Geometry_Word_Problems/228895: find the measures of an isosceles triangle if the measure if the vertex angle is 40 degrees less than the sum of the base angles 1 solutions
Answer 169808 by edjones(7569) on 2009-10-19 19:40:41 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!let the vertex angle=v and a base angle=b
v=2b-40 given
2b+v=180 all the angles of a triangle add up to 180.
2b+2b-40=180 replace v with 2b-40
4b=220
b=55
v=70

Linear-systems/228854: I don't know how to set this up:
Bill leaves his house for Maya's house riding his bicycle at 8 miles per hour. At the same time, Maya leaves her house heading toward Bill's house walking at 3 miles per hour. Write a system of equations to represent the distance, d, each is from Maya's house in h hours. They live 8.25 miles apart. 1 solutions
Answer 169804 by edjones(7569) on 2009-10-19 19:29:30 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!st=d s=speed, t=time, d=distance
How long did it take until they met?
d=distance from Maya's house.
t=d/3 for Maya
t=(8.25-d)/8 for Bill
d/3 = (8.25-d)/8 Since the times are equal.
8d=24.75-3d Multiply each side by 24 to eliminate fractions.
11d=24.75
d=2.25 mi from Maya's house.

Permutations/227480: Mr. Wu’s biology class is writing group reports about
the Hawaiian Islands. He has a total of 10 groups.
Mr. Wu will assign an island and a topic at random
to each of the groups. No two group assignments will
be the same.
Five Islands: Hawaii, Maui, Lanai, Oahu,
or Kauai
Topics: Plant Life or
Animal Life
Linda and Kim are in different groups, but they both
want to write about Kauai. What is the probability
that both Linda’s and Kim’s groups will receive Kauai
assignments?
A.1/5
B.1/45
C.1/50
D.1/90 1 solutions

Probability-and-statistics/226299: Bob and Alice are playing Texas Hold 'Em. Bob is dealt cards 1 and 3 while Alice is dealt cards 2 and 4. Three of the five community cards are dealt (5of clubs, 6 of clubs, K of hearts). Bob has the 2 of clubs and 4of clubs.
a. What is probability that bob has a flush?
b. What is probability that bob has a straight?
c. What is probability of a straight flush?
Work:
a. Is it 25% because the next cards could be one of four choices?
b. Is the answer .5% because odds of an Ace is 1 out of 13 multiplied by odds of a 7 (1 out of 13)? 1 solutions
Answer 168577 by edjones(7569) on 2009-10-14 02:26:41 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!52-5=47 cards left to choose from since you don't know Alice's cards.
a)
13-4=9 remaining clubs
(9C1*38C1+9C2)/(47C2)
=(9*38+36)/1081 The number of possible combinations of 47 cards drawn 2 at a time is 1081.
=(342+36)/1018
=.350... probability of a flush in the next 2 cards.
.
b)
there are 4 threes that will make a straight.
(4C1*43C1 +4C2)/47C2 [combination of 1 three out of 4, times the combination of 1 of the other 43 cards, plus the combination of 2 of the threes, divided by 1018.
=(4*43 +6)/1081
=178/1081
=.165... probability of a straight in the next 2 cards.
.
c)
Only 1 card will make a straight flush, 3 of clubs.
(1C1*46C1)/47C2
=46/1081
=.0426... Probability of a straight flush in the next 2 cards.

Radicals/226003: I do not understand simplifying radicals. Could you please explain to me how to solve these kinds of problems.
I have attached a link so that you can look at the problem yourself.
http://www.teacherweb.com/GA/EvansMiddleSchool/JWard/page_514.pdf
I need explaining on questions like 36,45,46,and 48. I have not had this kind of thing explained to me at my school yet. I don't understand how to solve these problems.
Thanks so much for your time and I am sorry these are just stupid questions! (I am just not good at things like that!!) 1 solutions

Finance/225980: A jar contains 40 coins consisting of dimes and quarters and having a total value of $4.90. How many of each kind of coin are there?
I know that somehow I use .1d+.25q=$4.90 but I don't know how to add the 40 in there. Help please! 1 solutions
Answer 168427 by edjones(7569) on 2009-10-13 14:59:49 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Let d=number of dimes, q=number of quarters
d+q=40
q=40-d
.1d+.25q=4.9 good work.
.1d+.25(40-d)=4.9
.1d+10-.25d=4.9
-.15d=-5.1
d=34
q=6

Equations/225984: In the formula: 2091/x-1=1.5 the answer should be 836.4. My question is: What is the proper way to get x on the right hand side? I want to solve for x. I hope you under stand.
ex. (not correct): whatever/whatever = x
I want x on the right by itself. 1 solutions
Answer 168421 by edjones(7569) on 2009-10-13 14:44:49 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
2091-x=1.5x Multiply each side by x to eliminate the fraction.
2091=2.5x Add x to each side.
x=836.4 Divide each side by 2.5

Linear-systems/223775: Please help me with the following question:
A Straight line has the equation and it meets the axes at A and B. Find the distance of the mid-point of AB from the origin, Giving your answer in the form 1 solutions
Answer 167323 by edjones(7569) on 2009-10-08 17:55:38 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!x-2y=12
-2y=12-x
y=x/2 -6
the y intercept where x=0 is y=-6
x/2 -6=0
x/2=6
x=12
The x intercept where y=0 is x=12
.
a^2+b^2=c^2
6^2+12^2=c^2
36+144=180
sqrt(180)
=sqrt(36*5)
=6sqrt(5) length of AB
3sqrt(5) midpoint of AB
.
tan=opp/adj=12/6=2 angle opposite line from midpoint to origin.
tan^-1(2)=63.42... deg
.
Law of cosines:
a^2=b^2+c^2-2bc cos(a)
a^2=6^2+(3sqrt(5))^2-2*6*3sqrt(5)*cos(63.42...)
a^2=36+45-36sqrt(5)*cos A
=45
sqrt(45)
=sqrt(9*5)
=3sqrt(5)
