ALGEBRA IS SOMETHING YOU HAVE DONE ALMOST DAILY:
EXAMPLE:
YOU GET A $20.00 BILL TO PAY FOR A $16.55 PURCHASE.
THE ALGEBRA EXPRESSION FOR THIS PROBLEM IS 20,00-16.55=X X BEING THE AMOUNT OF THE CHANGE.
20.00-16.55=X
$3.45=X OR THE AMOUNT OF CHANGE TO BE RETURNED.
EXAMPLE:
A DOZEN EGGS COST $2.40. HOW MUCH IS THE COST FOR EACH EGG? SEEING AS THERE ARE 12 EGGS IN A DOZEN WE SET UP AN EQUATION THUS:
12E=2.40 NOW TO GET THE PRICE OF 1 EGG WE HAVE TO DIVIDE 12E BY 12 TO GET 1E'
AND WE ALSO HAVE TO DIVIDE 2.40 BY 12. WHAT WE DO TO THE LEFT SIDE OF AN EQUATION WE MUST DO THE SAME TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE EQUATION.
12E/12=2.40/12
E=.20 OR 1 EGG COSTS $.20 OR 20 CENTS.
PROOF
12*.20=2.40
2.40=2.40
---------------------------------------------------------
HOPE THIS EXPLAINS THAT ALGEBRA IS NOT A COMPLEX PROCESS.

(40+2X)(24+2X)=2240 THESE ARE THE NEW DIMENTIONS WHEN YOU ADD THE WALKWAY WITH A WIDTH OF X. tHE BEST WAY TO VISUALIZE THIS IS TO DRAW A DIAGRAM OF THE POOL AND ADD THE WALKWAY OF WIDTH X.
960+48X+80X+4X^2=2240
4X^2+128X+960-2240=0
4X^2+128X-1280=0

4(X-8)(X+40)=0
X-8=0
X=8 FEET ANSWER FOR THE WIDTH OF THE WALKWAY.
PROOF

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
27=2L+2W & L*W=44 L=44/W NOW SUBSTITUTE (44/W) FOR L IN THE FIRST EQUATION & SOLVE FOR W.
27=2(44/W)+2W
27=88/W+2W
27=(88+2W^2)/W
27W=88+2W^2
2W^2-27W+88=0
(2W-11)(W-8)=0
2W-11=0
2W=11
W=11/2
W=5.5 ANSWER.
W-8=0
W=8 ANSWER.
27=2L+2*5.5
27=2L-11
2L=27-11
2L=16
L=8 ANSWER WHEN W=5.5
L=5.5 WHEN W=8.
PROOF
44=8*5.5
44=44
