y = –x^2 – 2x
I'll do the 1st one and you can do the rest.
y=(-3)^2-2*-3
y=9+6=15
You shold have no trouble. Just replace x with the number in the table, sign included. Be sure to put the negative numbers in parentheses before you square them.

sets-and-operations/103599: I've been on this problem for almost 2 hours and I'm getting more and more frustrated.
Solve each of the following systems by substitution
28.
4x - 12y = 5
-x + 3y = -1
This is one of the answers I got, but none of my answers are right when I try to check them
y = -x - (-1)/3
y = -x +1/3
4x - 12(-x +1/3) = 5
4x + 12x (-12)/3 = 5
16x - 12x / 3 = 5
4x/ 3= 5
4x = 5(3)
x = 15/4
x = 3.75
What am I missing??? Please advise...
Thank you Rev. B

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A) 4x - 12y = 5
B) -x + 3y = -1
.
B) -x=-3y-1
x=3y+1
.
4(3y+1)-12y=5
12y+4-12y=5
0y=1
.
There is no answer to this system. Why? Because these 2 lines have the same slope. They are parallel.
A) y=x/3-(5/12)
B) y=x/3-(1/3)
the slope is 1/3 for both equations.

The hypotenuse is the line opposite the right angle. It is always the longest of the 3 lines in a right triangle.
If you add up the squares of each of the other 2 lines they will add up EXACTLY to the square of the hypotenuse.
That's nice, but usually you have to find out what the unsquared hypotenuse is.
To do that we need to get the square root of the hypotenuse.
Let's try one out.
.
one side is 5 and the other is 12 what is the hypotenuse (c)?
5%5E2%2B12%5E2=c%5E2
25%2B144=c%5E2
169=c%5E2
What is the square root of 169? A. 13 because 13*13=169
So, c=13
The hypotenuse is 13
.
Good luck on the test.
Stay cool.

4x^2 + 2x – 3 = 0
x^2+.5x-.75=0 divide the equation by 4 to make the coeficient of the 1st term 1.
x^2+.5x =.75
x^2+.5x+.0625=.75+.0625 Divide the 2nd term by 2 and square the result and make it the new 3rd term and add it to the right side. Now we have a perfect square on the left.
(x+.25)^2=.8125 factor the left and combine on the right.
x+.25=+-sqrt(.8125)
x=-.25+-sqrt(.8125)
x=-1.1514, x=0.6514

x^2 + 2x – 1
To find out if any quadratic equation is a perfect square take the middle term (+2), divide it in half (1) and square it (1).
1 should be the final term but the final term is (-1) so the equation is not a perfect square.

Quadratic equation ax%5E2%2Bbx%2Bc=0 (in our case 9x%5E2%2B-54x%2B74+=+0) has the following solutons:

x%5B12%5D+=+%28b%2B-sqrt%28+b%5E2-4ac+%29%29%2F2%5Ca

For these solutions to exist, the discriminant b%5E2-4ac should not be a negative number.

First, we need to compute the discriminant b%5E2-4ac: b%5E2-4ac=%28-54%29%5E2-4%2A9%2A74=252.

Discriminant d=252 is greater than zero. That means that there are two solutions: +x%5B12%5D+=+%28--54%2B-sqrt%28+252+%29%29%2F2%5Ca.

8-9t=21t-17
25=30t add 9t and 17 to both sides.
t=25/30=5/6 divide each side by 30.
Check:
8-9*(5/6)=21*(5/6)-17
8-45/6=105/6-17
48-45=105-102 multiply both sides times 6.
3=3

Expressions-with-variables/103236: It's been a long time since I've done Algebra and I don't know how to help my daughter with this one....
A banana contains 3 more milligrams (mg) of calcium than an apple and 40 mg of calcium less than an orange. How much calcium is there in an orange if it contains the same amount as 5 apples and a banana.
I'd like to see how this is written out in equation form....not just get the answer.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
a=mg of Ca in an apple, b=mg of Ca in a bannana, g=mg of Ca in an orange
b=a+3...a=b-3
g=b+40
g=5a+b...g=5(b-3)+b...g=5b-15+b...g=6b-15...g-6b=-15
.
g=b+40
C) g-6b=-15
.
replace b+40 for g in equation C)
b+40-6b=-15
-5b+40=-15
-5b=-55 subtract 40 from each side.
b=11 mg divide each by -5.
a=8 mg
g=51 mg
.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
multiply both sides times 6 to get rid of the fractions.
6x^3-5x^2-44x+15=0
Now you can use the sythetic division.
x=3 may be a zero, so try the division by (x-3)

In work problems turn things upside down; add them; turn them right side up for the answer.
1st student: does 1/3 of the job in 1 hr
2nd student: does 1/4 fo the job in 1 hr
.
1/3+1/4=4/12+3/12=7/12 of the job gets done in 1 hr by both of them.
.
12/7 hrs it takes them to do it together or 1 hr 5/7 or about 1 hr 43 min

3%28x%2B1%29-6=%28x%2B1%29%28x-1%29 multiply both sides times (x-1)(x+1)
3x+3-6=x^2-1 Expand.
x^2-3x+2=0 subtract 3x-3 from each side.
(x-1)(x-2)=0
x=2, x=1
x=1 gives a division by zero error in the original equation.
x=2 is the only answer.
