A plane flies 400 miles with the wind and 300 miles against the wind in the same length of time. If the speed of the wind is 22 mph, what is the speed of the plane in still air? 1 solutions
Answer 213402 by checkley77(12569) on 2010-04-24 19:05:05 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!D=RT
400=(R+22)T WITH THE WIND.
400=RT+22T
300=(R-22)T AGAINST THE WIND.
300=RT-22T
400=RT+22T SUBTRACT
-----------------
-100=-44T
-44T=-100
T=-100/-44
T=2.27 HOURS FOR THE TRIP.
400=(R+22)2.27
400=2.27R+49.94
2.27R=400-49.94
2.27R=350.06
R=350.06/2.27
R=154.21 MPH FOR THE PLANE IN STILL AIR.
PROOF:
300=(154.21-22)*2.27
300=132.21*2.27
300=300

Travel_Word_Problems/296015: Train A and B are traveling in the same direction on parallel tracks. Train A is traveling at 40 mph and B is traveling 48 mph. Train A passes the station at 7:15 a.m. If train B passes the same station at 7:45 a.m.,at what time will train B catch up to train A? 1 solutions
Answer 213394 by checkley77(12569) on 2010-04-24 18:20:44 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!D=RT
D=40T FOR THE A TRAIN.
D=48(T-.5) FOR THE B TRAIN.
BECAUSE THE DISTANCES ARE EQUAL WE SET THE 2 EQUATIONS EQUAL
40T=48(T-.5)
40T=48T-24
40T-48T=-24
8T=24
T=24/8
T=3 HOURS AFTER TRAIN A LEAVES THE STATION, TRAIN B WILL CATCH TRAIN A.
PROOF:
40*3=48(3-.5)
120=48*2.5
120=120

Mixture_Word_Problems/296016: Soybean meal is 12% protein; cornmeal is 6% protein. How many pounds of each should be mixed together in order to get 240-lb mixture that is 11% protein? 1 solutions
Answer 213388 by checkley77(12569) on 2010-04-24 18:02:27 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!.12x+.06(240-x)=240*.11
.12x+14.4-.06x=26.4
.06x=26.4-14.4
.06x=12
x=12/.06
x=200 lb. of soybeans is needed.
240-200=40 lb. of cornmeal is needed.
Proof:
.12*200+.06*40=240*.11
24+2.4=2.64
2.64=2.64

Numbers_Word_Problems/294980: Find two consecutive even integers such that the sum of the first and the reciprocal of the second is 9/4.
This problem we are to come up with the formula and write it out as if we were teaching someone how to do it.
So far I think it should look like this (but not really sure):
1/x+1/x+1=9/4. If I am going in the right direction, I can complete the problem. Im just not sure this is how to set it up. 1 solutions
Answer 212654 by checkley77(12569) on 2010-04-21 19:08:48 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!1/x+1/x+1=9/4
-----------------
Let x & (x+2) be the 2 consecutive EVEN integers.
The reciprocal of the second integer is 1/(x+2)
x+1/(x+2)=9/4
Find the common denominator for the left side terms.
[x(x+2)+1]/(x+2)=9/4
[x^2+2x+1)/(x+2)=9/4
Cross multiply.
4(x^2+2x+1)=9(x+2)
4x^2+8x+4=9x+18
4x^2+8x-9x+4-18=0
4x^2-x-14=0
(4x+7)(x-2)=0
x-2=0
x=2 ans. for the first even integer.
2+2=4 ans. for the second even integer.
Proof:
2+1/(2+2)=9/4
2+1/4=9/4
8/4+1/4=9/4
9/4=9/4

You can put this solution on YOUR website!.0725X+.054(12,000-X)=730
.0725X+648-.054X=730
.0185X=730-648
.0185X=82
X=82/.0185
X=$4,432.43 AMOUNT INVESTED @ 7.25%.
12,000-4,432.43=$7,567.57 AMOUNT INVESTED @ 5.4%.
PROOF:
.0725*4,432.43+.054*7,567.57=730
321.35+408.65=730
730=730
