Equations/146587: Soybean meal is 16% protein; cornmela is 8% protein. How many pounds of each should be mixed together in order to get 320-lb mixture that is 14% protein?
How many pounds of the cornmeal should be in the mixture?
How many pounds of the soybean should be in the mixture? 1 solutions
Answer 107036 by jim_thompson5910(28598) on 2008-06-27 12:49:51 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!let x= # of pounds of soybean meal and y=# of pounds of cornmeal
Since we want a 320 mixture, this means that we have the first equation:
Also, because we want a "320-lb mixture that is 14% protein" from the mixture of
soybean meal that is 16% protein and "cornmeal that is 8% protein, we have the second equation:
 Multiply
Multiply both sides by 10 to remove the decimals
 Distribute
So we have the new system of equations:
 Start with the first equation
 Subtract from both sides
 Rearrange the equation
---------------------
Since , we can now replace each in the second equation with to solve for
Plug in into the first equation. In other words, replace each with . Notice we've eliminated the variables. So we now have a simple equation with one unknown.
 Distribute to
 Multiply
Combine like terms on the left side
 Subtract 2560 from both sides
Combine like terms on the right side
Divide both sides by 8 to isolate x
 Divide
-----------------First Answer------------------------------
So the first part of our answer is:
Since we know that we can plug it into the equation (remember we previously solved for in the first equation).
Start with the equation where was previously isolated.
 Plug in
 Multiply
 Combine like terms
-----------------Second Answer------------------------------
So the second part of our answer is:
-----------------Summary------------------------------
So our answers are:
 and
which form the ordered pair
So there are 240 pounds of Soybean meal and 80 pounds of cornmeal

Well if you try to square the expression, you'll get a totally new expression (ie one that is not equivalent to the original). So this means that you cannot square the expression. In fact, you cannot do anything to . So I would say that is equivalent to E. None of these

You can put this solution on YOUR website!I'm afraid that the previous solution is completely off. The equation "3x^2 - 4" is NOT linear.
f (0) = -4 tells us that when x=0, then y=-4. So the line goes through the point (0,-4)
f (2) = 8 tells us that when x=2, then y=8. So the line goes through the point (2,8)
So let's find the equation of the line that goes through the points (0,-4) and (2,8)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!Anytime you want to graph an equation, you NEED to solve for "y" first. So for problems g, h, i, and j, you need to solve for y
I'll do the first 3 to get you started.
a)
Looking at we can see that the equation is in slope-intercept form where the slope is and the y-intercept is
Since this tells us that the y-intercept is ) .Remember the y-intercept is the point where the graph intersects with the y-axis
So we have one point
Now since the slope is comprised of the "rise" over the "run" this means
Also, because the slope is , this means:
which shows us that the rise is 3 and the run is 1. This means that to go from point to point, we can go up 3 and over 1
So starting at ) , go up 3 units
and to the right 1 unit to get to the next point
Now draw a line through these points to graph
So this is the graph of through the points ) and
b)
Looking at we can see that the equation is in slope-intercept form where the slope is and the y-intercept is note: really looks like
Since this tells us that the y-intercept is ) .Remember the y-intercept is the point where the graph intersects with the y-axis
So we have one point
Now since the slope is comprised of the "rise" over the "run" this means
Also, because the slope is , this means:
which shows us that the rise is -1 and the run is 1. This means that to go from point to point, we can go down 1 and over 1
So starting at ) , go down 1 unit
and to the right 1 unit to get to the next point
Now draw a line through these points to graph
So this is the graph of through the points ) and
c)
Looking at we can see that the equation is in slope-intercept form where the slope is and the y-intercept is
Since this tells us that the y-intercept is ) .Remember the y-intercept is the point where the graph intersects with the y-axis
So we have one point
Now since the slope is comprised of the "rise" over the "run" this means
Also, because the slope is , this means:
which shows us that the rise is 1 and the run is 2. This means that to go from point to point, we can go up 1 and over 2
So starting at ) , go up 1 unit
and to the right 2 units to get to the next point
Now draw a line through these points to graph
So this is the graph of through the points ) and

You can put this solution on YOUR website!Start with the given system of equations:
Multiply the both sides of the first equation by the LCD 5.
 Distribute and multiply.
Now multiply the both sides of the first equation by -2.
 Distribute and multiply.
So we have the new system of equations:
Now add the equations together. You can do this by simply adding the two left sides and the two right sides separately like this:
 Group like terms.
Combine like terms. Notice how the x terms cancel out.
 Simplify.
Divide both sides by to isolate .
 Reduce.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Now go back to the first equation.
 Plug in .
 Multiply.
 Subtract from both sides.
Combine like terms on the right side.
Divide both sides by to isolate .
 Reduce.
So our answer is and .
Which form the ordered pair ) .
This means that the two equations are consistent and independent.
Notice when we graph the equations, we see that they intersect at ) . So this visually verifies our answer.
