Looking at y=-3x%2B7 we can see that the equation is in slope-intercept form y=mx%2Bb where the slope is m=-3 and the y-intercept is b=7

Since b=7 this tells us that the y-intercept is .Remember the y-intercept is the point where the graph intersects with the y-axis

So we have one point

Now since the slope is comprised of the "rise" over the "run" this means
slope=rise%2Frun

Also, because the slope is -3, this means:

rise%2Frun=-3%2F1

which shows us that the rise is -3 and the run is 1. This means that to go from point to point, we can go down 3 and over 1

So starting at , go down 3 units

and to the right 1 unit to get to the next point

Now draw a line through these points to graph y=-3x%2B7

So this is the graph of y=-3x%2B7 through the points and

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

5x-2y=3 Start with the given equation.

-2y=3-5x Subtract 5x from both sides.

-2y=-5x%2B3 Rearrange the terms.

y=%28-5x%2B3%29%2F%28-2%29 Divide both sides by -2 to isolate y.

y=%28%28-5%29%2F%28-2%29%29x%2B%283%29%2F%28-2%29 Break up the fraction.

y=%285%2F2%29x-3%2F2 Reduce.

So the equation y=%285%2F2%29x-3%2F2 is now in slope intercept form y=mx%2Bb where the slope is m=5%2F2 and the y-intercept is b=-3%2F2 note: the y-intercept is the point

x%5E2-3x=7x-2 Start with the given equation.

x%5E2-3x-7x%2B2=0 Subtract 7x from both sides. Add 2 to both sides.

x%5E2-10x%2B2=0 Combine like terms.

Notice we have a quadratic equation in the form of ax%5E2%2Bbx%2Bc where a=1, b=-10, and c=2

Let's use the quadratic formula to solve for x

x+=+%28-b+%2B-+sqrt%28+b%5E2-4ac+%29%29%2F%282a%29 Start with the quadratic formula

x+=+%28-%28-10%29+%2B-+sqrt%28+%28-10%29%5E2-4%281%29%282%29+%29%29%2F%282%281%29%29 Plug in a=1, b=-10, and c=2

x+=+%2810+%2B-+sqrt%28+%28-10%29%5E2-4%281%29%282%29+%29%29%2F%282%281%29%29 Negate -10 to get 10.

x+=+%2810+%2B-+sqrt%28+100-4%281%29%282%29+%29%29%2F%282%281%29%29 Square -10 to get 100.

x+=+%2810+%2B-+sqrt%28+100-8+%29%29%2F%282%281%29%29 Multiply 4%281%29%282%29 to get 8

x+=+%2810+%2B-+sqrt%28+92+%29%29%2F%282%281%29%29 Subtract 8 from 100 to get 92

x+=+%2810+%2B-+sqrt%28+92+%29%29%2F%282%29 Multiply 2 and 1 to get 2.

x+=+%2810+%2B-+2%2Asqrt%2823%29%29%2F%282%29 Simplify the square root (note: If you need help with simplifying square roots, check out this solver)

x+=+%2810%29%2F%282%29+%2B-+%282%2Asqrt%2823%29%29%2F%282%29 Break up the fraction.

x+=+5+%2B-+sqrt%2823%29 Reduce.

x+=+5%2Bsqrt%2823%29 or x+=+5-sqrt%2823%29 Break up the expression.

So the solutions are x+=+5%2Bsqrt%2823%29 or x+=+5-sqrt%2823%29

Cost (without tax) = 14.50 + 23.95 = 38.45

Tax = 0.04 * 38.45 = 1.54

Total Cost (with tax) = 38.45 + 1.54 = 39.99

So you have enough money

Since the candle starts at 8 inches, this means that the constant is b=8. Also, because the candle burns at a rate of 1.5 inches per hour, this means that the slope is m=-1.5 (note: the rate is negative since the length of the candle is decreasing). So the equation that models the candle is

Rate-of-work-word-problems/152882: A man can construct a wall in 20 hrs. With the help of his apprentice assistant the task would take 12 hrs. How long would it take the apprentice, working alone, to construct the wall?

Answer 112349 by jim_thompson5910(28711) About Me  on 2008-08-21 13:11:53 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x=# of hours apprentice can complete the job

W=RT Start with the work done formula.

Since the "man can construct a wall in 20 hrs", this means that T=20

1=R%2820%29 Plug in W=1 (for 1 job) and T=20

1%2F20=R Divide both sides by 20.

So the man's rate is 1%2F20 of a wall per hour

W=RT Go back to the first formula

1=Rx Plug in W=1 and T=x

1%2Fx=R Divide both sides by x.

