Quadratic_Equations/411127: Completing the square?
Can someone show me the steps to completing the square for this please?

- 1/5x^2 - 1/2x + 2 = 0
1 solutions

Answer 289000 by edjones(7569) About Me  on 2011-02-18 15:59:19 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
- 1/5x^2 - 1/2x + 2 = 0
x^2 + 5x/2 - 10 = 0 multiply each side by -5.
x^2 + 5x/2 + 25/16 = 10 + 25/16
(x+ 5/4)^2=185/16
x + 5/4 = +-sqrt(185)/4
x=(-5+-sqrt(185))/4
x=(-5+sqrt(185))/4, x=(-5-sqrt(185))/4

There are 3 consonants on each plate.
The consonants are used with replacement so this is a binomial expansion problem.
Probability of you consonant in the first letter is 1/21
(20/21)^3=.8638 probability that none of the letters contain your favorite.
1-.8638=.1362 the probability that your plate contains your favorite consonant.
