The length of a rectangle is 2 ft longer than the width. If the area is 16 ft^2, then what are the length and width? 1 solutions
Answer 55062 by checkley75(3666) on 2007-04-03 10:47:40 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!x(x+2)=16
x^2+2x-16=0
using the quadratic equation we get:
X=(-2+-SQRT[2^2-4*1*-16])/2*1
X=(-2+-SQRT[4+64])/2
X=(-2+-SQRT68)/2
X=(-2+-8.246)/2
X=(-2+8.246)/2
X=6.246/2
X=3.123 ANSWER FOR THE SHORT SIDE.
3.123+2=5.123 ANSWER FOR THE LONG SIDE.
PROOF
3.123*5.123=16
16=16

Mixture_Word_Problems/76674: A chemist needs 130 milliliters of a 65% solution but has only 56% and 95% solutions available. Find how many millimeters of each that should be mixed to get the desired solution. 1 solutions
Answer 55017 by checkley75(3666) on 2007-04-02 16:13:42 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!.56X+.95(130-X)=130*.65
.56X+123.5-.95X=84.5
.56X-.95X=84.5-123.5
-.39X=-39
X=-39/-.39
X=100 ML OF 56% SOLUTION IS NEEDED.
130-100=30 ML OF 95% SOLUTION IS NEEDED.
PROOF
.56*100+.95*30=84.5
56+28.5=84.5
84.5=84.5

Circles/76708: Hi! I have no idea how to help my son with the following problem. Could you please help us? It is: radius = 3/4 inch. Thank-you! 1 solutions
Answer 55015 by checkley75(3666) on 2007-04-02 16:03:49 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!I'll assume yopu have a circle with a radius of 4/3 inches.
If your looking for the circumferance then:
C=2*PI*R
C=2*3.14*.75
C=4.71 INCHES.
------------------------
If your looking for the area then:
A=PI*R^2
A=3.14*.75^2
A=1.766 INCHES.

Quadratic_Equations/76707: Hi I just want someone to check to see if I did this right.
Quadratic equation
4x cubed -36x=0
4x (x squared -9) = 0
4x (x-3)(x+3) = 0
x=3 , x=-3 , and x=0
Is this right?
Thanks you

Geometric_formulas/76704: 1856Dick and Barbara moved to Ispswich and purchased a home. They paid $1856 per year to insure their two cars. Dick said it cost $358 more per year to insure his car than it did to insure Barbara's car. How much didi it cost to insure Dick's car? How much did it cost to insure Barbara's car? 1 solutions
Answer 55011 by checkley75(3666) on 2007-04-02 15:49:53 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!x+(x+358)=1856
x+x+358=1856
2x=1856-358
2x=1498
x=1498/2
x=749 for the insurance for Barbar's car.
749+358=1107 for Dick's car.
proof
749+1107=1856
1856=1856

Quadratic_Equations/76705: I get so confused with these problems I just don't understand.
It says Solve the Quadratic equations by factoring
(2x-7)(7x+2)=0 And so how would I go about solving this?
turn it into 14x(squared)-45x-14=0??? and then? ugggghh
Some one please help me!!
Thank you for yout time. 1 solutions
Answer 55010 by checkley75(3666) on 2007-04-02 15:45:31 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!(2x-7)(7x+2)=0 there are two ways to go:
---------------------------------------------------------------
solve each of the factors for x thus:
2x-7=0, 2x=7, x=7/2, x=3.5 answer.
7x+2=0, 7x=2, x=2/7 answer.
---------------------------------------------------------------
OR using the FOIL (first, outer, inner, last) multiplication process we get:
14x^2+4x-49x-14=0
14x^2-45x-14=0

You can put this solution on YOUR website!Y=1/2X-3 IS A LINE WITH A SLOPE OF 1/2 & A Y INTERCEPT OF -3 (RED LINE)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
3X+Y=7 OR Y=-3X+7 THIS LINE HAS A SLOPE OF -3 & A Y INTERCEPT OF 7 (GREEN LINE)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 (graph 300x200 pixels, x from -6 to 5, y from -10 to 10, of TWO functions y = x/2 -3, y = -3x +7).

You can put this solution on YOUR website!THE SECRET HERE IS TO CALCULATE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TWO NUMBERS & THEN USE THE SIGN OF THE GREATER NUMBER.
-6+5=-1 THE DIFFERENCE HERE IS 1 WITH THE LARGER NUMBER (6) BEING -
7-5=2 THE DIFFERENCE IS 2 WITH THE LARGER NUMBER (7) BEING +
-11+6=-5 THE DIFFERENCE IS 5 WITH THE GREATER NUMBER (11) BEING -

Linear-systems/76599: Please find X and Y: 2X + 3Y = 16, 5X - 3Y = 44. 1 solutions
Answer 54929 by checkley75(3666) on 2007-04-01 15:38:37 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!2x+3y=16
5x-3y=44 now add these two equations.
---------------------------------------
7x=60
x=60/7 answer. now substitute (60/7) for x and solve for y
2*60/7+3y=16
120/7+3y=16
3y=16-120/7
3y=(7*16-120)/7
3y=(112-120)/7
3y=-8/7
y=-8/7*1/3
y=-8/21 answer.
proof.
5*60/7-3*-8/21=44
300/7+24/21=44
(300*3+24)/21=44
(900+24)/21=44
924/21=44
44=44
