You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Start with the given system of equations:
system%28-3x-10y=9%2C14x%2B18y=-22%29

9%28-3x-10y%29=9%289%29 Multiply the both sides of the first equation by 9.

-27x-90y=81 Distribute and multiply.

5%2814x%2B18y%29=5%28-22%29 Multiply the both sides of the second equation by 5.

70x%2B90y=-110 Distribute and multiply.

So we have the new system of equations:
system%28-27x-90y=81%2C70x%2B90y=-110%29

Now add the equations together. You can do this by simply adding the two left sides and the two right sides separately like this:

%28-27x-90y%29%2B%2870x%2B90y%29=%2881%29%2B%28-110%29

%28-27x%2B70x%29%2B%28-90y%2B90y%29=81%2B-110 Group like terms.

43x%2B0y=-29 Combine like terms.

43x=-29 Simplify.

x=%28-29%29%2F%2843%29 Divide both sides by 43 to isolate x.

------------------------------------------------------------------

-27x-90y=81 Now go back to the first equation.

-27%28-29%2F43%29-90y=81 Plug in x=-29%2F43.

783%2F43-90y=81 Multiply.

43%28783%2Fcross%2843%29-90y%29=43%2881%29 Multiply both sides by the LCD 43 to clear any fractions.

783-3870y=3483 Distribute and multiply.

-3870y=3483-783 Subtract 783 from both sides.

-3870y=2700 Combine like terms on the right side.

y=%282700%29%2F%28-3870%29 Divide both sides by -3870 to isolate y.

y=-30%2F43 Reduce.

So the solutions are x=-29%2F43 and y=-30%2F43.

Which form the ordered pair .

This means that the system is consistent and independent.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Start with the given system of equations:
system%282x-4y=40%2C8x-3y=82%29

3%282x-4y%29=3%2840%29 Multiply the both sides of the first equation by 3.

6x-12y=120 Distribute and multiply.

-4%288x-3y%29=-4%2882%29 Multiply the both sides of the second equation by -4.

-32x%2B12y=-328 Distribute and multiply.

So we have the new system of equations:
system%286x-12y=120%2C-32x%2B12y=-328%29

Now add the equations together. You can do this by simply adding the two left sides and the two right sides separately like this:

%286x-12y%29%2B%28-32x%2B12y%29=%28120%29%2B%28-328%29

%286x%2B-32x%29%2B%28-12y%2B12y%29=120%2B-328 Group like terms.

-26x%2B0y=-208 Combine like terms.

-26x=-208 Simplify.

x=%28-208%29%2F%28-26%29 Divide both sides by -26 to isolate x.

x=8 Reduce.

------------------------------------------------------------------

6x-12y=120 Now go back to the first equation.

6%288%29-12y=120 Plug in x=8.

48-12y=120 Multiply.

-12y=120-48 Subtract 48 from both sides.

-12y=72 Combine like terms on the right side.

y=%2872%29%2F%28-12%29 Divide both sides by -12 to isolate y.

y=-6 Reduce.

So the solutions are x=8 and y=-6.

Which form the ordered pair .

This means that the system is consistent and independent.

4x translates in English to "4 times some unknown number" or "4 multiplied by some unknown number"

Example: Say gas is $4 a gallon. If you buy x gallons, then you'll spend 4x (4 times x) dollars. So if you buy 2 gallons, then you'll spend 4*2 = 8 dollars (excluding tax).

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
I'll do the first one to get you started.

%283x%2B2%29%28x%2B7%29 Start with the given expression.

Now let's FOIL the expression.

Remember, when you FOIL an expression, you follow this procedure:

%28highlight%283x%29%2B2%29%28highlight%28x%29%2B7%29 Multiply the First terms:%283%2Ax%29%2A%28x%29=3%2Ax%5E2.

%28highlight%283x%29%2B2%29%28x%2Bhighlight%287%29%29 Multiply the Outer terms:%283%2Ax%29%2A%287%29=21%2Ax.

%283x%2Bhighlight%282%29%29%28highlight%28x%29%2B7%29 Multiply the Inner terms:%282%29%2A%28x%29=2%2Ax.

