Equations/85330: One number is 12 more than another. The sum of the smaller number and twice the larger number is 39. Find the larger number.
This is where I started with trying to make an equation then I gave up on that and tried doing it the old fashioned way of using my thinking skills and I came up with 17 as my answer. Is it right?
x>12
39=y(2x)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!IF THIS IS A RIGHT TRIANGLE & THE X=THE HYPOTENUSE THEN WE HAVE:
51^2+45^2=X^2
2601+2025=X^2
X^2=4626
X=SQRT626
X=68.0147 ANSWER.
-------------------------------------
IF THE 51 FT IS THE HYPOTENUSE OF THE RIGHT TRIANGLE THEN:
45^2+X^2=51^2
2025+X^2=2601
X^2=2601-2025
X^2=576
X=SQRT576
X=24 FT FOR THE OTHER SIDE.

A^2+B^2=C^2
30^2+X^2=34^2
900+X^2=1190
X^2=1190-900
X^2=290
X=SQRT290
X=17.03 FOR THE OTHER SIDE.

X=360/.04
X=9000 INVESTED @ 10%.
15000-9000=6000 INVESTED @ 6%.
PROOF
.10*9000+.06*6000=1260
900+360=1260

Complex_Numbers/85258: can i get to know the meaning and definition of algebra.please dont give a very complicated one which i wont be able to understand.i m 8th standard. 1 solutions
Answer 61490 by checkley75(3666) on 2007-06-13 17:06:47 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!ALGEBRA IS SOMETHING YOU HAVE DONE ALMOST DAILY:
EXAMPLE:
YOU GET A $20.00 BILL TO PAY FOR A $16.55 PURCHASE.
THE ALGEBRA EXPRESSION FOR THIS PROBLEM IS 20,00-16.55=X X BEING THE AMOUNT OF THE CHANGE.
20.00-16.55=X
$3.45=X OR THE AMOUNT OF CHANGE TO BE RETURNED.
EXAMPLE:
A DOZEN EGGS COST $2.40. HOW MUCH IS THE COST FOR EACH EGG? SEEING AS THERE ARE 12 EGGS IN A DOZEN WE SET UP AN EQUATION THUS:
12E=2.40 NOW TO GET THE PRICE OF 1 EGG WE HAVE TO DIVIDE 12E BY 12 TO GET 1E'
AND WE ALSO HAVE TO DIVIDE 2.40 BY 12. WHAT WE DO TO THE LEFT SIDE OF AN EQUATION WE MUST DO THE SAME TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE EQUATION.
12E/12=2.40/12
E=.20 OR 1 EGG COSTS $.20 OR 20 CENTS.
PROOF
12*.20=2.40
2.40=2.40
---------------------------------------------------------
HOPE THIS EXPLAINS THAT ALGEBRA IS NOT A COMPLEX PROCESS.

.08X=900-.06X+200
.08X+.06X=1100
.14X=1100
X=1100/.14
X=7857.14 INVESTED @ 8%.
15000-7857.14=7142.86 INVESTED @ 6%.
PROOF
.08*7857.14=.06*7142.86+200

Answer 61486 by checkley75(3666) on 2007-06-13 16:45:29 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!40*24=960 SQUARE FEET FOR THE POOL.
(40+2X)(24+2X)=2240 THESE ARE THE NEW DIMENTIONS WHEN YOU ADD THE WALKWAY WITH A WIDTH OF X. tHE BEST WAY TO VISUALIZE THIS IS TO DRAW A DIAGRAM OF THE POOL AND ADD THE WALKWAY OF WIDTH X.
960+48X+80X+4X^2=2240
4X^2+128X+960-2240=0
4X^2+128X-1280=0
4(X^2+32X-320)=0
4(X-8)(X+40)=0
X-8=0
X=8 FEET ANSWER FOR THE WIDTH OF THE WALKWAY.
PROOF
(40+2*8)(24+2*8)=2240
(40+16)(24+16)=2240
56*40=2240
2240=2240
