Word_Problems_With_Coins/183313: Stan has 52 quarters and nickels. He has three times many nickels as quarters. How much money does he have.
1 solutions

Answer 137662 by elima(1433) About Me  on 2009-02-23 11:04:01 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Stan has 52 quarters and nickels. He has three times many nickels as quarters. How much money does he have.
n + q = 52
3n=q
substitute;
n + 3n =52
4n=52
n=13
13+q=52
q=39
so he has 13 nickels and 39 quarters, now we need to find out how much money that actually is;
nickel = .05
.05(13)=.65
quarters = .25
.25(39)=9.75
9.75 + .65 = $10.40

Just remember, if the equation is not in slope-intercept form, you need to put it in that form.
Then identify the slope and y-intercept, plot the point on the y-axis and use the slope to find the next point, then draw the line.

y = 2x - 11

Answer 128603 by elima(1433) About Me  on 2008-12-16 20:04:54 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Your steps are correct, you are not watching your signs;
6x-24+4x= -2x +6
you are going to add the 6x + 4x; the minus sign goes with the 24, not the 4. The 4 is positive.
10x-24= -2x+ 6
Then you should have added the 2x to both sides, it is a negative 2, so you need to add to cancel it out;
12x-24=6
+24 +24
you would add 24 to both sides since it is negative;
12x = 30
The answer is a mixed fraction;
x = 30%2F12
x = 2%281%2F5%29
CHECK:
6x-24+4x= -2x +6

Systems-of-equations/170331: This question is from textbook Introductory Algebra
Solve using the substitution method
y = 2x - 5
3x + y = 15
1 solutions

Answer 125884 by elima(1433) About Me  on 2008-12-01 14:28:05 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Since you are already given what y equals, we will plug that into the second equation to find x;
y = 2x - 5
3x + y = 15
===================
3x + (2x - 5) = 15
5x - 5 = 15
5x = 20
x = 4
Now we have x, lets plug that into the equation to find y;
3(4) + y =15
12 + y =15
y = 15-12
y = 3

A proof is a logical argument to convince someone that a statement is true.
There are steps you will try and follow when proving something,
1. Write information you've been given as true.
2. Write what you need to prove.
3. Draw a diagram and mark given information.
4. Plan how to get from the given to the prove.
5. Add to the diagram if needed
6. Set out logical sequence of statements and reasons beginning with what you know and ending with what you've been asked to prove (postulates, definitions, theorems, etc).

Linear_Algebra/166353: Solve by elimination.

1 solutions

Answer 122642 by elima(1433) About Me  on 2008-11-07 16:03:51 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
-3+2y-5z=-3
3x-y+3z=4
3x+5y-8z=6
We will take two of the equations, add them together to eliminate a variable;
-3x+2y-5z=-3
+ 3x-y+3z=4
------------
y-2z=1
=================
Now take two other equations and add together to eliminate a variable;
-3x+2y-5z=-3
+ 3x+5y-8z=6
-------------
7y-13z=3
===========================
Now add these two together to eliminate a variable;put first we will need to multiply the first equation by -7 so we will be able to eliminate;
-7(y-2z=1)
-7y+14z=-7
Now we add;
-7y+14z=-7
+ 7y-13z=3
-----------
z=-4
=============================
Now we have our z, so we use that in one of the new equations to find y;
y-2(-4)=1
y+8=1
y=-7
================================
We have our y and z so lets plug those values into one of the original equations to find x;
3x-(-7)+3(-4)=4
3x+7-12=4
3x-5=4
3x=9
x=3
Hope you got all of that

divide each side by 2;

we end with;

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(-3, -5), (-5, 1)
m=%281-%28-5%29%29%2F%28-5-%28-3%29%29
m=6%2F-2
slope= 6%2F-2+=+-3

Is all you need to do is plug the numbers given as your x and solve for y;
x | y
-2 |
-1 |
0 |
1 |
2 |
2x + y = 42
2(-2)+y=42
-4+y=42
y=42+4
y=46
==============
2x + y = 42
2(-1)+y=42
-2+y=42
y=42+2
y=44
================
2x + y = 42
2(0)+y=42
y=42
==============
2x + y = 42
2(1)+y=42
2+y=42
y=42-2
y=40
============
2x + y = 42
2(2)+y=42
4+y=42
y=38

Problems-with-consecutive-odd-even-integers/164095: the product of two consecutive even integers is 168
1 solutions

Answer 120907 by elima(1433) About Me  on 2008-10-26 15:53:18 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1st integer = x
2nd integer = x+2
======================
x(x+2)=168
x%5E2+%2B+2x+=+168
x%5E2+%2B+2x-168=0
(x+14)(x-12)=0
x+14=0
x=-14
x-12=0
x=12
=================
So we end up with 2 possibilities;
x = 12 or x = -14
Now we need our second;
x + 2 = 12+2=14
x+2 = -14+2=-12
====================
When x = 12, the second integer = 14
When x = -14, second integer = -12

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The length of a rectangle is 3 feet less than twice the width. If the perimeter is 54ft. find the dimensions.
L = 2W-3
W= W
2L + 2W = 54
2(2w-3)+2W=54
4W-6+2W=54
6W=60
W=10
L=2(10)-3
L=20-3 = 17
check;
2(17)+2(10)=54
34+20=54

Numbers_Word_Problems/164082: An 18in piece of wire is cut into 3 peices. The third piece is 4 inches more than half the second piece and the first piece is 2 inches shorter than the third piece. Find the length of these three pieces.
1 solutions

Answer 120904 by elima(1433) About Me  on 2008-10-26 15:14:34 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x = length of the pieces
2nd piece = x
3rd piece = 1/2x+4
1st piece = 3rd piece - 2 = (1/2x+4)-2
Now lets add the pieces together and have them = 18;
x + 1/2x+4 + (1/2x+4)-2 =18
x+ x+4+2=18
2x+6=18
2x=12
x=6
Now we have the length of the 2nd, lets plug this into the others to find their length;
3rd = 1/2(6)+4
3rd = 3+4= 7
1st = 7-2 = 5
check;
5+6=11+7=18
