Graphs/140722: i need to graph Can I use f(x)=mx+b? The is throwing me off, can you help? 1 solutions
Answer 102445 by checkley77(12569) on 2008-05-08 20:23:17 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Thank you for this answer. Can you explain how to get data points to graph from
this equation? I promise I am not being intentionally dense.
To get any points to graph all you have to do is set x to any value & saolve for y [f(x)]
example:
let x=1
-3*1^2+1-5
-3*1+1-5
-3+1-5=-7 the y value when x=1 or (1,-7)
let x=-2
-3*-2^2-2-5
-3*4-2-5
-12-2-5=-19 the y value for x-=2 (-2,-19)
hope this helps
---------------------------------------------------
f(x)=-3x^2+x-5
 (graph 300x200 pixels, x from -6 to 5, y from -25 to 10, -3x^2 +x -5).

Radicals/140741: This question is from textbook
I need help solving the proportion X/X^2+4=7/5x. please and thank you 1 solutions
Answer 102444 by checkley77(12569) on 2008-05-08 20:20:07 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!YOU SHOULD USE ( ) IN THESE TYPE OF EQUATIONS BECAUSE THERE ARE MULTIPLE WAYS OF INTERPRETING THEM AS YOU CAN SEE BELOW.
--------------------------------------------
X/X^2+4=7/5x.
IF THIS EQUATION IS:
X/(X^2+4)=(7/5X) THEN:
7(X^2+4)=5X^2
7X^2+28-5X^2=0
2X^2=28
X^2=28/2
X62=14
X=SQRT14
X=3.74 ANSWER.
-----------------------------------
IF THIS EQUATION IS
(X/X^2)+4=7X/5 THEN:
(1/X)+4=7X/5
(1+4X)/X=7X/5
X*7X=5(1+4X)
7X^2=5+20X
7X^2-20X-5=0
USING THE QUADRATIC EQUATION WE GET:
X=3.09 & X=-.231
-------------------------------------------
IF THE EQUATUON IS:
X/(X^2+4)=7X/5 THEN:
7X(X^2+4)=5X
7X^3+28X-5X=0
7X^3+23X=0
X(7X+23)=0
X=0 ANSWER.
7X+23=0
7X=-23
X=-23/7 ANSWER.

Equations/140738: i know how to do equations the easy way, for example, one of my questions is- k divided by negative 5 equals negative 5. so k=1 because 1 times negative 5 equals -5. but my teacher wants me to show my work the mathematical way, but we had a sub today who did not explain to me well at all the mathematical way. so can you help me? Thank so very much for your time.

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/140735: The sum of the squares of two consecutive negative integers is 100. Find the integers. (I got the answer but i don't know how to solve it, I did guess and check) 1 solutions
Answer 102425 by checkley77(12569) on 2008-05-08 16:35:56 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!thnks but I got 8 and 13
--------------------------------------------
Can't be the correct answers because they are not consecutive integers and they don't work in the proof:
8^2+13^2=64+169=233 not 100.
-------------------------------------------
(-x)^2+(-x+1)^2=100
x^2+x^2-2x+1=100
2x^2-2x+1-100=0
x^2-2x-99=0
using the quadratic equation we get:
x=(2+-sqrt[-2^2-4*2*-99])/2*2
x=(2+-sqrt[4+792)/4
x=(2+-sqrt796)/4
x=(2+-28.2)/4
x=(2-28.2)/4
x=-26.2/4
x=-6.55 answer.
-6.55+1=-5.55 answer.

Matrices-and-determiminant/140708: SOLVE USING THE SQUARE ROOT PROPERTY:
-2(x-2)^2= -6
HERE I'M CONFUSED ON WHAT ALL TO SQUARE??? DO I SQUARE EVERTHING ON THE RIGHT OR WHAT PLEASE HELP AS SOON AS YOU CAN... TAHNKS 1 solutions
Answer 102423 by checkley77(12569) on 2008-05-08 16:13:30 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!-2(x-2)^2=-6
divide both sides by -2
(x-2)^2=-6/-2
(x-2)^2=3
now take the square root of both sides
x-2=sqrt3
x=sqrt3+2
x=1.73+2
x=3.73 answer.

Matrices-and-determiminant/140728: SOLVE BY COMPETING THE SQUARE:
x^2-6x+12=0
PLEASE HELP... I KNOW HOW TO USE THE QUADRATIC FORMULA... BUT I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO DO THE COMPLETING THE SQUARE... 1 solutions
Answer 102419 by checkley77(12569) on 2008-05-08 15:51:24 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!x^2-6x+12=0
FIRST REMIOVE THE 12 OVER TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE = SIGN.
X^2-6X=12
NOW CALCULATE THE NUMBER TO COMPLETE THE SQUARE.
(6/2)^2=3^2=9 WHICH IS THE MISSING TERM THAT MUST BE ADDED TO EACH SIDE OF THE EQUATION
X^2-6X+9=12+9
(X-3)^2=21
TAKE THE SQUARE ROOT OF BOTH SIDES
X-3=SQRT21
ADD 3 TO BOTH SIDES
X=SQRT21+3
X=4.58+3
X=7.58 ANSWER.

Linear-equations/140674: I need some assistance, please show me how to graph this equation.
4x-1=3x+15
This is the formula that I came up with in answer to a word problem. I worked it out and came up with x=16. I then graphed it as a strait line by coming up with various points for y. The problem was sent back as needing to be revised. The equation and answer was fine. This is the comment they made:
The algebraic solution is correct.
To solve the equation graphically, notice that it is made up of two functions, y=4x-1 and y=3x+15.
The solution is at the intersection of these two lines.
Be sure to show the intersection on the graph.
Can anyone tell me how to do this, there are more problems like this coming up and I want to get them right the first time. 1 solutions
Answer 102386 by checkley77(12569) on 2008-05-08 08:23:42 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!The proper equations for these 2 lines are;
y=4x-1 (red line)
y=3x+15 (green line)
 (graph 300x200 pixels, x from -6 to 25, y from -10 to 80, of TWO functions 4x -1 and 3x +15).
