You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Solve: %2810%29%2F%28a-7%29+=+%28-4%29%2F%28a%2B4%29

Step 1. Multiply by (a-7)(a+4) to both sides of the equation to get rid of denominators.

%2810%29%28a-7%29%28a%2B4%29%2F%28a-7%29+=+%28-4%29%28a-7%29%28a%2B4%29%2F%28a%2B4%29

10%28a%2B4%29=-4%28a-7%29

10a%2B40=-4a%2B28

Step 2. Add 4a-40 to both sides of the equation to get numbers on one side and variables on the other side.

10a%2B40%2B4a-40=-4a%2B28%2B4a-40

14a=-12

Step 3. Divide by 14 to both sides of the equation to get a.

14a%2F14=-12%2F14

a=-12%2F14

a=-6%2F7

Step 4. Check solution with original equation %2810%29%2F%28a-7%29+=+%28-4%29%2F%28a%2B4%29 to see if it leads to a true statement.

%2810%29%2F%28-6%2F7-7%29+=+%28-4%29%2F%28-6%2F7%2B4%29

10%2F%28%28-6-49%29%2F7%29=%28-4%29%2F%28%28-6%2B28%29%2F7%29

10%2F%28-55%2F7%29=%28-4%29%2F%2822%2F7%29

-70%2F55=-28%2F22

-14%2F11=-14%2F11 which is a true statement.

Step 5. ANSWER is a=-6%2F7

I hope the above steps were helpful.

Linear-equations/225852: Find the inverse of the given function:
f(x)= 3x + 13
1 solutions

Answer 168367 by drj(1380) About Me  on 2009-10-13 09:28:26 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Find the inverse of the given function:
f(x)= 3x + 13

Step 1. Let f(x)=y, then y=3x+13. Now solve for x.

Step 2. Subtract 13 from both sides of the equation

y-13=3x%2B13-13

y-13=3x

Step 3. Divide by 3 to both sides of the equation

%28y-13%29%2F3=3x%2F3

%28y-13%29%2F3=x=g%28y%29 where g(y) is the inverse function

Step 4. ANSWER the inverse is g%28y%29=%28y-13%29%2F3

So check answer with following g%28f%28x%29=x%29 where we substitute f(x) into g(y). Then, g%28f%28x%29%29=%28%283x%2B13%29-13%29%2F3=%283x%29%2F3=x which is true that g%28f%28x%29%29=x.

25y%5E2%2B20y%2B4=0

Step 1. Use quadratic formula given below to solve problem.

x+=+%28-b+%2B-+sqrt%28+b%5E2-4%2Aa%2Ac+%29%29%2F%282%2Aa%29+

where a=25, b=20 and c=4.

Solved by pluggable solver: SOLVE quadratic equation with variable
Quadratic equation ax%5E2%2Bbx%2Bc=0 (in our case 25x%5E2%2B20x%2B4+=+0) has the following solutons:

x%5B12%5D+=+%28b%2B-sqrt%28+b%5E2-4ac+%29%29%2F2%5Ca

For these solutions to exist, the discriminant b%5E2-4ac should not be a negative number.

First, we need to compute the discriminant b%5E2-4ac: b%5E2-4ac=%2820%29%5E2-4%2A25%2A4=0.

Discriminant d=0 is zero! That means that there is only one solution: x+=+%28-%2820%29%29%2F2%5C25.
Expression can be factored: 25x%5E2%2B20x%2B4+=+25%28x--0.4%29%2A%28x--0.4%29

Again, the answer is: -0.4, -0.4. Here's your graph:

Answer 168275 by drj(1380) About Me  on 2009-10-12 18:22:41 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Find 2 consecutive integers such that three times the square of the first is equal to seven more than five times the second.
What is the answer?

Step 1. Let n be the first integer.

Step 2. Let n%2B1 be the next consecutive integer

Step 3. Let 3n%5E2 be three times the square of the first.

Step 4. Let 7%2B5%28n%2B1%29 be seven more than five times the second.

Step 5. Then 3n%5E2=7%2B5%28n%2B1%29 since three times the square of the first is equal to seven more than five times the second.

Step 6. Solving the equation in Step 5 yields the following steps.