So the apprentice's rate is 1%2Fx of a wall per hour

Now add the two rates to get R=1%2F20%2B1%2Fx=x%2F%2820x%29%2B20%2F%2820x%29=%28x%2B20%29%2F%2820x%29

So together, their rate is R=%28x%2B20%29%2F%2820x%29

W=RT Go back to the first formula

1=%28%28x%2B20%29%2F%2820x%29%29%2812%29 Plug in W=1, R=%28x%2B20%29%2F%2820x%29, and T=12 (this is the time for them if they work together)

20x=12%28x%2B20%29 Multiply both sides by 20x.

20x=12x%2B240 Distribute

20x-12x=240 Subtract 12x from both sides.

8x=240 Combine like terms on the left side.

x=%28240%29%2F%288%29 Divide both sides by 8 to isolate x.

x=30 Reduce.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Answer:

So the answer is x=30 which means that it'll take 30 hours for the apprentice to do it alone.

1 solutions

Answer 112304 by jim_thompson5910(28711) About Me  on 2008-08-20 23:41:19 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!

5y%5E2-25y%2B60 Start with the given expression.

5%28y%5E2-5y%2B12%29 Factor out the y%5E2 coefficient 5. This step is very important: the y%5E2 coefficient must be equal to 1.

Take half of the y coefficient -5 to get -5%2F2. In other words, %281%2F2%29%28-5%29=-5%2F2.

Now square -5%2F2 to get 25%2F4. In other words, %28-5%2F2%29%5E2=%28-5%2F2%29%28-5%2F2%29=25%2F4

5%28y%5E2-5y%2Bhighlight%2825%2F4-25%2F4%29%2B12%29 Now add and subtract 25%2F4 inside the parenthesis. Make sure to place this after the "y" term. Notice how 25%2F4-25%2F4=0. So the expression is not changed.

5%28%28y%5E2-5y%2B25%2F4%29-25%2F4%2B12%29 Group the first three terms.

5%28%28y-5%2F2%29%5E2-25%2F4%2B12%29 Factor y%5E2-5y%2B25%2F4 to get %28y-5%2F2%29%5E2.

5%28%28y-5%2F2%29%5E2%2B23%2F4%29 Combine like terms.

5%28y-5%2F2%29%5E2%2B5%2823%2F4%29 Distribute.

5%28y-5%2F2%29%5E2%2B115%2F4 Multiply.

So after completing the square, 5y%5E2-25y%2B60 transforms to 5%28y-5%2F2%29%5E2%2B115%2F4. So 5y%5E2-25y%2B60=5%28y-5%2F2%29%5E2%2B115%2F4.

So x=5y%5E2-25y%2B60 is equivalent to x=5%28y-5%2F2%29%5E2%2B115%2F4.

This means that the equation x=5%28y-5%2F2%29%5E2%2B115%2F4 is in the form x=a%28y-k%29%5E2%2Bh where a=5, h=5%2F2, and k=115%2F4

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

3x%5E2-6x%2B3=0 Start with the given equation.

Notice we have a quadratic equation in the form of ax%5E2%2Bbx%2Bc where a=3, b=-6, and c=3

Let's use the quadratic formula to solve for x

x+=+%28-b+%2B-+sqrt%28+b%5E2-4ac+%29%29%2F%282a%29 Start with the quadratic formula

x+=+%28-%28-6%29+%2B-+sqrt%28+%28-6%29%5E2-4%283%29%283%29+%29%29%2F%282%283%29%29 Plug in a=3, b=-6, and c=3

x+=+%286+%2B-+sqrt%28+%28-6%29%5E2-4%283%29%283%29+%29%29%2F%282%283%29%29 Negate -6 to get 6.

x+=+%286+%2B-+sqrt%28+36-4%283%29%283%29+%29%29%2F%282%283%29%29 Square -6 to get 36.

x+=+%286+%2B-+sqrt%28+36-36+%29%29%2F%282%283%29%29 Multiply 4%283%29%283%29 to get 36

x+=+%286+%2B-+sqrt%28+0+%29%29%2F%282%283%29%29 Subtract 36 from 36 to get 0

x+=+%286+%2B-+sqrt%28+0+%29%29%2F%286%29 Multiply 2 and 3 to get 6.

x+=+%286+%2B-+0%29%2F%286%29 Take the square root of 0 to get 0.

x+=+%286+%2B+0%29%2F%286%29 or x+=+%286+-+0%29%2F%286%29 Break up the expression.

x+=+%286%29%2F%286%29 or x+=++%286%29%2F%286%29 Combine like terms.

x+=+1 or x+=+1 Simplify.

So the only solution is x+=+1
