Numbers_Word_Problems/222733: The sum of the digits of a four-digit number is 27. If the ten's digit and the unit's digit are reversed, the resulting number exceeds the original number by 45. What is the LARGEST possible value for the original four-digit number? Explain your answer. 1 solutions
Answer 166807 by edjones(7569) on 2009-10-07 01:09:57 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Let t=tens number and u=units number
10t+u=10u+t-45
9t=9u-45
t=u-5 for the last 2 numbers
We want the first 2 numbers to be 99 if possible in order to have the largest number possible.
So t+u=9 would be best.
u-5+u=9 substitute u-5 for t
2u-5=9
2u=14
u=7
t=2
The number is 9927

Travel_Word_Problems/222780: A jet plane traveling at 500 mph overtakes a propeller plane traveling at 200 mph that had a 2-hour head start. How far from the starting point are the planes? 1 solutions
Answer 166795 by edjones(7569) on 2009-10-07 00:03:57 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!d=st Where d=distance, t=time, s=speed
d is the same for both planes.
500t=200(t+2) head start of 2 hr=t+2
500t=200t+400
300t=400
t=4/3 hr
500 * 4/3 = 2000/3 =666.67 mi

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/220909: 3. Combine like terms, and write in descending order: 3/4 x^3+4x^2-x^3+7
now ive tryed this so far but not sure if right please help me
3/4x, 3/4x, 3/4x = 21/64x
4x, 4x = 16x
x, x, x =x^3
7 = 7
16x + 7 + 21/64x + x^3
is this correct? 1 solutions

Angles/214266: If three times the supplement of an angle is subtracted from seven times the complement of the angle, the answer is the same as that obtained by trisecting a right angle. Find the supplement. 1 solutions
Answer 162068 by edjones(7569) on 2009-09-18 01:08:14 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Let a=the angle
trisecting a right angle=90/3=30
compliment=90-a
supplement=180-a
.
7(90-a)-3(180-a)=30
630-7a-540+3a=30
90-4a=30
-4a=-60
a=15 degrees.

Word_Problems_With_Coins/214267: Todd has 48 words to spell for a puzzle. His mother says she will pay him $1.00 for every word he spells correctly but he has to pay her $0.60 for every word he spells incorrectly. If Todd makes $19.20, how many words did he spell correctly?
Define the variable, create the equation, and solve. 1 solutions
Answer 162067 by edjones(7569) on 2009-09-18 00:58:13 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Let c=number of words spelled correctly and 48-c=number of words spelled incorrectly.
c-.6(48-c)=19.2
c-28.8+.6c=19.2
1.6c=48
c=30 words spelled correctly.

Graphs/214270: Okay so I have 2 questions.
my first one is, how do you figure out the function of a graph that
is not linear besides plugging in values for x?
My second one is, how do you figure out what the end behavior of a graph is??
and what is an asymtope? 1 solutions
Answer 162066 by edjones(7569) on 2009-09-18 00:49:42 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!1) You have to plug them in or use a graphing calculator.
.
2) Asymptote= a straight line that is closely approached but never touched by a curve.
Take 1/(x+1) for example (the graph below). X can never be -1 (the vertical asymptote) because division by zero is not allowed. The end behavior of the function as x becomes very large (or very small) is that the lines get very close to the horizontal asymptote but never touch it. Note that there is a horizontal asymptote at y=0 also.
