You can put this solution on YOUR website! One third of the supplement of an angle added to the complement of an angle is 86. Find the measure of the angle, its complement, and its supplement.
Step 1. Supplementary angles means two angles add up to 180 degrees.
Step 2. Complementary angles means two angles add up to 90 degrees.
Step 3. Let x be the angle, let 180-x be its supplementary angle, and let 90-x be its complementary angle.
Step 4. Let be one third of the supplementary angle.
Step 5. Then the statement one third of the supplement of an angle added to the complement of an angle is 86 and translated as
Multiplying 3 to both sides of the equations to get rid of the denominator
Add 4x-258 to both sides of the equation to prepare in solving for x
Divide by 4 to both sides of the equatiion
Then 180-x=132 and 90-x=42
Check... if true. Then ...which is a true statement.

Probability-and-statistics/215725: What is the sum of the probabilities of all the outcomes in a sample space? 1 solutions
Answer 162992 by drj(1380) on 2009-09-22 18:32:36 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! What is the sum of the probabilities of all the outcomes in a sample space?
The answer is 1.
For example, a coin has two possible outcomes: heads or tails.
Probability of heads is 1/2 and probability of tails is 1/2 for one toss. 1/2+1/2=1.
Another example: consider six-headed die where each face has a probability of 1/6 for a single toss. But all the outcomes is added to 1 since its sum is 6*(1/6)=1.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!Solve the sytem of equation.
9x-8y=-16
8y-9x=16
Is the system consistent or inconsistent? Consistent since both equations will give the same answer which is many solutions in this example. No contradictiion takes place since both equations are really the same as described below.
Are the equations independent or dependent? The second equation is just the negative of the first equation because adding those equations leads to 0=0. So they are dependent.

Geometry_Word_Problems/215723: Can you please explain how I can solve this problem?
The legnth of a rectangle is 5ft more than its width. If the perimeter is 70ft, find the dimension. 1 solutions
Answer 162968 by drj(1380) on 2009-09-22 17:07:53 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The length of a rectangle is 5ft more than its width. If the perimeter is 70ft, find the dimension.
Step 1. Let w be the width and w+5 be the length.
Step 2. Perimeter P means that we add up all the lengths of the four sides.
Step 3. Then we have
Subtract 10 from both sides of the equation
Divide 4 to both sides of the equation
With w=15, then w+5=20. Check perimeter...P=15+15+20+20=70 which is a true statement.
Step 4. ANSWER. The width is 15 ft and the length is 20 ft.

Average/215682: if the average of six numbers is 18 and the average of three of the numbers is 15 then what is the sum of the remaining three numbers
1 solutions
Answer 162962 by drj(1380) on 2009-09-22 17:02:26 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! If the average of six numbers is 18 and the average of three of the numbers is 15 then what is the sum of the remaining three numbers.
Step 1. Let y=3x be the sum of the remaining numbers where x is the average of the three numbers.
Step 2. Let 3*15 be the sum of the other three numbers or 45.
Step 3. 18=(45+y)/6 since the average of six numbers is 18 and the average of three of the numbers is 15. Solving for y yields the following steps:
Multiply by 6 to both sides of the equation to get rid of denominator.
Subtract 45 from both sides of the equation

You can put this solution on YOUR website! How long will it take to drive 47 miles at 25 miles per hour?
Step 1. distance = speed * time OR time =distance/speed.
Step 2. time =47 miles/25 miles per hour = 1.88 hours.
Step 3. Convert 1.88 hours into hours and minutes. 1 hour = 60 minutes. Then, 1.88 hours = 1 hour + 0.88 hour*60 minutes/hour = 1 hour and 53 minutes.

Answer 162893 by drj(1380) on 2009-09-22 11:17:32 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! What is the y intercept of the points (1, 202) and (4, 382)?
Step 1. We need to find an equation in slope intercept form given as y=mx+b where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept at point (0,b).
Step 2. The slope of the line m is given as
where for our example is x1=1, y1=202, x2=4 and y2=382 (think of ). You can choose the points the other way around but be consistent with the x and y coordinates. You will get the same result.
Step 3. Substituting the above values in the slope equation gives
Step 4. The slope is calculated as 60 or m=60.
Step 5. Now use the slope equation of step 1 and choose one of the given points. I'll choose point (1,202). Letting y=y2 and x=x2 and substituting m=60 in the slope equation given as,
Step 6. Multiply both sides of equation by x-1 to get rid of denomination found on the right side of the equation
Step 7. Now simplify and put the above equation into slope-intercept form.
Add 202 to both sides of the equation
 ANSWER in slope-intercept form. m=60 and y-intercept=142
Step 8. See if the other point (4, 382) or x=4 and y=382 satisfies this equation
{{382=382}}} So the point (4,382) satisfies the equation and is on the line. In other words, you can use the other point to check your work.
Note: above equation can be also be transform into standard form as

- Y intercept is found by setting x to 0: the equation becomes by=c, and therefore y = c/b. Y intercept is 142/1 = 142.
- Slope is --60/1 = 60.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! The measure of an angle is 36 degrees less than the measure of its supplement. What is the measure of the angle and its supplement.
Step 1. Supplementary angles means that two angles add up to 180 degrees.
Step 2. Let x be the angle and 180-x be the supplement.
Step 3. Then x=180-x-36 since the measure of an angle is 36 degrees less than the measure of its supplement. Solving yields the following steps
Add x to both sides of the equation to get
Divide 2 to both sides of the equation
and where x is 36 degrees less than its supplement of 108 degrees.
Step 4. ANSWER: The angle is 72 degrees and its supplement is 108 degrees.
I hope the above steps were helpful.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! After taking 4 quizzes, your average is 76 out of 100. What must your average score be on the next five quizzes to increase your average to 81?
Step 1. Let x be the average of the next five quizzes.
Step 2. Let 4*76 be the 4 quizzes with each quiz having a score of 76 so the average of the four quizzes is 76.
Step 3. There will be a total of 9 quizzes.
Step 4. The average of nine quizzes is . Solve for x as follow
Multiply 9 to both sides of equation to get rid of denominator
Subtract 304 to both sides of equation to get 5x on the right side
Divide by 5 to both sides of equation to solve for x
Step 5. ANSWER: To get an overall average of 81, the next five quizzes must average 85.
I hope the above steps were helpful.
