -150
(-1)*(150) = -150
(-2)*(75) = -150
(-3)*(50) = -150
(-5)*(30) = -150
(-6)*(25) = -150
(-10)*(15) = -150

Now let's add up each pair of factors to see if one pair adds to the middle coefficient -25:

First NumberSecond NumberSum
1-1501+(-150)=-149
2-752+(-75)=-73
3-503+(-50)=-47
5-305+(-30)=-25
6-256+(-25)=-19
10-1510+(-15)=-5
-1150-1+150=149
-275-2+75=73
-350-3+50=47
-530-5+30=25
-625-6+25=19
-1015-10+15=5

From the table, we can see that the two numbers 5 and -30 add to -25 (the middle coefficient).

So the two numbers 5 and -30 both multiply to -150 and add to -25

Now replace the middle term -25x with 5x-30x. Remember, 5 and -30 add to -25. So this shows us that 5x-30x=-25x.

25x%5E2%2Bhighlight%285x-30x%29-6 Replace the second term -25x with 5x-30x.

%2825x%5E2%2B5x%29%2B%28-30x-6%29 Group the terms into two pairs.

5x%285x%2B1%29%2B%28-30x-6%29 Factor out the GCF 5x from the first group.

5x%285x%2B1%29-6%285x%2B1%29 Factor out 6 from the second group. The goal of this step is to make the terms in the second parenthesis equal to the terms in the first parenthesis.

%285x-6%29%285x%2B1%29 Combine like terms. Or factor out the common term 5x%2B1

--------------------------------------------------

So 2%2825x%5E2-25x-6%29 then factors further to 2%285x-6%29%285x%2B1%29

===============================================================

Answer:

So 50x%5E2-50x-12 completely factors to 2%285x-6%29%285x%2B1%29.

In other words, 50x%5E2-50x-12=2%285x-6%29%285x%2B1%29.

Note: you can check the answer by expanding 2%285x-6%29%285x%2B1%29 to get 50x%5E2-50x-12 or by graphing the original expression and the answer (the two graphs should be identical).

Answer 445763 by jim_thompson5910(28595) About Me  on 2013-03-21 19:48:45 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Looking at the expression 4a%5E2%2B7ab-2b%5E2, we can see that the first coefficient is 4, the second coefficient is 7, and the last coefficient is -2.

Now multiply the first coefficient 4 by the last coefficient -2 to get %284%29%28-2%29=-8.

Now the question is: what two whole numbers multiply to -8 (the previous product) and add to the second coefficient 7?

To find these two numbers, we need to list all of the factors of -8 (the previous product).

Factors of -8:
1,2,4,8
-1,-2,-4,-8

Note: list the negative of each factor. This will allow us to find all possible combinations.

These factors pair up and multiply to -8.
1*(-8) = -8
2*(-4) = -8
(-1)*(8) = -8
(-2)*(4) = -8

Now let's add up each pair of factors to see if one pair adds to the middle coefficient 7:

First NumberSecond NumberSum
1-81+(-8)=-7
2-42+(-4)=-2
-18-1+8=7
-24-2+4=2

From the table, we can see that the two numbers -1 and 8 add to 7 (the middle coefficient).

So the two numbers -1 and 8 both multiply to -8 and add to 7

Now replace the middle term 7ab with -ab%2B8ab. Remember, -1 and 8 add to 7. So this shows us that -ab%2B8ab=7ab.

4a%5E2%2Bhighlight%28-ab%2B8ab%29-2b%5E2 Replace the second term 7ab with -ab%2B8ab.

%284a%5E2-ab%29%2B%288ab-2b%5E2%29 Group the terms into two pairs.

a%284a-b%29%2B%288ab-2b%5E2%29 Factor out the GCF a from the first group.

a%284a-b%29%2B2b%284a-b%29 Factor out 2b from the second group. The goal of this step is to make the terms in the second parenthesis equal to the terms in the first parenthesis.

%28a%2B2b%29%284a-b%29 Combine like terms. Or factor out the common term 4a-b

===============================================================

Answer:

So 4a%5E2%2B7ab-2b%5E2 factors to %28a%2B2b%29%284a-b%29.

In other words, 4a%5E2%2B7ab-2b%5E2=%28a%2B2b%29%284a-b%29.

Note: you can check the answer by expanding %28a%2B2b%29%284a-b%29 to get 4a%5E2%2B7ab-2b%5E2 or by graphing the original expression and the answer (the two graphs should be identical).

Here's what the completed table looks like

Keep in mind that p <--> q is only true if BOTH p AND q have the same truth value (ie both are true or false together)

Also, p --> q is only false when p is true and q is false. Otherwise it's true.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let

x = price of cheaper player
y = price of more expensive player

Since "One CD player is 3 times as much as another", we can say (according to the definition made above)

y = 3x

Together the two CD players would be $320, so x and y must add to 320

x+y = 320

x + 3x = 320 .... plug in y = 3x

4x = 320

Solve for x. Then use it to find y. I'll let you finish up.

