real-numbers/16530: How do you write a repeating decimal as a fraction?

1 solutions

Answer 8072 by elima(1433) About Me  on 2005-10-22 07:29:09 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If all the digits are repeating from the beginning, you would place those in the numerator and 9's in the denominator.
You place as many nines as you have digits repeating;
ex.
0.18 and the 18 is repeating;
18%2F99; then reduce
Ex.
.405 and the 405 is repeating;
405%2F999; then reduce

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(-4)(15p)= -60p
You would multiply the -4(15), which is a negative * a positive, so the answer will be negative, also 4(15)=60
So tou have -60, and the p stays p because we do not now what it =.
So your answer would be;
-60p
Hope this helps some

-4%2F9%282x-4%29=48
Distribute the -4%2F9
-4%2F9%282x%2F1%29-4%2F9%28-4%2F1%29=48
-8x%2F916%2F9=48
Multiply each side by 9;

Two consecutive odd numbers. Five less than twice the smaller is equal to four more than the larger. Find the two numbers
Our odd numbers will be;
x, x+2
Five less than twice the smaller is equal to;
2x-5=
four more than the larger
(x+2)+4
Now but them together;
2x-5=(x+2)+4
2x-5=x+6
2x-x=6+5
x=11
x+2=13
So the odd numbers are;
11, 13

Numbers_Word_Problems/16351: the greater of 2 numbers is 7 more than the lesser. Three times the greater number is 5 more than 4 times the lesser number find the nuber
1 solutions

Answer 7988 by elima(1433) About Me  on 2005-10-20 19:58:10 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x=greater number
y=lesser number
the greater of 2 numbers is 7 more than the lesser
x=y+7
Three times the greater number is 5 more than 4 times the lesser number
3x=5+4y
We will begin by substituting x=y+7 in the second equation;
3(y+7)=5+4y
3y+21=5+4y
3y-4y=5-21
-y=-16
y=16
Now we have what y =, so we plug it into the equation to find x,
x=y+7
x=16+7
x=23
We are done, we have both y and x;
x=23
y=16
Don't forget to check your answer!

Human-and-algebraic-language/16390: The sun of two numbers is 64. Twice the lesser number is five more that the greater number. Find the numbers.
1 solutions

Answer 7987 by elima(1433) About Me  on 2005-10-20 19:37:32 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The sun of two numbers is 64. Twice the lesser number is five more that the greater number. Find the numbers.
let x = the lesser number
let y = greater number
So our equations would be;
x+y=64
2x=y+5
Now first we will solve x;
x+y=64
y=64-x
Now substitute this answer for y into one of the equations;
2x=(64-x)+5
2x=69-x
2x+x=69
3x=69
x=23
So now we have our x, so we can plug it into an equation to get y;
2(23)=y+5
46=y+5
46-5=y
41=y
So now we have;
x=23
y=41
Don't forget to check your answer!

Equations/16384: 5x+5y=40
-5x+4y=-4

Answer 7983 by elima(1433) About Me  on 2005-10-20 19:23:24 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
We will solve this one using elimination so we can find what one variable =;
We begin by adding the two equations toogether;
5x+5y=40
-5x+4y=-4
----------
9y=36
Divide both sides by 9
9y%2F9=36%2F9
y=4
Now we have what y=, so now we can solve for x;
5x+5(4)=40
5x+20=40
5x=40-20
5x=20
x=4
So now we have;
x=4
y=4

Complex_Numbers/16312: please help me with {x+6y=2
{5x+4y=36
1 solutions

Answer 7973 by elima(1433) About Me  on 2005-10-20 15:57:59 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
eqn.1 x+6y=2
eqn.2 5x+4y=36
We will begin this by eliminating one variable so we can solve the other.
Lets eliminate the x, to do that we need to multiply -5 to eqn.1
(-5)x+6y=2
-5x-30y=-10;
Now we will add eqn.1 and eqn.2 together;
-5x-30y=-10
5x+4y=36
-----------
-26y=26
y=-1
Now we have what y =, so we can plug that into either equation and find x;
x+6(-1)=2
x-6=2
x=8
Now we have our answer;
x=8, y=-1
Don't forget to check;
x+6y=2
8+6(-1)=2
8-6=2

