Numbers_Word_Problems/503739: the difference of the reciprocals of two consecutive odd numbers is 1/84. find the numbers. 1 solutions
Answer 339394 by edjones(7569) on 2011-09-25 00:57:36 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!1/x - 1/(x+2) = 1/84
84(x+2)-84x=x(x+2) multiply each side by 84x(x+2)
84x+168-84x=x^2+2x
x^2+2x-168=0
(x-12)(x+14)=0
x=12, x=-14
The numbers are 12 and 14 or -14 and -12.
Both sets of numbers are even.

Numbers_Word_Problems/501593: The total cost of a sandwich, a glass of milk, and an apple is $2.35 What was the price of each, if the sandwich cost twice as much as the milk and the apple cost 90 cents less than the sandwich? 1 solutions
Answer 338567 by edjones(7569) on 2011-09-20 23:35:01 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!s=cost of the sandwich.
m=s/2
a=s-.9
s + s/2 + s-.9 = 2.35
2s+s+2s-1.8=4.7 Multiply each side by 2.
5s-1.8=4.7
5s=6.5
s=$1.30
m=$.65
a=$.40

Travel_Word_Problems/501524: Alice is an alligator. Her swimming speed is 1.80m/s.
How much time is needed for her to swim 200m in a lake?
I got this one the equation I used was t=d/r (time=distance/rate). I got 111.1s
Is this right?
The next couple of questions build off each other. The one I am currently stuck on is:
Alice swims 1.80m/s in still water.
Alice then swims 200m DOWNSTREAM in a river taking 80s. What is the speed of the current?
I tried to rearrange and solve the previous equation for (r) since rate is what the unknown is, but ti doesn't come out right I get like 16000s. i need to know what I am doing wrong.
I need help mainly with comprehension of the question, I need to know what to ask myself to get the equation going. Please help. 1 solutions
