Equations/24318: hi, I need your help with multi-step equations with fractions!
The problem is 3/4(b+8)=15. I have gotten as far as 3/4 times b. Please help! 1 solutions
Answer 12916 by elima(1433) on 2006-01-12 18:17:23 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!3/4(b+8)=15
You need to also distribute the 3/4 to 8;
 (b)+  (8)=15
 b+  =15
 b+6=15
 b=9
Now multiply each side by the reciprical of  , which is  ;
 b  =(9)
b=
b=12
hope you understand

Quadratic_Equations/24204: how do you plot the table? 1 solutions
Answer 12904 by elima(1433) on 2006-01-12 09:38:13 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Do you mean when your are given a table of x and y points?
ex.
x|y
---
0|2
1|3
2|1
your points would be;
(0,,2), (1,3), (2,1)
You would plott those on the graph, then draw a line connecting them.
Hope I understood what you were asking, it is a little difficult to understand some of the questions completely because you are limited to the way you can ask a queastion.
Hope I got it

Expressions-with-variables/24253: How do I graph y-x=-5 ? could you show me step by step please . THANKS !!
1 solutions
Answer 12901 by elima(1433) on 2006-01-12 09:16:16 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!You start by making a table and choosing values for x and then solving the equation for y.
y-x=-5
when x=0;
y-(0)=-5
y=-5
then y=-5
when x=1
y-(1)=-5
y=-5+1
y=-4
then y=-4
when x=2
y-(2)=-5
y=-5+2
y=-3
then y=-3
Now you have three points, so you plot them on the graph and draw a line connecting them.

absolute-value/24223: dividend, divider, quotient, remainder.
For example : 11/2 , 11 is the dividend, 2 is the divider. After division, we'll
get 5 as the quotient & 1 as the remainder. This is what I learned in my
country. In U.S.A., do we use any other names for dividend divider, quotient
& remainder.

Evaluation_Word_Problems/24219: The product of a number and 3 is twice the sum of that number and five.
I can't seem to plot it or seperate it to solve the problem, please help!
thanks 1 solutions
Answer 12873 by elima(1433) on 2006-01-11 19:56:25 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!The product of a number and 3 is twice the sum of that number and five.
let x= the number
"the product" meansanswer to multiplication, so;
3x= the product of a number and 3;
"is" means =;
"sum' meansanswer to an addition;
"sum of that number and 5";
x+5;
"of" means multiply;
"twicw the sum"
2(x+5);
3x=2(x+5)
3x=2x+10
3x-2x=10
x=10

(4n+5)x5=-n-24 1 solutions
Answer 12861 by elima(1433) on 2006-01-11 15:22:12 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!(4n+5)x5=-n-24
Is that 5x outside the parenthesis or *5?
I'm assuming it is *5, if so;
(4n+5)*5=-n-24
distribute the 5;
20n+25=-n-24
add n tto both sides;
20n+25+n=-24
subtract 25 to both sides;
21n=-24-25
21n=-49
divide each side by 21;
n=
n=

Graphs/24168: Graph the equation: 2y+x=-3. 1 solutions
Answer 12852 by elima(1433) on 2006-01-11 10:25:15 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!2y+x=-3.
There are diffeerent ways to solve this. One way is to choose some easy points for x, (say 0, 1, and 2), plug them in, and calculate the corresponding y-values.
2y+(0)=-3
2y=-3
y=-3/2
First point; (0,-3/2)
2y+(1)=-3
2y=-3-1
2y=-4
y=-2
2nd point;
(1,-2)
2y+(2)=-3
2y=-3-2
2y=-5
y=-5/2
3rd point;
(2,-5/2)
Now plot these points on a graph, and you have your line.
hope you understand

Linear-equations/24076: Hi my name is Lindsey and i was wondering if u could explain to me how to graph linear inequalities in two variables? thank you so much!! 1 solutions
Answer 12777 by elima(1433) on 2006-01-10 18:05:29 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!To graph a linear inequality in two variables (say, x and y), first get y alone on one side. Then consider the related equation obtained by changing the inequality sign to an equals sign. The graph of this equation is a line.
If the inequality is strict (< or >), graph a dashed line. If the inequality is not strict ( or ), graph a solid line.
Example:
Graph the inequality  .