Hint:

d = # of dogs
p = # of people

"She counted 16people and dogs combined" ----> d+p = 16 ----> d = 16 - p

"...and 38 legs" ----> 4d + 2p = 38

4d + 2p = 38

4(16-p) + 2p = 38

64 - 4p + 2p = 38

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x = P(B)

P(A) = 3*P(B) ... This is given when you are told that "Event A is 3 times more likely that Event B"

There are only two outcomes A and B. So their probabilities must add to 1

P(A) + P(B) = 1

3*P(B) + P(B) = 1

3*x + x = 1

4x = 1

x = 1/4

P(B) = 1/4 = 0.25

P(A) = 3*P(B)

P(A) = 3*(1/4)

P(A) = 3/4 = 0.75

So the probability of event A is 0.75

Yes the two are the same since x is on the pointed end of the > sign

So that means that x is less than 3.

x < 3 is a much better way to write it since you read from left to right naturally (assuming you do) compared to 3 > x where you have to read this from right to left (which is the opposite)

Also, when isolating variables, it's always a good idea to place them on the left side.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

First let's find the slope of the line through the points and

Note: is the first point . So this means that x%5B1%5D=1 and y%5B1%5D=5.
Also, is the second point . So this means that x%5B2%5D=-4 and y%5B2%5D=-5.

m=%28y%5B2%5D-y%5B1%5D%29%2F%28x%5B2%5D-x%5B1%5D%29 Start with the slope formula.

m=%28-5-5%29%2F%28-4-1%29 Plug in y%5B2%5D=-5, y%5B1%5D=5, x%5B2%5D=-4, and x%5B1%5D=1

m=%28-10%29%2F%28-4-1%29 Subtract 5 from -5 to get -10

m=%28-10%29%2F%28-5%29 Subtract 1 from -4 to get -5

m=2 Reduce

So the slope of the line that goes through the points and is m=2

Now let's use the point slope formula:

y-y%5B1%5D=m%28x-x%5B1%5D%29 Start with the point slope formula

y-5=2%28x-1%29 Plug in m=2, x%5B1%5D=1, and y%5B1%5D=5

y-5=2x%2B2%28-1%29 Distribute

y-5=2x-2 Multiply

y=2x-2%2B5 Add 5 to both sides.

y=2x%2B3 Combine like terms.

So the equation that goes through the points and is y=2x%2B3

Notice how the graph of y=2x%2B3 goes through the points and . So this visually verifies our answer.
Graph of y=2x%2B3 through the points and

I'll do the first one to get you started

Looking at the expression 15x%5E2%2B7x-2, we can see that the first coefficient is 15, the second coefficient is 7, and the last term is -2.

Now multiply the first coefficient 15 by the last term -2 to get %2815%29%28-2%29=-30.

Now the question is: what two whole numbers multiply to -30 (the previous product) and add to the second coefficient 7?

To find these two numbers, we need to list all of the factors of -30 (the previous product).

Factors of -30:
1,2,3,5,6,10,15,30
-1,-2,-3,-5,-6,-10,-15,-30

Note: list the negative of each factor. This will allow us to find all possible combinations.

These factors pair up and multiply to -30.
1*(-30) = -30
2*(-15) = -30
3*(-10) = -30
5*(-6) = -30
(-1)*(30) = -30
(-2)*(15) = -30
(-3)*(10) = -30
(-5)*(6) = -30

Now let's add up each pair of factors to see if one pair adds to the middle coefficient 7:

First NumberSecond NumberSum
1-301+(-30)=-29
2-152+(-15)=-13
3-103+(-10)=-7
5-65+(-6)=-1
-130-1+30=29
-215-2+15=13
-310-3+10=7
-56-5+6=1

From the table, we can see that the two numbers -3 and 10 add to 7 (the middle coefficient).

So the two numbers -3 and 10 both multiply to -30 and add to 7

Now replace the middle term 7x with -3x%2B10x. Remember, -3 and 10 add to 7. So this shows us that -3x%2B10x=7x.

15x%5E2%2Bhighlight%28-3x%2B10x%29-2 Replace the second term 7x with -3x%2B10x.

%2815x%5E2-3x%29%2B%2810x-2%29 Group the terms into two pairs.

3x%285x-1%29%2B%2810x-2%29 Factor out the GCF 3x from the first group.

3x%285x-1%29%2B2%285x-1%29 Factor out 2 from the second group. The goal of this step is to make the terms in the second parenthesis equal to the terms in the first parenthesis.

%283x%2B2%29%285x-1%29 Combine like terms. Or factor out the common term 5x-1

===============================================================

Answer:

So 15x%5E2%2B7x-2 factors to %283x%2B2%29%285x-1%29.

In other words, 15x%5E2%2B7x-2=%283x%2B2%29%285x-1%29.

Note: you can check the answer by expanding %283x%2B2%29%285x-1%29 to get 15x%5E2%2B7x-2 or by graphing the original expression and the answer (the two graphs should be identical).

Draw a circle to represent the factors of 12. So the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12 go in this circle.

The question is: Does the circle representing the factors of 9 go completely in the circle we just drew? Surely 1 and 3, which are factors of 9, are also factors of 12. However, 9 is a factor of 9, but it is NOT a factor of 12.

So you'll have a circle that overlaps the previous circle, but a piece of it will be outside of the previous circle. The factors 1,3 go in the piece that's inside the "factors of 12 circle" and the number "9" goes in the piece that's outside the "factors of 12 circle"

So B⊆A is false since not all elements in B are also in A.

Plug in each x to get a corresponding y value.

So for instance, when x = 0,

y+=+sqrt%28x%29

y+=+sqrt%280%29 Plug in x = 0

y+=+0 Take the square root of 0 to get 0

So when x = 0, y is y = 0

This is one row in your table.
-------------------------------------------------------

Another example: When x = 4

y+=+sqrt%28x%29

y+=+sqrt%284%29 Plug in x = 4

y+=+2 Take the square root of 4 to get 2

So when x = 4, y is y = 2

So another row will have 4, then 2

-------------------------------------------------------

Last example: When x = 6

y+=+sqrt%28x%29

y+=+sqrt%286%29 Plug in x = 4

y+=+2.449 You'll have to use a calculator here to get an approximation

So when x = 6, y is y = 2.449

-------------------------------------------------------

You use these steps to generate the y value of each of the x values.

Doing so will give you this table

x y
0 0
1 1
2 1.414
3 1.732
4 2
6 2.449
9 3
