Solved by pluggable solver: SOLVE quadratic equation with variable
Quadratic equation ax%5E2%2Bbx%2Bc=0 (in our case 1x%5E2%2B18x%2B-194+=+0) has the following solutons:

x%5B12%5D+=+%28b%2B-sqrt%28+b%5E2-4ac+%29%29%2F2%5Ca

For these solutions to exist, the discriminant b%5E2-4ac should not be a negative number.

First, we need to compute the discriminant b%5E2-4ac: b%5E2-4ac=%2818%29%5E2-4%2A1%2A-194=1100.

Discriminant d=1100 is greater than zero. That means that there are two solutions: +x%5B12%5D+=+%28-18%2B-sqrt%28+1100+%29%29%2F2%5Ca.

x%5B1%5D+=+%28-%2818%29%2Bsqrt%28+1100+%29%29%2F2%5C1+=+7.583123951777
x%5B2%5D+=+%28-%2818%29-sqrt%28+1100+%29%29%2F2%5C1+=+-25.583123951777

Quadratic expression 1x%5E2%2B18x%2B-194 can be factored:
1x%5E2%2B18x%2B-194+=+1%28x-7.583123951777%29%2A%28x--25.583123951777%29
Again, the answer is: 7.583123951777, -25.583123951777. Here's your graph:
graph%28+500%2C+500%2C+-10%2C+10%2C+-20%2C+20%2C+1%2Ax%5E2%2B18%2Ax%2B-194+%29

Functions/204876: This question is from textbook College Algebra
Find the domain of the function and identify and asymptotes.
y=2/4-x
1 solutions

Answer 154662 by edjones(7569) About Me  on 2009-07-31 00:26:27 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
y=2/(4-x) Assuming that this is the problem.
.
The domain is all real numbers except x=4 because division by zero is not allowed.
There is a vertical asymptote at x=4.
There is a horizontal asymptote at y=0 because x in the denominator is a higher degree than x in the numerator.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
a^(-3)b^(1/3)a^(3/4)b^3a^(-9/4)
=a^((-12/4)+(3/4)-(9/4))b(1/3)+(9/3)
=a^(-18/4)b^(10/3)
.
b^10/9 would be correct if the denominator was a^(-9/4) instead of a^(9/4)
Check the original practice test to see if you made an error copying it.

Answer 151517 by edjones(7569) About Me  on 2009-06-26 20:00:14 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(2x-1)/(2x+1) =( 3x+2)/(3x+2) Assuming that this is the problem
(2x-1)/(2x+1)=1
2x-1=2x+1
0=2
the equation is false.

Rectangles/201289: The ratio of the areas of two squares is 6:1. find the corresponding ratio of the lengths of the diagonals of the two squares ?
1 solutions

Answer 151514 by edjones(7569) About Me  on 2009-06-26 19:45:46 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let s=length of a side and A=area
s^2=A
when s=1 then area=1
when s=sqrt(6) the area=6
The length of the diagonals can be found using a^2+b^2=c^2
1+1=2
diagonal =sqrt(2)
6+6=12
diagonal = sqrt(12)
=sqrt(4*3)
=2sqrt(3)
The ratio of the lengths of the diagonals is 2sqrt(3):sqrt(2)

Expressions-with-variables/200547: If Sam and odel were telling pizzas and sam sold half as many pizzas as odel and together they sold 126 pizzas. How many pizzas did sam sell? (That is the question] i tried multipying "x(x/2)=126" but the answer didnt come out right. how would you set this equation up to solve the problem ?

Answer 150808 by edjones(7569) About Me  on 2009-06-18 19:00:01 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You had the right idea but you add the numbers instead multiplying.
Sam's pizzas + Odel's = 126
Let x=number of pizzas Odel sold.
x/2 + x = 126
x+2x=252 multiply each side by 2 to eliminate fraction.
3x=252
x=84
84/2=42 Number of pizzas Sam sold.

Travel_Word_Problems/200208: a boat traveled 100 miles downstream and back. the trip downstream took 5 hoours. the trip back took 25 hours. what is the speed of the boat in still water? what is the speed of the current?

Answer 150658 by edjones(7569) About Me  on 2009-06-17 00:19:44 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let r=rate of the boat, s=speed of boat in still water, c=speed of current, t=time and d=distance
r=s + - d)
t*r=d
.
25(s-c)=100
s-c=4
s=4+c
.
5(s+c)=100
s+c=20
4+c+c=20 substitute 4+c for s.
2c=16
c=8 mph speed of current.
.
s=4+8
s=12 speed of boat in still water.