Now, substitute x = 0, y = 0 to decide whether (0, 0) satisfies the inequality
This is false. So, shade the half-plane which does not include the point (0, 0).
Hope this helps

Equations/24064: PLEASE HELP ME SOLVE THIS EQUATION WORD PROBLEM:
At the beginning of the school year , Jamie's height was 62 and 1/2 inches . During the year she grew 1 and 3/4 inches , 1 /8 of an inch more than she grew the previous year.
(A) What was jamie's height at the end of the school year?
(B) How tall was Jamie at the start of the previous school year?
Thank you 1 solutions
Answer 12775 by elima(1433) on 2006-01-10 16:37:53 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!a)You need to add her hieght at the beginning of the year to how much she grew.
62 1/2 + 1 3/4 = 62 2/4 + 1 3/4=62 5/4= 63 1/4
b)Now subtract 1/8 from 1 3/4,
1 3/4 - 1/8 = 1 5/8
Now subtract that from 62 1/2
62 1/2 - 1 5/8= 60 7/8
So her hieght at the beginningof last year was - 60 7/8
Hope you understand

Equations/24058: 6=-4+h
-7+d=-3
9=m+11
f+(-9)=-19 1 solutions
Answer 12774 by elima(1433) on 2006-01-10 16:19:42 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!6=-4+h
Add 4 to both sides
6+4=-4+h=4
10=h
-7+d=-3
add 7 to both sides;
-7+d+7=3+7
d=10
9=m+11
Subtract both sides by 11;
9-11=m+11-11
-2=m
f+(-9)=-19
add 9 to both sides;
f+(-9)+9=-19+9
f=-10

Equations/23911: how do you solve systems with subtitute's
can please solve a few of these example problems so I get an ideal of what I need to do.
1)2x+7y=3 x=1-4y
2)4c=3d+3 c=d-1
3)3x-5y=11 x-3y=1
4)3x-2y=12 x=2y=6 1 solutions
Answer 12768 by elima(1433) on 2006-01-10 15:20:35 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!You are already given what one variable =, so plug that into the equation to solve for the other variable.
1)2x+7y=3 x=1-4y
2(1-4y)+7y=3
2-8y+7y=3
2-y=3
y=3-2
y=1
2x+7(1)=3
2x+7=3
2x=3-7
2x=-4
x=-2
See if you can solve the others, if you have problems let me know.

Graphs/23999: how do you graph this system of linear inequalities...
y is less than or equal to 2x+3
y>-x+5 1 solutions
Answer 12763 by elima(1433) on 2006-01-10 12:43:13 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Diregard the other answers I sent to you. I pressed the wrong button.
Start by solving each inequality for y; and put in slope y-intercept form, y=mx+b;

y>-x+5
They both are already is in slope intercept form;
The first one;
your y-intercept = 3
secnd one;
y-intercept=5
So what you do on the graph is plot points at your y-intercept;
Now your first slope=2
second slope=-1

Now the important part is the shading. since the first eq. is < and = to, you are going to make it a solid line and shade the area BELOW the line.
The second eq.is > so you are going to make the line dotted and shade the area ABOVE the line.
Hope you understand

Linear-equations/24053: I dont remember what the rules are for reducing a linear equation with this many parentheses in it, Can you help me with this one? Do you start with the inside first and then work your way out or do you work it just from left to right? I tried working from the inside out and came up with 9 instead of the correct answer which is 15... help :(
x-{3x-[2x-(8-x)+2]+3}-6=0 1 solutions
Answer 12762 by elima(1433) on 2006-01-10 12:30:40 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Is the answer 15 or -15? I keep coming up with -15.
x-{3x-[2x-(8-x)+2]+3}-6=0
It sounds like you are forgetting the -1 outside the parenthesis and brackets.
You need to distribute that before you add like terms.
x-{3x-[2x-8+x+2]+3}-6=0
Now add like terms in brackets;
x-{3x-[x-6]+3}-6=0
Now distribute the -1 outside the brackets;
x-{3x-x+6+3}-6=0
Add like terms inside parenthesis;
x-{2x+9}-6=0
now distribute the -1 again outside the par;
x-2x-9-6=0
-x-15=0
-x=15
x=-15

Linear_Algebra/24004: please please help i'm returning to school for the first time in years. i received a pop quiz in chemistry and i bombed it i have the quiz to go over. if you could explain one problem to me i think ican figure out the rest
(2*10^-2)^2
WHAT DO I DO?? :) 1 solutions
Answer 12688 by elima(1433) on 2006-01-09 20:23:05 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!First of all you need to do what is in the parenthesis;

Now you multiply the exponents;

A negative exponent turns it into a fraction;

Good Luck with school, that's great that you are returning. I hope we can help more