Age_Word_Problems/16343: I have a really hard time on getting the formula on word problems. I read them, understand what they are asking, I even get the answer but cannot seem to translate the words on to the paper in a form of a equation.
The problem I am having trouble on is:
"Batman is 20 years older then robin. In 4 years, Batman will be twice Robin age. How old are they now?"
I get..
Robin=x
Batman=20+x(Batman older by 20 years )
Batman=2(20+x)( Batman where he is twice as Robin)
The answer I get is that Batman is 36 right now, and Robin is 16, because in 4 years Batman is going to be 40, and Robin 20, Batman is TWICE Robin's age. 20x2=40...
Please help me in getting Enlgish translated into Algebra equation.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
"Batman is 20 years older then robin. In 4 years, Batman will be twice Robin age. How old are they now?"
Robin=x
Batman=20+x(Batman older by 20 years )
Very good, you have this correct;
But you do not have the next eqution correct;
Batman will be twice Robin age;
In your equation you have Batmans age;
Batman=2(20+x)
It should be;
2x(Robins age)
Batman is 20 years older then robin,In 4 years,
20+x+4=
Batman will be twice Robin age.
2x
So our equation would be;
20+x+4=2x
x+24=2x
24=2x-x
24=x
So Robins age is 24;
Batmans age;
(24)+20=44
Now check;
20+(24)+4=2(24)
48=48
Hope you see where you went wrong, you were doing a good job though;

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Like terms are any term that is EXACTLY ALIKE.
such as;
x+x=; you can add them together because they are exactly alike;
x+x=2x
But if you had terms such as;
x%2Bx%5E2; you could not add them together because they are not exactly alike.
the first x is to the power of one, the second x is to the power of 2;
So in your equations;
8s - 3s + 4k =
You can subtract 8s-3s, because they are like terms;
8s-3s+4k=11s+4k; you can not add these together because they are not like terms, they have different variables.
10x + 6y -5x =;
You can subtract 10x-5x, because they are like terms,
10x-5x=5x+6y; you can not add together because they are not like terms.
12 + 6p + 3q - 5p + 7q =
You can subtract 6p-5p=p;
3q+7q=10q;
So you have;
12+p+10q
You can not add the 12 because it is not like any other term.

Numeric_Fractions/16172: I am really confused, how do you multiply and divide fractions?
For example what is 6 divided by 2/3? and 2/5 x 1/2?
1 solutions

Answer 7914 by elima(1433) About Me  on 2005-10-19 19:00:33 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Multiplying and dividing fractions are much easier than adding and subtracting.
6 divided by 2/3?
With your first problem, when it comes to dividing fractions, you need to multiply the inverseinvert the divisor:
Which is 2/3 and it becomes 3/2
Now we multiply the fractions;
6/1*3/2=18/2=9
2/5 x 1/2?
You multiply the numerator times the numerator and denominator times the denominator.
2/5*1/2=2*1, 5*2
2/10=1/5

Answer 7905 by elima(1433) About Me  on 2005-10-19 18:27:50 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Why does the equation n + (n+1) + (n+2) = 84
Since you do not know what the integers are you will make the first integer =n;
Now since they are consecutive, it means the next integer right after n, which would be n+1,
ex.
lets say 3 is our first integer, what is the next integer after 3? 4
What do you add to 3 to get 4? 3+1
The third integer would be? 3+2=5
So since you do not know the integers, you use a variable such as n.
n = first integer
n+1=second integer
n+2= third integer
Hope you understand

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
3/4 (24 - 8b) = 2 (5b + 1)
First of all distribute on left side;
3%2F4%2A24-3%2F4%2A8b=72%2F4-24%2F4b, simplify
18-6b
Now the right side distribute:
2*5b+2*1=10b+2
But the equation together;
18-6b=10b+2
Subtract 18 from both sides, and subtract 10b from both sides;
18-6b-18-10b=10b+2-18-10b
-16b=-16
Divide each side by -16
b=1
