Michael sees mile marker 237 when he enters the highway and mile marker 159 when he exits, how far did he travel? He travelled 78 miles.
We are not allowed to use the example of mile markers. 1 solutions
Answer 275670 by jim_thompson5910(28476) on 2010-12-28 18:27:42 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! How about this: Michael sees a sign that reads "Town A: 150 miles" (ie the distance he is from Town A is 150 miles) and a few hours later he comes upon another sign that reads "Town A: 72 miles". How far has he traveled?
Simply subtract the two figures to get 150-72 = 78. So he has traveled 78 miles. Of course, you can change the numbers to make the distance a different number. For instance, the two numbers could be 200 and 143 giving you a distance of 200-143=57 miles.

Answer 275279 by jim_thompson5910(28476) on 2010-12-27 00:22:39 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Start with the area of a circle formula.
 Divide both sides by .
Take the square root of both sides to isolate "r" (note: we're only taking the positive square root since a negative radius doesn't make sense)
 Flip the equation.
 Plug in .
Replace with (note: Use more digits of to get better accuracy).
 Divide (this figure is approximate).
Take the square root of to get (again, this is approximate).
 Round to the nearest foot.
Since the radius is , the diameter is feet.
So the diameter of the arena is about 680 feet.

test/388752: Ok! Hers my situation. I'm 50 years old. I have known algebra. I made a commitment with myself to enroll in a University full time to accomplish a double major. (1). (BS) Mathematics (3yrs.) & (2). (BS) Civil Engineering (2yrs.).
Now ! my question is this I would say I am at a elementary math level (pre-algebra). My primary goal is to reach a calculus for engineering level. What is the most direct route without skipping any steps of course map should I take and what format should I use? DVD's with practice sheets, online tutor, interactive structured tutor session's ect.,? I start this Spring semester January, 24, 2011 1 solutions
Answer 275128 by jim_thompson5910(28476) on 2010-12-24 21:38:35 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! The basic order would be
1) Pre-Algebra
2) Algebra 1
3) Algebra 2 (you may be able to combine the two algebra classes, but it's not advised)
4) Geometry (this may be optional)
5) Pre-Calculus
6) Calculus (there are various levels of calculus)
This is the basic route that I've gone through and countless others I know have gone through. It may vary depending on the school.
The most effective way to learn all of this would be to go one-on-one with someone so you can talk about what you're learning. If you can't do that, interactive software would be your best bet. Of course, the classroom is also a good place to learn as well.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! The expression is ALWAYS positive. Also, is ALWAYS positive.
Because of this, this means that BOTH and must be values less than 1. However, if x is an integer, this would mean that x must be zero (because any other integer would make ). So this leaves the equation . I'll let you solve it.
Alternatively, we can let (using the same reasoning as above), which would leave us . Again, I'll let you solve it.

Travel_Word_Problems/388682: One car's headed south at 70mph. The other is headed north at 65mph. They leave from the exact same place. How long will it take the cars to get 270 miles apart? 1 solutions
Answer 275053 by jim_thompson5910(28476) on 2010-12-24 00:33:58 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Using , the first car has traveled miles (where 'x' is the time spent traveling) and the second car has traveled miles.
Since we want the two to be 270 miles apart, this means that their individual distances must add to 270
So
 Start with the given equation.
Combine like terms on the left side.
Divide both sides by to isolate .
 Reduce.

Expressions-with-variables/388674: I need your help to write a formula for this question:
A single taxpayer uses a tax rate schedule to calculate the amount of tax to pay on a federal income tax return. If the tax payer has an adjusted income over $23,350, then the taxpayer must pay $3,502 plus 28% of any amount over $23,350. If the amount of adjusted income written as A and the tax if T, write the formula to find the tax.
Thank you for your help I really appreciate it! 1 solutions
Answer 275037 by jim_thompson5910(28476) on 2010-12-23 19:38:54 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Let's assume that the adjusted income is over $23,350
So because of this assumption, this means that "the taxpayer must pay $3,502 plus 28% of any amount over $23,350". What this means is that the tax payer is guaranteed to pay $3,502. So this means that the tax so far is . Then the payer is expected to pay 28% of what's over $23,350. So you must add because is the "amount over $23,350" and 0.28 is the decimal form of 28%
So the tax formula is
Ex: Say that the payer earns $25,000. This means that s/he will pay dollars in taxes.

Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/388670: bruce needs 30 five-foot pieces of rope for a school project. the hardware store sells rope by the yard. how many yards of rope will bruce need 1 solutions
Answer 275031 by jim_thompson5910(28476) on 2010-12-23 18:36:42 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Since "bruce needs 30 five-foot ", this means that he needs feet of rope total.
Now recall that 3 ft = 1 yard. Now multiply both sides by 50 to get
3*50 ft = 1* 50 yd
150 ft = 50 yd
So this means that he needs 50 yards of rope.
Note: alternatively, you can divide 150 by 3 to convert from feet to yards.

Answer 275029 by jim_thompson5910(28476) on 2010-12-23 18:18:26 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! The perimeter for a rectangle is where L is the length and W is the width. Since "A rectangle is to be drawn with perimeter 64cm", we know that P=64, which means that
Also since "the length is to be 14cm more than the width", we can say that
So plug this into to get
 Distribute.
Combine like terms on the left side.
 Subtract from both sides.
Combine like terms on the right side.
Divide both sides by to isolate .
 Reduce.
Since and , this means that
So
So the length is 23 and the width is 9. This means that the area is
So the area is 207 square cm.