3n%5E2=7%2B5%28n%2B1%29

3n%5E2=7%2B5n%2B5=12%2B5n

Subtract 5n+12 from both sides of the equation

3n%5E2-5n-12=12%2B5n-5n-12

3n%5E2-5n-12=0

Step 7. To solve use the quadratic equation given as

x+=+%28-b+%2B-+sqrt%28+b%5E2-4%2Aa%2Ac+%29%29%2F%282%2Aa%29+

where a=3, b=-5, and c=-12

Solved by pluggable solver: SOLVE quadratic equation with variable
Quadratic equation ax%5E2%2Bbx%2Bc=0 (in our case 1x%5E2%2B-2x%2B-3+=+0) has the following solutons:

x%5B12%5D+=+%28b%2B-sqrt%28+b%5E2-4ac+%29%29%2F2%5Ca

For these solutions to exist, the discriminant b%5E2-4ac should not be a negative number.

First, we need to compute the discriminant b%5E2-4ac: b%5E2-4ac=%28-2%29%5E2-4%2A1%2A-3=16.

Discriminant d=16 is greater than zero. That means that there are two solutions: +x%5B12%5D+=+%28--2%2B-sqrt%28+16+%29%29%2F2%5Ca.

x%5B1%5D+=+%28-%28-2%29%2Bsqrt%28+16+%29%29%2F2%5C1+=+3
x%5B2%5D+=+%28-%28-2%29-sqrt%28+16+%29%29%2F2%5C1+=+-1

Quadratic expression 1x%5E2%2B-2x%2B-3 can be factored:
1x%5E2%2B-2x%2B-3+=+1%28x-3%29%2A%28x--1%29

With n=3 then n+1=4. Check 3n%5E2=7%2B5%28n%2B1%29 if true so 3%2A3%5E2=7%2B5%2A4 or 27=27 which is a true statement.

With n=-1 then n+1=0 Check 3n%5E2=7%2B5%28n%2B1%29 if true so 3%2A%28-1%29%5E2=7%2B5%2A0 or 3=7 which is not a true statement.

Please help me identify the system as consistent or inconsistent, and dependent or independent.

3x=y+3 Equation 1
6x-2y=3 Equation 2

Step 1. Equation 1 in slope-intercept form is y=3x-3. It has a slope m=3.

Step 2. We can put Equation 2 in slope-intercept form as follows:

Subtract 6x from both sides of the equation

6x-2y-6x=3-6x

-2y=-6x%2B3

Divide by -2 to both sides of the equation

-2y%2F-2=-6x%2F-2%2B3%2F-2

y=3x-3%2F2

So this equation has a slope m=3. Since the equations of lines have the same slope they are in parallel and cannot intersect.

Step 3. The equations are inconsistent since they have the same slope and they are also independent (one equation is not a multiple of another).

I hope the above steps and explanation were helpful.

Coordinate-system/225491: Find The Equation Of The Line That Passes Through (4,6) And Is Parallel To The Line That Passes Through (6,-6) And (10,-4)?
1 solutions

Answer 168230 by drj(1380) About Me  on 2009-10-12 16:55:53 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Find The Equation Of The Line That Passes Through (4,6) And Is Parallel To The Line That Passes Through (6,-6) And (10,-4)?

Step 1. We'll put the equation of the line in slope-intercept form is given as y=mx+b where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept when x=0 or at point (0,b). Also we know that parallel lines have the same slope. So let's find the slope of the line passing through the point (6,-6) and (10,-4)

Given two points (x1,y1) and (x2,y2), then the slope m is given as

m=%28y2-y1%29%2F%28x2-x1%29=%28-4-%28-6%29%29%2F%2810-6%29=2%2F4=1%2F2

Step 2. Now we have to find the line with slope m=1%2F2 going through point (4,6).

Step 3. As mentioned earlier, given two points (x1,y1) and (x2,y2), then the slope m is given as

m=%28y2-y1%29%2F%28x2-x1%29

Step 4. Let (x1,y1)=(4,6) or x1=4 and y1=6. Let other point be (x2,y2)=(x,y) or x2=x and y2=y.

Step 5. Now we're given m=1%2F2. Substituting above values and variables in the slope equation m yields the following steps:

m=%28y2-y1%29%2F%28x2-x1%29

1%2F2=%28y-6%29%2F%28x-4%29

Step 6. Multiply x-4 to both sides to get rid of denominator on right side of equation.

%28x-4%29%2F2=y-6

x%2F2-2=y-6

Step 7. Add 6 to both sides of the equation

x%2F2-2%2B6=y-6%2B6

x%2F2%2B4=y

Step 7. ANSWER: The equation in slope-intercept form is y=x%2F2%2B4 where the slope m=1%2F2 and the y-intercept b=4.

Note: the above equation can be rewritten in standard form as

-x%2B2y=8

And the graph is shown below which is consistent with the above steps.

