Inverses/653130: It's been several decades since I've done this so I appreciate the help.
-5x/3 + 2 > 12 = x < -6
Unfortunately I get x > -6
So my question is when using "< or >" and negative numbers, do you reverse the "<, >" when bringing the negative to the other side of the equation?
Thanks for the help.

Hi,
Using the following steps, one need not worry about the 'reverses inequality' rule
-5x/3 + 2 > 12
-5x/3 + 2 + 5x/3 > 12 + 5x/3
2 > 12 + 5x/3
-6 > x
Using this method of solving,(multiplying/dividing by negative number) Yes,reverses the inequality sign

Hi,
Using the standard slope-intercept form for an equation of a line y = mx + b
where m is the slope and b the y-intercept.
Line Through: (1,-4), parallel to y = -x + 3 ( m = -1) Slopes the same
New Line
y = -x + b ||Using pt(1,-4) to solve for b
-4 = -1 + b
-3 = b
y = -x - 3

New Line
y = (-1/2)x + b ||Using pt(2,1) to solve for b
1 = -1 + b
2 = b
y = (-1/2)x + 2

Hi,
Re TY, Following can also be found using the Excel function BINOMDIST()
BIONOMIAL Distrubtion: P(late) = .65 , n = 10
Using TI 83 Calculator
P(x ≤ 2) is binomcdf(10, .65, 2) 0r Excel function BINOMDIST(2,10,0.65,TRUE)
P(x > 7) = 1 - P(x ≤ 7) = 1 - binomcdf(10, .65, 7)
0r = 1 - BINOMDIST(7,10,0.65,TRUE)
Plain calculator works as well using P = nCx* p%5Ex%2Aq%5E%28n-x%29
P(x ≤ 2) = P(x = 0) + P(x = 1) + P(x = 2)
= 10C0(.65^0)(.35)^10 + 10C1(.65)^1(.35)^9 + 10C2(.65)^2(.35)^8
P(x > 7) = P(x = 8) + P(x = 9) + P(x = 10)

Quadratic-relations-and-conic-sections/652586: Hello! I am having a hard time understanding the way much of the online math resources are written. They all seem to be using a very mathematical sort of dialect (thus we can see... or to find x we need to complete a square, with no word on how one might accomplish this "completion of a square"), which in my opinion is counterproductive--the very people needing help with math are the very ones who won't understand the language! Anyways, that's a bit long-winded, so here's the problem:
"If a parabola opening to the left has a vertex at (-1, -3) and passes through point (-3,-2), what is the coefficient of the squared term in the parabola's equation?"
Thanks very much for reading this!

Hi,
the idea is to take the steps necessary so that the variable is isolated on one side of the EQ
2x+3x-5+7=10x+3-6x-4 ||combine Like Terms on each side of EQ
5x + 2 = 4x - 1 || combine Like Terms from BOTH sides of the EQ
5x+ 2 - 4x - 2 = 4x-1 - 4x -2
x = -3 ||Note: when x has been isolated, the we can Read x = -3 !
7=-5(2a-1)-(-11a+6) ||"eliminate the parentheses" Yes!
7 = -10a + 5 +11a - 6 ||combine Like Terms on each side of EQ
7 = a - 1 || combine Like Terms from BOTH sides of the EQ
8 = a

Hi,
How many different sets of 4 marbles can you package if you have blue, white, yellow and pink marbles?
Reference is being made to what colors the marbles are in each possible set
for example:
possible Sets:
all different colors: 1
All the same color: 4
3 of one color: 4*3 = 12
pairs of the same color: 6 bbyy,bbww,bbpp, yyww,yypp, ppww
2 of one color and 2 others different: 4*3 = 12
