Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/34337: A mixture of 30 lbs. of candy sells for $1.10 a pound. The mixture consists of chocolates worth $1.50 a pound and chocolates worth 90¢ a pound. How many pounds of each kind were used to make the mixture?
1 solutions

Answer 20617 by fanism(39) About Me  on 2006-04-20 11:49:15 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let x be the chocolates worth $1.50 a pound
and let y be the chocolates worth 90¢ a pound.
1.5x + 0.9y = 30(1.1) -- eq1
x + y = 30 --> x = 30 - y -- eq2
sub eq2 into eq1, u get
1.5(30-y) + 0.9y = 33
12 = 0.6y
y = 20
put back into eq2,
x + 20 = 30
x = 10

Probability-and-statistics/34262: If you roll a standard pair of dice, what is the probability you will roll the sume of 10?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
i think this is the approach,
to get a sum of 10, the results have to be
first = 4, second = 6
first = 5, second = 5
first = 6, and second = 4
to roll a 4 out of a dice, the probability is 1/6,
and so do getting a 5, or 6.
that means,
%281%2F6%29%2A%281%2F6%29+%2B+%281%2F6%29%2A%281%2F6%29+%2B+%281%2F6%29%2A%281%2F6%29+

Equations/34273: HI - I can't seem to figure this one out:
The current cost of an item is $837, which is a 37% increase over the prior year's cost. What was the prior year's cost? I set up an equation:
(C+(C*37%)=837)
But, can't get the correct answer. By doing a guess and check, i know the answer is $610.95, but can't get there algebraically. HELP! And thanks!

sqrt%286%29+%2A+%28sqrt%2810%29+%2B+sqrt%2815%29%29+
sqrt%286%29 can be written as sqrt%282%29%2Asqrt%283%29
and so do
sqrt%2810%29 = sqrt%282%29%2Asqrt%285%29
sqrt%2815%29 = sqrt%283%29%2Asqrt%285%29
after factorizing, you will have

Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/34250: please help me solve this word problem. It is a PUZZLE WORD PROBLEM.

Mary is three years older than her twin brothers. Next year, the sum of the ages of the three will be exactly 102. How old are they now?

Anything about this problem would be helpful. Thanks =]
1 solutions

Answer 20549 by fanism(39) About Me  on 2006-04-19 19:01:56 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let Mary be M years old and her brother be B years old
Mary is three years older than her twin brothers, therefore
M = 3 + B -- eq1
Next year, the sum of the ages of the three will be exactly 102.
Since each one of them will grow 1 year old, therefore,
102 = (M+1) + (B+1) + (B+1) -- eq2
Sub eq1 into eq2,
102 = (3+B+1) + (B+1) + (B+1)
102 = 3B + 6
96 = 3B
B = 32
Put B = 32 into eq1,
M = 3 + 32
M = 35

Numbers_Word_Problems/34054: This question is from textbook college algebra
4)CLASSIC PROBLEM - A traveling salesman (selling shoes) stops at a farm in the Midwest. Before he could knock on the door, he noticed an old truck on fire. He rushed over and pulled a young lady out of the flaming truck. Farmer Brown came out and gratefully thanked the traveling salesman for saving his daughter’s life. Mr. Brown insisted on giving the man an award for his heroism.
So, the salesman said, “If you insist, I do not want much. Get your checkerboard and place one penny on the first square. Then place two pennies on the next square. Then place four pennies on the third square. Continue this until all 64 squares are covered with pennies.” As he’d been saving pennies for over 25 years, Mr. Brown did not consider this much of an award, but soon realized he made a miscalculation on the amount of money involved.
a)How much money would Mr. Brown have to put on the 32nd square?
Answer:
Show work in this space

b)How much would the traveling salesman receive if the checkerboard only had 32 squares?
Answer:
Show work in this space

c)Calculate the amount of money necessary to fill the whole checkerboard (64 squares). How much money would the farmer need to give the salesman?
Answer:
Show work in this space

Answer 20425 by fanism(39) About Me  on 2006-04-18 16:52:21 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
according to the question
"place one penny on the first square. Then place two pennies on the next square. Then place four pennies on the third square."
you will know the general equation is:
number of square = 2 ^ (number of square -1)
assume number of square = x
then, yields the equation
x = 2^(x-1)
----------
below shows verification:
if x = 1
1 = 2^(1-1) = 2^0 = 1
2 = 2^(2-1) = 2^1 = 2
3 = 2^(3-1) = 2^2 = 4
does this make sense? if yes, let's keep going
----------

a)How much money would Mr. Brown have to put on the 32nd square?
that means x = 32
x = 2^(x-1)
32 = 2^(32-1) = 2^31 = 2,147,483,648 pennies

b)How much would the traveling salesman receive if the checkerboard only had 32 squares?
= 2^31 + 2^30 + 2^29 + ...... + 2^0
use a calculator to calculate

c)Calculate the amount of money necessary to fill the whole checkerboard (64 squares). How much money would the farmer need to give the salesman?
= 2^63 + 2^62 + 2^61 + ...... + 2^0
use a calculator to calculate

Numbers_Word_Problems/34061: The sum of the digits of a two-digit number is 9. If the digits are reversed, the new number is 27 less than the original. Find the original number.
1 solutions

Answer 20414 by fanism(39) About Me  on 2006-04-18 15:47:09 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
assume the first digit is x and second digit is y
Since the sum of the digits of a two-digit number is 9, therefore
x + y = 9 -- eq1
it says if the digits are reversed, the new number is 27 less than the original.
since we are looking at the number like xy, to seperate them, it is actually 10x+y for x is a tens digit.
10y + x = 10x + y + 27
simplify it, u will get:
9y = 9x + 27
y = x + 3 -- eq2
sub eq2 into eq1, u will have
x + (x + 3) = 9
2x + 3 = 9
2x = 6
x = 3
put back into eq1,
3 + y = 9
y = 6
The original number is 36.

y = -3
sub y = -3 into any of the above equation,
let use eq1, u will get
x - (-3) = -1
x + 3 = -1
