Length-and-distance/356942: find cd and ef then determine if cd is congruent to ef
d is (-2,4)
c is (-5,0)
e is (2,2)
f is (5,-2
1 solutions

Answer 254888 by jim_thompson5910(28595) About Me  on 2010-10-15 20:12:48 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
First, we need to find the length of cd. So we need to find the distance between (-5,0) and (-2,4).

Note: is the first point . So this means that x%5B1%5D=-5 and y%5B1%5D=0.
Also, is the second point . So this means that x%5B2%5D=-2 and y%5B2%5D=4.

d=sqrt%28%28x%5B1%5D-x%5B2%5D%29%5E2%2B%28y%5B1%5D-y%5B2%5D%29%5E2%29 Start with the distance formula.

d=sqrt%28%28-5--2%29%5E2%2B%280-4%29%5E2%29 Plug in x%5B1%5D=-5, x%5B2%5D=-2, y%5B1%5D=0, and y%5B2%5D=4.

d=sqrt%28%28-3%29%5E2%2B%280-4%29%5E2%29 Subtract -2 from -5 to get -3.

d=sqrt%28%28-3%29%5E2%2B%28-4%29%5E2%29 Subtract 4 from 0 to get -4.

d=sqrt%289%2B%28-4%29%5E2%29 Square -3 to get 9.

d=sqrt%289%2B16%29 Square -4 to get 16.

d=sqrt%2825%29 Add 9 to 16 to get 25.

d=5 Take the square root of 25 to get 5.

So our answer is d=5

So the distance between the two points is 5 units.

So the length of cd is 5 units.

-------------------------------------

Now we need to find the length of ef. So we need to find the distance between the points (2,2) and (5,-2)

Note: is the first point . So this means that x%5B1%5D=2 and y%5B1%5D=2.
Also, is the second point . So this means that x%5B2%5D=5 and y%5B2%5D=-2.

d=sqrt%28%28x%5B1%5D-x%5B2%5D%29%5E2%2B%28y%5B1%5D-y%5B2%5D%29%5E2%29 Start with the distance formula.

d=sqrt%28%282-5%29%5E2%2B%282--2%29%5E2%29 Plug in x%5B1%5D=2, x%5B2%5D=5, y%5B1%5D=2, and y%5B2%5D=-2.

d=sqrt%28%28-3%29%5E2%2B%282--2%29%5E2%29 Subtract 5 from 2 to get -3.

d=sqrt%28%28-3%29%5E2%2B%284%29%5E2%29 Subtract -2 from 2 to get 4.

d=sqrt%289%2B%284%29%5E2%29 Square -3 to get 9.

d=sqrt%289%2B16%29 Square 4 to get 16.

d=sqrt%2825%29 Add 9 to 16 to get 25.

d=5 Take the square root of 25 to get 5.

So our answer is d=5

So the distance between the two points is also 5 units.

So the length of ef is also 5 units.

This means that cd and ef are congruent (since they are the same length).

Also, is the second point . So this means that x%5B2%5D=-5 and y%5B2%5D=1.

d=sqrt%28%28x%5B1%5D-x%5B2%5D%29%5E2%2B%28y%5B1%5D-y%5B2%5D%29%5E2%29 Start with the distance formula.

d=sqrt%28%288%29%5E2%2B%28-5-1%29%5E2%29 Subtract -5 from 3 to get 8.

d=sqrt%28%288%29%5E2%2B%28-6%29%5E2%29 Subtract 1 from -5 to get -6.

d=sqrt%2864%2B%28-6%29%5E2%29 Square 8 to get 64.

d=sqrt%2864%2B36%29 Square -6 to get 36.

d=sqrt%28100%29 Add 64 to 36 to get 100.

d=10 Take the square root of 100 to get 10.

So our answer is d=10

So the distance between the two points is 10 units.

Graphs/356931: I have a couple questions I have no idea how to answer. I hope this gets to you today, I'm already late with the assignment. I'm taking Elementary Algebra with The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, I'm going for a Bachelor's degree in digital photography; I really doubt that I will have to use these skills in my career choice but nonetheless I still have to answer them and understand them. The questions I'm having trouble with are graphing these equations,
1. Y = 2x – 8
2. 5x – 5 = 3x – y
3. Y = IxI – 5
4. 3x + 4 = 4x – 6
The number's of order are not accurate for the assignment, but the equations themselves are. I don't understand what it is I should do to find the answer. Please help!

The truth is that you never know what you're going to need in the future (otherwise, you'd probably just stick to making money as a psychic). So it helps to learn everything you can. You don't have to know everything, but it helps to get that exposure.

I'll do the first two to get you started. Please post these one at a time next time.

Looking at y=2x-8 we can see that the equation is in slope-intercept form y=mx%2Bb where the slope is m=2 and the y-intercept is b=-8

Since b=-8 this tells us that the y-intercept is .Remember the y-intercept is the point where the graph intersects with the y-axis

So we have one point

Now since the slope is comprised of the "rise" over the "run" this means
slope=rise%2Frun

Also, because the slope is 2, this means:

rise%2Frun=2%2F1

which shows us that the rise is 2 and the run is 1. This means that to go from point to point, we can go up 2 and over 1

So starting at , go up 2 units

and to the right 1 unit to get to the next point

Now draw a line through these points to graph y=2x-8

So this is the graph of y=2x-8 through the points and

5x+-+5+=+3x+-+y Start with the given equation.