%283x%2Bhighlight%282%29%29%28x%2Bhighlight%287%29%29 Multiply the Last terms:%282%29%2A%287%29=14.

---------------------------------------------------
So we have the terms: 3%2Ax%5E2, 21%2Ax, 2%2Ax, 14

3%2Ax%5E2%2B21%2Ax%2B2%2Ax%2B14 Now add every term listed above to make a single expression.

3x%5E2%2B23x%2B14 Now combine like terms.

So %283x%2B2%29%28x%2B7%29 FOILs to 3x%5E2%2B23x%2B14.

In other words, %283x%2B2%29%28x%2B7%29=3x%5E2%2B23x%2B14.

Rectangles/637007: Hi Guys - Pretty basic algebraic question here however it would be great if you could provide some assistance.
A rectangle is x cm long and y cm wide. There is a frame around the mirrior, which is m cm wide on all four sides.
Questions:
Write a formula for the area of the mirror and frame.
Is your answer a sum or a product, how do you decide?
How can this be answered?
Thanks,

Answer 401422 by jim_thompson5910(28536) About Me  on 2012-08-13 14:23:35 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!

The length is x. You add m to to each side of this length to get m + x + m = x+2m

So the new length is x+2m cm

Similarly, the old width of y cm becomes y+2m cm

The new area is then...

Area = Length*Width

A = LW

A = (x+2m)(y+2m)

A = xy + 2xm + 2ym + 4m^2

Notice how the second to last line above is a product and the last line is a sum, so either one works.

Add 12 repeatedly until you reach a positive number

-22 + 12 = -10

-10 + 12 = 2

So the answer is 2

Inverses/636935: Find the additive inverse of -9 on the 12-hour clock.

Answer 401323 by jim_thompson5910(28536) About Me  on 2012-08-13 02:16:06 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Add 12 to -9 to get 12+(-9) = 3

So -9 and 3 are the same number on the clock (ie going backwards 9 hours is the same as going forwards 3 hours...you land on 3 each time)

So you must find a number x such that

3 + x = 0

Solve for x:

3 + x = 0

3 + x - 3 = 0 - 3

x = -3

So -3 is the inverse of 3

Add 12 to -3 to get 12+(-3) = 9

This means that 9 is the inverse of -9
-------------------------------------------------------
Useful shortcut:

The additive inverse of 'x' is -x

Ex: x = 6 ---> additive inverse: -x = -6

Ex: x = 7 ---> additive inverse: -x = -7

etc etc

The argument invalid. Draw out the table to get

V W V->W W V
T T T T T
T F F F T
F T T T F
F F T F F

The premises are columns 3 and 4. The conclusion is column 5.

Notice how row 3 has all true premises, but a false conclusion. So this shows us that this argument is invalid.

V W V->W W V
T T T T T
T F F F T
F T T T F
F F T F F

Answer 401247 by jim_thompson5910(28536) About Me  on 2012-08-12 14:18:12 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
From 19x%5E2%2B3x-15 we can see that a=19, b=3, and c=-15

D=b%5E2-4ac Start with the discriminant formula.

D=%283%29%5E2-4%2819%29%28-15%29 Plug in a=19, b=3, and c=-15

D=9-4%2819%29%28-15%29 Square 3 to get 9

D=9--1140 Multiply 4%2819%29%28-15%29 to get %2876%29%28-15%29=-1140

D=9%2B1140 Rewrite D=9--1140 as D=9%2B1140

D=1149 Add 9 to 1140 to get 1149

So the discriminant is D=1149

Since the discriminant is greater than zero, this means that there are two real solutions.

Answer 401032 by jim_thompson5910(28536) About Me  on 2012-08-10 23:14:54 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
In the "first three hours, you drive 50 mph", so you've driven 3*50 = 150 miles so far

You need to travel the remaining 300 - 150 = 150 miles at 65 mph

So this will take you about 150/65 = 2.30769 hours

Hint: the equation for train A is y = 32x where x is the time and y is the distance traveled. The equation for train B is y = 52(x-2) where again x is the time and y is the distance traveled

The two will meet when the two distances are the same. So solve 32x = 52(x-2) for x to find your answer.