Solved by pluggable solver: DESCRIBE a linear EQUATION: slope, intercepts, etc
Equation -1+x+%2B+2+y+=+8 describes a sloping line. For any
equation ax+by+c = 0, slope is -a%2Fb+=+--1%2F2.
  • X intercept is found by setting y to 0: ax+by=c becomes ax=c. that means that x = c/a. 8/-1 = -8.
  • Y intercept is found by setting x to 0: the equation becomes by=c, and therefore y = c/b. Y intercept is 8/2 = 4.
  • Slope is --1/2 = 0.5.
  • Equation in slope-intercept form: y=0.5*x+4.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Please help me tell whether the lines are "parallel,perpendicular,or neither". f(x)=y

f(x)=2x-4 or y=2x-4 where y=f(x)
8x+4f(x)=8 or 4y=-8x-8 where y=f(x)

Step 1. Line are parallel when they have the same slope and lines are perpendicular when the product of the slopes between the two lines is -1 or m1*m2=-1 where m1 is the slope of the first line and m2 is the slope of the perpendicular line.

Step 2. Let's put the equations in slope intercept form where y=mx+b where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept when x=0 or at point (0,b)

Step 3. Here, y=2x-4 is in slope intercept form so it has a slope of 2.

Step 4. Now 4y=8x-8 can be put in slope intercept form where we can divide by 4 to both sides of the equation giving y=-2x-2. So the slope is -2.

Step 5. The slopes in Step 3 and 4 are not equal so it's not parallel and their product is not -1 so they are not perpendicular.

Step 6. ANSWER: Based on the Steps 3-5, the lines are neither parallel nor perpendicular.

I hope the above steps were helpful.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Find the equation of the line that has a slope of -8 and passes through the point (-1,-5) write the equation in standard form.

Step 1. The slope-intercept form is given as y=mx+b where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept when x=0 or at point (0,b). From the slope intercept form we can derive the standard form given as Ax+By=C where A, B, and C are constants. Now, let's find the equation of the line in slope-intercept form

Step 2. Here, we have to find the line with slope m=-8 going through point (-1,-5).

Step 3. Given two points (x1,y1) and (x2,y2), then the slope m is given as

m=%28y2-y1%29%2F%28x2-x1%29

Step 4. Let (x1,y1)=(-1,-5) or x1=-1 and y1=-5. Let other point be (x2,y2)=(x,y) or x2=x and y2=y.

Step 5. Now we're given m=-8. Substituting above values and variables in the slope equation m yields the following steps:

m=%28y2-y1%29%2F%28x2-x1%29

-8=%28y-%28-5%29%29%2F%28x-%28-1%29%29=%28y%2B5%29%2F%28x%2B1%29

Step 6. Multiply x+1 to both sides to get rid of denominator on right side of equation.

-8%28x%2B1%29=y%2B5

-8x-8=y%2B5

Step 7. Add -5 to both sides of the equation

-8x-8%2B%28-5%29=y%2B5%2B%28-5%29

-8x-13=y

Step 7. The equation in slope-intercept form is y=-8x-13 where the slope m=-8 and the y-intercept b=-13.

Note: the above equation can be rewritten in standard form by adding 8x to both sides of the equation.

-8x-13%2B8x=y%2B8x

8x%2By=-13

Step 8. ANSWER: The equation of the line in standard form is 8x%2By=-13.

How do I solve and graph for x intercept and y intercept the following equation: y = -x ? Thanks!!

Step 1. The slope-intercept form is given as y=mx+b where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept when x=0 or at point (0,b).

Step 2. Comparing y=-1 with y=mb%2Bb we have the slope m=-1 and b=0.

Step 3. To graph to get the y-intercept we set x=0 and in this case y=b=0.

Step 4. To get the x-intercept we set y=0 and again in this case x=0. So we have (0,0) as a point. Since the x-intercept and y-intercept are the same then we need another point. Say at x=1 then y=-1 so (1,-1) is a point on the line. We can use these two points (0,0) and (1,-1) to plot the line.

Step 5. Another way to graph: With the slope m=-1 then for every unit you go to the right you go one unit down. You get the same result (1,-1) or from (1,-1) you get (2,-2) as another point on the line.

Step 6. Here's the graph,

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Angles A and B are supplementary angles and angle A is 2⁰ more than 4 times angle B. Find the measures of angle A and angle B.

Step 1. Supplementary angles means two angles add up to 180 degrees.

Step 2. Let A be one angle.

Step 3. Let B=180-A be its supplementary angle.

Step 4. Let A=2+4(180-A) since angle A is 2 degrees more than 4 times angle B=180-A.