5x+-+5+-+3x+=+-+y Subtract 3x from both sides.

2x+-+5+=+-+y Combine like terms.

-2x+%2B+5+=++y Multiply every term by -1 to isolate y.

y=-2x%2B5 Rearrange the equation.

Looking at y=-2x%2B5 we can see that the equation is in slope-intercept form y=mx%2Bb where the slope is m=-2 and the y-intercept is b=5

3x%2By=-6 Start with the given equation.

y=-6-3x Subtract 3x from both sides.

y=-3x-6 Rearrange the terms.

So the equation y=-3x-6 is now in slope intercept form y=mx%2Bb where the slope is m=-3 and the y-intercept is b=+-6 note: the y-intercept is the point

Triangles/356561: how do I turn 0.75 degrees in minutes and seconds

Answer 254511 by jim_thompson5910(28595) About Me  on 2010-10-14 19:37:40 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Converting from degrees to minutes: Multiply 0.75 by 60 to get 0.75%2A60+=+45 minutes.

Since the decimal portion of 45 minutes is 0, this means that the amount of seconds is 0.

So 0.75 degrees is equal to 45 minutes 0 seconds

Since you can plug in ANY number you want for x (including zero), this means that the domain is the set of all real numbers.

It turns out that x%5E2 is NEVER negative. So the range of x%5E2 is y%3E=0. So just add 1 to get the range of f(x) which is f%28x%29%3E=1

So summarize:

Range: f%28x%29%3E=1. In other words, the range is the set of numbers such that they are greater than or equal to 1. Written as [) in interval notation.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Looking at the graph below

The graph of the line passes through the points and . So let's find the equation of the line through these points.

First let's find the slope of the line through the points and

Note: is the first point . So this means that x%5B1%5D=0 and y%5B1%5D=-4.
Also, is the second point . So this means that x%5B2%5D=3 and y%5B2%5D=0.

m=%28y%5B2%5D-y%5B1%5D%29%2F%28x%5B2%5D-x%5B1%5D%29 Start with the slope formula.

m=%280--4%29%2F%283-0%29 Plug in y%5B2%5D=0, y%5B1%5D=-4, x%5B2%5D=3, and x%5B1%5D=0

m=%284%29%2F%283-0%29 Subtract -4 from 0 to get 4

m=%284%29%2F%283%29 Subtract 0 from 3 to get 3

So the slope of the line that goes through the points and is m=4%2F3

Now let's use the point slope formula:

y-y%5B1%5D=m%28x-x%5B1%5D%29 Start with the point slope formula

y--4=%284%2F3%29%28x-0%29 Plug in m=4%2F3, x%5B1%5D=0, and y%5B1%5D=-4

y%2B4=%284%2F3%29%28x-0%29 Rewrite y--4 as y%2B4

y%2B4=%284%2F3%29x%2B%284%2F3%29%28-0%29 Distribute

y%2B4=%284%2F3%29x%2B0 Multiply

y=%284%2F3%29x%2B0-4 Subtract 4 from both sides.

y=%284%2F3%29x-4 Combine like terms.

So the equation that goes through the points and is y=%284%2F3%29x-4

x%5E2-6x-10=0 Start with the given equation.

Notice that the quadratic x%5E2-6x-10 is in the form of Ax%5E2%2BBx%2BC where A=1, B=-6, and C=-10

Let's use the quadratic formula to solve for "x":

x+=+%28-B+%2B-+sqrt%28+B%5E2-4AC+%29%29%2F%282A%29 Start with the quadratic formula

x+=+%28-%28-6%29+%2B-+sqrt%28+%28-6%29%5E2-4%281%29%28-10%29+%29%29%2F%282%281%29%29 Plug in A=1, B=-6, and C=-10

x+=+%286+%2B-+sqrt%28+%28-6%29%5E2-4%281%29%28-10%29+%29%29%2F%282%281%29%29 Negate -6 to get 6.

x+=+%286+%2B-+sqrt%28+36-4%281%29%28-10%29+%29%29%2F%282%281%29%29 Square -6 to get 36.

x+=+%286+%2B-+sqrt%28+36--40+%29%29%2F%282%281%29%29 Multiply 4%281%29%28-10%29 to get -40

x+=+%286+%2B-+sqrt%28+36%2B40+%29%29%2F%282%281%29%29 Rewrite sqrt%2836--40%29 as sqrt%2836%2B40%29

x+=+%286+%2B-+sqrt%28+76+%29%29%2F%282%281%29%29 Add 36 to 40 to get 76

x+=+%286+%2B-+sqrt%28+76+%29%29%2F%282%29 Multiply 2 and 1 to get 2.

x+=+%286+%2B-+2%2Asqrt%2819%29%29%2F%282%29 Simplify the square root (note: If you need help with simplifying square roots, check out this solver)

x+=+%286%29%2F%282%29+%2B-+%282%2Asqrt%2819%29%29%2F%282%29 Break up the fraction.

x+=+3+%2B-+sqrt%2819%29 Reduce.
