Finance/219555: what interest rate is required for an investment with continuously compounded interest to double in 6 years 1 solutions
Answer 165077 by jim_thompson5910(28595) on 2009-09-30 13:20:28 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Start with the continuous compounding interest formula.
 Plug in , , and .
 Rearrange the terms.
 Divide both sides by .
 Divide to get .
Take the natural log of both sides.
Pull down the exponent using the identity .
 Evaluate to get .
 Multiply.
 Evaluate to get
Divide both sides by to isolate 'r'
 Divide to get
 Rearrange the equation.
 Round to the nearest ten-thousandth.
So an interest rate of about 11.55% (don't forget to multiply by 100 to convert the decimal to a percent) will make the initial investment of $250 grow to $500 in 6 years.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Are all linear equations functions? No. Here's an example:
Ex: The equation x=5 is linear (since it graphs a straight line) but it is a vertical line. So it fails the vertical line test which means that x=5 is NOT a function.

When Lyle goes to the grocery store, he always leaves with 4, 5, or 6 bags of groceries. Each bag always weighs between 1 and 7 pounds. What is the difference between Lyle’s heaviest possible grocery purchase and his lightest possible grocery purchase?
The answer I got is 42...I know it's incorrect...help. 1 solutions
Answer 165060 by jim_thompson5910(28595) on 2009-09-30 12:28:26 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Worst Case (ie heaviest load): He leaves with 6 bags (the most he carries) that are 7 pounds each (the heaviest they get). How much do they weigh total? They weigh pounds total.
Now compare this to the best case...
Best Case (lightest load possible): He leaves with 4 bags (the smallest amount he carries) weighing 1 pound each (the lightest they get). In total, they weigh 4*1=4 pounds.
The difference between the heaviest and the lightest is then: 42-4=38
So the difference between Lyle’s heaviest possible grocery purchase and his lightest possible grocery purchase is 38 pounds.

Money_Word_Problems/219513: Peter borrowed $12,000, which he paid back after 4 years at a simple interest rate of 8%. Find the total amount that Peter paid back. 1 solutions
Answer 165059 by jim_thompson5910(28595) on 2009-09-30 12:22:24 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Recall that the simple interest formula is where 'I' is the interest, P is the balance/principal, 'r' is the interest rate, and 't' is the time in years.
So let's first find out how much interest he paid:
 Start with the given formula.
 Plug in , , and
 Multiply
So he paid $3,840 in interest alone.
Now just add this to the amount he borrowed (since he has to pay that back too) to get:
So Peter paid back $15,840 total.

Answer 165053 by jim_thompson5910(28595) on 2009-09-30 11:53:44 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!I'll do the first one to get you started.
Looking at we can see that the first term is and the last term is where the coefficients are 1 and -12 respectively.
Now multiply the first coefficient 1 and the last coefficient -12 to get -12. Now what two numbers multiply to -12 and add to the middle coefficient -4? Let's list all of the factors of -12:
Factors of -12:
1,2,3,4,6,12
-1,-2,-3,-4,-6,-12 ...List the negative factors as well. This will allow us to find all possible combinations
These factors pair up and multiply to -12
(1)*(-12)
(2)*(-6)
(3)*(-4)
(-1)*(12)
(-2)*(6)
(-3)*(4)
note: remember, the product of a negative and a positive number is a negative number
Now which of these pairs add to -4? Lets make a table of all of the pairs of factors we multiplied and see which two numbers add to -4
| First Number | Second Number | Sum | | 1 | -12 | 1+(-12)=-11 | | 2 | -6 | 2+(-6)=-4 | | 3 | -4 | 3+(-4)=-1 | | -1 | 12 | -1+12=11 | | -2 | 6 | -2+6=4 | | -3 | 4 | -3+4=1 |
From this list we can see that 2 and -6 add up to -4 and multiply to -12
Now looking at the expression , replace with (notice combines back to . So it is equivalent to )
Now let's factor by grouping:
 Group like terms
Factor out the GCF of out of the first group. Factor out the GCF of out of the second group
Since we have a common term of , we can combine like terms
So factors to
So this also means that factors to (since is equivalent to )

Money_Word_Problems/219496: How long does it take your money in your savings account to double at 8% interest rate using the formula A=Pe^rt ? 1 solutions
Answer 165051 by jim_thompson5910(28595) on 2009-09-30 11:44:34 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Start with the continuous compounding interest formula.
Plug in (since we want to double our investment), and (note: 0.08 is the decimal equivalent of 8%).
 Divide both sides by .
 Reduce.
Take the natural log of both sides.
Pull down the exponent using the identity .
 Evaluate to get .
 Multiply.
 Evaluate to get
Divide both sides by to isolate 't'
 Divide to get
 Rearrange the equation.
 Round to the nearest hundredth.
So it will take about 8.66 years for an initial investment to double if it is compounded continuously at an interest rate of 8%.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!Example: The amount in wages that you make varies directly to the number of hours that you work. In other words, if you work more, you earn more (or if you work less, you earn less).
In this example, we have two variables: amount made in wages and number of hours worked.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!I'm assuming that both of these angles are the acute angles. If so, then these angles are complementary. This means that they add to 90 degrees. In other words,
Simply solve the equation above to find 'x' which will then give you your angles.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!I'm assuming you want to solve for 'y' right?
 Start with the given equation.
 Subtract from both sides.
 Rearrange the terms.
Divide both sides by to isolate y.
 Break up the fraction.
 Reduce.
So the equation is now in slope intercept form where the slope is and the y-intercept is note: the y-intercept is the point
