1. The sum of 5 and a number is three. Find the number.
Ans: Let x be that no.
hence x+5=3
Implies x=3-5=-2
x=-2
2. The difference between five and twice a number is one. Find the number.
Let that no.be x
5-2x=1
2x=5-1
2x=4
x=2
3. Four times the sum of twice a number and three is twelve. Find the number.
4(2x+3)=12
2x+3=12/3=4
2x=4-3=1
2x=1
x=1/2
4.Twice the difference between a number and twenty-five is three times the number. Find the number
2(x-25)=3x
2x-50=3x
x=-50
5. The sum of two numbers is twenty. Three times the smaller is equal to twice the larger. Find the number.
x+y=20 ------ (1)
3x=2y i.e, 3x-2y=0 ------ (2)
(1)*2 implies 2x+2y=40 ------- (3)
(2)+(3) implies 5x=40
x=8 & 8+y=20
x=8 & y=12
6. A 14-yard fishing line is cut into two pieces. Three times the length of the longer piece is four times the length of the shorter piece. Find the length of each piece

(1)*4 implies
4x+4y=56
3x-4y=0

You can put this solution on YOUR website!Area of the sail = x^2+5x+6
Height = x+3
Area of the triangle = 1/2 * base * height
x^2+5x+6 = 1/2 * base * x+3
Base = 2(x^2+5x+6)/(x+3)
= 2(x+2)(x+3)/(x+3)
= 2(x+2)

Let x be the length of one side.Therefore the other side's length is x+2. Given diagonal=10m.Therefore
10^2=x^2+(x+2)^2
100=2x^2+4x+4
2x^2+4x-96=0
x^2+2x-48=0
(x-6)(x+8)=0
x-6=0,x+8=0
x=6,x=-8
x=-8 is absurd.Therefore x=6
hence the lengths are 6m & 8m

With Slope -2/5 Through (2,-3)
x-2=-2/5(y+3)
5x-10=-2y-6

6x^2 - 5x = 50 ----------- (1)
2x^2+5x-12=0 ----------- (2)
(1)+ (2) implies
8x^2-12=50
8x^2=62
x^2=62/8=31/4
x^2=31/4
x=5.1/2
