Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/214275: I know the answer to the problem, 8 boxes of ball points and 4 boxes of felt tips, but I am unsure of how to write the equation so that it makes sense.
Here is the word Problem:
Will ordered 2 times as many boxes of ballpoint pens as boxes of felt tip pens. Ballpoint pens cost $3.50 per box, and felt tip pens cost $4.50 per box. If Will's order of pens totaled $46.00, how many boxes of each type of pen did he buy. 1 solutions
Answer 161835 by checkley77(12569) on 2009-09-16 19:40:31 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!b=2f
3.50b+4.50f=46.00
3.50*2f+4.50f=46.00
7.00f+4.50f=46.00
11.50f=46.00
f=46.00/11.50
f=4 boxes of felt tip pens were bought.
b=2*4=8 boxes of ball point pens were bought.
Proof:
3.50*8+4.50*4=46.00
28+18=46.00
46=46

Angles/214232: This question is from textbook elementary algebra
The sum of the measure of an angle and three times its complement is 202. Find the measure of the angle.
***** this is how I set it up as ..... x= sum 3(90-x) = 202 x + 3(90-x) = 202 1 solutions
Answer 161831 by checkley77(12569) on 2009-09-16 19:30:41 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!x+3(90-x)=202
x+270-3x=202
-2x=202-270
-2x=-68
x=-68/-2
x=34 degrees for the smaller angle.
90-34=56 degrees for the larger angle.
Proof:
34+3*56=202
34+168=202
202=202

You can put this solution on YOUR website!Y=mX+b
-2=1*4+b
-2=4+b
b=-2-4
b=-6 the y intercept.
y=x-6
 (graph 300x200 pixels, x from -6 to 7, y from -10 to 10, x -6).
---------------------------------------------------------
No slope:
y=-6
 (graph 300x200 pixels, x from -6 to 7, y from -10 to 10, y = -6).
-----------------------------------------------------------
(3,-3) slope=2
-3=-2*3+b
-3=-6+b
b=-3+6
b=3 y intercept.
y=2x+3 (red line)
----------------------------------
Perpendicular line through (4,4)
Perpendicular line will have a slope=-1/2
4=-1/2*4+b
4=-2+b
b=4+2
b=6
y=-x/2+6 (green line)
 (graph 300x300 pixels, x from -6 to 10, y from -6 to 10, of TWO functions 2x +3 and -x/2 +6).

32. The longest cable suspension bridge in the world is the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge in Japan. It has one long span and two short spans. Each short span is half the length of the long span. The total length of the bridge is 3560m.
What is the length of each span? 1 solutions
Answer 161649 by checkley77(12569) on 2009-09-15 21:41:52 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!.5x+1x+.5x=3,560
2x=3,560
x=3,560/2
x=1,780 m. is the length of the long span.
1,780/2=890 m. is the length of the 2 shorter spans.
Proof:
890+1,780+890=3,560
3,560=3,560

You can put this solution on YOUR website!3 square roots of two ninths + one half the square root of 32 + nine eights.
3SQRT(2/9)+1/2SQRT(32)+9/8
3/3SQRT2+1/2*4SQRT2+9/8
1SQRT2+2SQRT2+9/8
3SQRT2+9/8 ANS.

Travel_Word_Problems/213770: This question is from textbook Structure and Method Book 1
An ultra light aircraft flies to a nearby town that is 20 miles away in 2/5 hour with a tail wind. It can fly back home again when fighting a head wind in 1/2 hour. Find the air speed of the ultra light aircraft and the wind speed. Check your answer 1 solutions

You can put this solution on YOUR website!D=RT
20=R*.4
20=.4R
R=20/.4
R=50 MPH. WITH THE WIND.
20R=R*.5
.5R=20
R=20/.5
R=40 MPH. AGAINST THE WIND.
(50-40)/2=10/2=5 MPH IS THE SPEED OF THE WIND.
PROOF:
50-5=45 MPH SPEED OF THE ULTRA LIGHT.
40+5=45 MPH DITTO.

Rectangles/213775: Ok, this problem wasted 3 hours of my precious college life. Problem: I want to expand my present 25x15ft garden by planting a border of flowers around it. border is the same width around the entire garden. the flowers will cover an area of 624 sq.ft. how wide should the border be. all I need is an algebraic formula, I want to work the rest of the problem out on my own. thanks 1 solutions
Answer 161498 by checkley77(12569) on 2009-09-15 10:34:38 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!25*15=375 FT^2 I THE GARDEN SIZE.
(25+2X)(15+2X)=375+624
375+30X+50X+4X^2=999
4X^2+80X+375-999=0
4X^2+80X-624=0
4(X^2+20X-156)=0
4(X+26)(X-6)=0
X-6=0
X=6 FT. IS THE WIDTH OF THE BORDER.
PROOF:
(25+12)(15+12)=999
37*27=999
999=999

Angles/213511: This question is from textbook Holt Texas Geometry
Find the value of the variable and the measure of each angle.
(4x^2-6) degrees + (-2x^2+19x) degrees = straight line (180 degrees) 1 solutions
Answer 161356 by checkley77(12569) on 2009-09-14 18:16:42 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!(4x^2-6)+(-2x^2+19x)=180
4x^2-6-2x^2+19x-180=0
2x^2+19x-186=0
(2x+31)(x-6)=0
x-6=0
x=6
4*6^2-6=4*36-6=138 ans.
-2*6^2+19*6=-2*36+114=-72+114=42 ans.
Proof:
138+42=180
180=180
