Money_Word_Problems/267392: I have a total of $6000 invested in two simple interest accounts. The annual simple interest rate on one account is 9%. The annual simple interest rate on the second account is 6%. How much is invested in each account if both accounts earn the same amount of interest? 1 solutions
Answer 196253 by drk(1908) on 2010-02-08 21:37:59 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!This is an I = PRT problem. we have the formula
I = PRT and another I = PRT.
From above, we get
I = x(.09)(1)
and
I = (6000-x)(.06)(1)
since interest is equal set them equal to get
.09x = 360 - .06x
adding .06x we get
.15x = 360
dividing, we get
x = 2400 at 9%
6000-x = 3600 at 6%.

Numbers_Word_Problems/267390: unit digit of a sum
11^11 + 14^14 + 16^16 whats the unit digit of this sum 1 solutions
Answer 196250 by drk(1908) on 2010-02-08 21:32:15 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Look for patterns:
11^1 = 11
11^2 = 121
11^3 = 1331
I see the pattern of ending in 1.
---
14^1 = 14
14^2 = 196
14^3 = 2744
when the power is odd it ends in 4, and when it is even it ends in 6.
---
16^1 = 16
16^2 = 256
16^3 = 4096
The units digit is always 8.
---
we get 1 + 6 + 6 = 13
The final units digit will be 3.

Quadratic-relations-and-conic-sections/267384: Find the vertex. Is the vertex a maximum or minimum point? Graph the parabola.
a(x) = x^2 -4x +4 1 solutions
Answer 196249 by drk(1908) on 2010-02-08 21:29:00 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Factoring the original equation, we get
(x-2)*(x-2)
However, that can be expressed as
(x-2)^2
SInce there is no number after the squared binomial, the vertex form of this is
y = (x-2)^2 + 0
The vertex is "opposite of the inside number, outside number"
so the vertex is (2,0)
The vertex shows us a minimum
Here is the graph

test/267380: Given y=x/(x^2+1), use the algebraic tests to determine symmetry with respect to both axes and the origin. 1 solutions
Answer 196248 by drk(1908) on 2010-02-08 21:27:06 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!To be symmetric to the x axis replace y with -y. we get
-y=x/(x^2+1)
which is
y=-x/(x^2+1)
or
f(x) - - - > -f(x)
therefore, not symmetric to the x axis
-----
To be symmetric to the y axis replace x with -x. we get
y = -x/(x^2+1)
or
f(x) - - -> -f(x)
therefore, not symmetric to the x axis
-----
To be symmetric to the origin replace x with -x AND y with -y. we get
-y=-x/(x^2+1)
which is
y=x/(x^2+1)
f(x) - - - -> f(x)
Therefore, symmetric to origin.

Find all of the zeros of the function:
I know how to figure out how many positive and negative zeros, but I don't understand how to figure out how many imaginary zeros. Then I don't know how to find all of the zeros. 1 solutions
Answer 196176 by drk(1908) on 2010-02-08 17:07:13 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
first we use a technique called P-N-I This gives us the positive negative and imaginary zero combinations
P . . . N . . . I
3 . . . 1 . . . 0
1 . . . .1 . . . 2
So, I see that we must have 1 negative root somewhere.
Next I apply synthetic division to get roots.
-1 // 1 . . . . -15 . . . . 70 . . . . -70 . . . . -156
. . . . . . . . . . .-1 . . . . 16 . . . . .-86 . . . . 156
. . . . .1 . . . . .-16 . . . 86 . . . . .-156 . . . .0
and then
6// 1 . . . . -16 . . . . 86 . . . . -156
. . . . . . . . . . 6 . . . . -60 . . . .156
. . . . .1 . . . -10 . . . 26 . . . . .0
So we know that -1 and 6 are roots.
Now we can factor x^2 - 10x + 26 using the quadratic as

and then

which gives us imaginary answers of

-----
So, in total we have the following roots:
-6, 6, and 5 +-i

Answer 196162 by drk(1908) on 2010-02-08 16:19:18 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!This is an RTD problem. Here is a table based on the given information
rowing . . . . . . . rate . . . . . . . . . time . . . . . . . . . . distance
upriver. . . . . . . .r -c. . . . . . . . . . 2.5. . . . . . . . . . . . 7.5
downriver. . . . . .r + c. . . . . . . . . .1.5 . . . . . . . . . . . 7.5
total. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
rate x time = distance. The distance are equal, so the rate x time parts are also equal. We get

and

we get

adding down, we get

Graphs/267126: Taking an on-line class and cannot find any examples of this in my book and I am at a loss. I can sketch graphs like 3x-2y =6, but I don't know how to solve and sketch greater than, less than, and greater than/less than equal to problems. Thank you.
Sketch the graph of 9 + 2y >= 5. (9 + 2 y greather than/equal to 5)
1 solutions
Answer 196105 by drk(1908) on 2010-02-08 12:50:57 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Here are the general steps:
(1) solve for y.
* remember the negative 1 rule - if you multiply or divide by a negative, you reverse the inequality sign.
(2) if you see y > or y >= then shade up or away from you.
(3) if you see y < or y <= then shade down or toward you.
(4) If you see =, then draw a sold line
(5) if you do not see = , then draw a dashed (dotted) line.
That should help.
----
Sketch the graph of 9x + 2y >= 5. (9x + 2 y greater than/equal to 5)
step 1 - solve for y as
y >= (-9/2)x + (5/2)
step 2 - slope = (-9/2), y intercept = (5/2). Plot y intercept and then create a second dot with the slope.
step 3 - draw solid line because =.
step 4 - shade up and away because of >.
