Hi,
find three consecutive positive integers
What is the smallest integer? n
What is the second smallest integer? (n+1)
What is the largest integer? (n+2)
product of the first and third, minus the second, is 1 more than 6 times the third.
n(n+2) - (n+1) = 6(n+2)+1
n^2 -5n -14 = 0
(n+2)(n-7) = 0, +n+=+7 (tossing out the negative solution for n)
the three consecutive positive integers are: 7,8,9

Use the intermediate value theorem to determine whether the polynomial function has a zero in the given interval.
f(x) = 8x^3 - 10x^2 + 3x + 5
f(-1) = -8 - 10 - 3 + 5 = -16
f(0) = 5
Note: the continuous function value changes from negative to positive in the given interval:
function will have a zero in that interval

Hi,
A soccer team has 3 more boys and three-fourths as many girls as last year.
Let x and y represent the number of girls and boys last year.
This year would be (x+3) and 3/4y
The number of players on the team is the same as last year.
x+y = (x+3) + 3/4y
1/4y = 3
y = 12, number of girls on the team last year.

Probability-and-statistics/616509: 1. A random sample of 10 women was made to undergo a reducing program for 6 months. Their weights in pounds taken before and after undergoing the program are tabulated below.
Before 164 175 135 165 192 180 175 205 210 208
After 161 170 134 165 188 181 173 195 180 197
Is there a significant decrease in the weights of the women after the program? Test the significance at 0.05 level.

Hi
Note: 10 women
Using the Excel Data Analysis Tool:
Before: 164 175 135 165 192 180 175 205 210 208
|| m =180.9 and SD = 23.6
After: 161 170 134 165 188 181 173 195 180 197
|| m = 174.4 and SD = 18.6
t =
degrees of Freedom = (10+10)-2= 18 ... t =.6841, 5% significance level...
(Using t-test Table or t-test Calculator)
We can conclude that there is NO significant decrease in weight after the program

Hi,
A man rowed 3 miles upstream in 90 minutes
Let r represent the rowing r
D = rt OR r = D/t
(r-2) = 3/1.5 = 2
r-2 = 2
r = 4mi/hr
With the current, will travel 6mi/hr
