Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/95843: Solve the equation.
x/2 + 8x/9 = x/18

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
X/2+8X/9=X/18
X/2+8X/9-X/18=0 NOW FIND A COMMON DENOMINATOR (THAT 18,9 & 2 WILL DIVIDE EVENLY INTO) SO YOU CAN COMBINE THESE TERMS. 18 LOOKS LIKE A GOOD CHOICE AS 18/18=1
18/9=2 & 18/2=9.
-----------------------------------
x/2=9x/18
8x/9=16x/18
x/18=x/18
Now you can add them.
9x/18+16x/18-x/18=0
(9x+16x-x)/18=0
24x/18=0 Now reduce.
4x/3=0 Cross multiply.
4x=0
x=0 answer.

Answer 69730 by checkley71(8403) About Me  on 2007-09-02 18:24:51 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
START BY DRAWING A SKETCH OF THE 6 BY 10 PLOT. NOW DRAW A SMALL BORDER AROUND IT & LABEL THE WIDTH X.
THE AREA TO BE FILLED IN IS:
(6+2X)+(10+2X)-6*10
60+20X+12X+4X^2-60
4X^2+32X IS THE AREA TO BE CEMENTED TO A DEPTH OF 3 INCHES WHICH IS 3/12 FEET OR .25 FEET.
THE AMOUNT OF CEMENT IN FEET IS 38383=27 CUBIC FEET.
NEW WE SOLVE FOR THE VALUE OF X:
(4X^2+32X)*.25=27
X^2+8X-27=0
USING THE QUADRATIC EQUATION WE GET:
x+=+%28-b+%2B-+sqrt%28+b%5E2-4%2Aa%2Ac+%29%29%2F%282%2Aa%29+
X=(-8+-SQRT[8^8-4*1*-27])/281
X=(-8=-SQRT(64*108])/2
X=(-8+-SQRT172)/2
X=(-8+-13.11)/2
X=(-8+13.11)/2
X=5.11/2
X=2.56 FEET IS THE WIDTH OF THE BORDER NEEDED FOR THE 27 CUBIC FEET OF CEMENT.
FILL IN THESE MEASUREMENTS IN YOUR DIAGRAM AND VERIFY THE ANSWERS OR 2.56 FEET FOR THE WIDTH & .25 FEET FOR THE DEPTH.

Linear_Equations_And_Systems_Word_Problems/95705: Hi need some help with this problem:
Congratulations! You are the proud owner of a new home, and today is moving day! Suppose the movers you have hired to help you have just left and will meet you at your new house to unload your belongings. The new house is 86 miles away. The movers left 12 minutes ago and are traveling at 50 miles per hour. (Hint: Change 12 minutes to its hour equivalent). You are leaving your house now and plan to drive 65 miles per hour. You want to reach the new house before the movers arrive, which means that you will pass them on the road.
a) Complete the table below.
Distance (miles) Rate (mph) Time (in hours)
You d t
Movers d t+0.2
b) Create a system of equations. One equation will show your distance at any given time t. The other equation will show the distance of the movers at any given time t.
c) How much time will it take you to catch up with the movers? How did you arrive at your answer?
d) How many miles will you have traveled when you catch up to the movers? Explain how you reached your answer.

50t=65(t-.2)

t=13/15
t=.87 hours or 52 minutes you'll overtake the movers.
the distance traveled is:
50*.87=43.5 miles the truckers will have traveled.
65(.87-.2)=65*.67=43.5 miles you will have traveled.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(172+150+148+162+X)/5=160
(632+X)/5=160 NOW CROSS MULTIPLY
632+X=800
X=800-632
X=168 IS THE MINBIMUM SCORE FOR THE LAST GAME TO HAVE AN AVERAGE OF AT LEAST 160.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
S^2+(S+1)^2+(S+2)^2=365
S^2+S^2+2S+1+S^2+4S+4=365
3S^2+6S+5-365=0
3S^2+6S-360=0
3(S^2+2S-120=0
(S-10)(S+12)=0
S-10=0
S=10 FOR THE SIDE OF THE SMALLER SQUARE
S=11 & S=12 FOR THE OTHER 2 SQUARES
PERIMETERS=4*10+4*11+4*12=40+44+48=132CM.

A+C=29 A=29-C
20A+13C=510 NOW SUBSTITUTE (29-C) FOR A IN THIS EQUATION 7 SOLVE FOR C
20(29-C)+13C=510
580-20C+13C=510
-7C=510-580
-7C=-70
C=-70/-7
C=10 CHILDREN TICKETS SOLD.
29-10=19 ADULT TICKETS SOLD.
PROOF
20*19=10*13=510
280+130=510

THERE ARE 2 DIFFERENT WAYS TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM:
CONVERT ALL THESE FRACTIONS TO DECIMAL & ADD.
.5+.25+.125=.875 ANSWER.
OR WE CAN FIND A COMMON DENOMINATOR AND ADD.
1/4=2/8
1/2=4/8
1/8=1/8 NOW WE CAN ADD THEM ALL.
(2+4+1)/8=7/8 ANSWER.
IT SOMETIMES DEPENDS ON THE FORM OF THE ANSWER AS TO WHICH TECHNIQUE YOU USE.
HOWEVER THE ANSWERS ARE THE SAME:
7/8=.875

1 1/3-1 1/4 HERE WE NEED TO CHANCE THESE MIXED FRACTION TO IMPROPER FRACTIONS THUS:
4/3-5/4 NOW WE NEED TO FIND A COMMON DENOMINATOR. 3*4=12 WILL DO.
4/3=(4*4)/12=16/12)
5/4=(5*3)/12=15/12 NOW WE CAN SUBTRACT THEM.
(16-15)/12=1/12 IS THE ANSWER.

FIRST YOU NEED TO IDENTIFY ALL THE CORNER POINTS.
THEN FIND THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THEM USING THE PYTHAGOREON THEORUM (A^2+B^2=C^2) AS EACH SET OF POINTS FORM A RIGHT TRIANGLE. THE DISTANCE IS THE HYPOTENUSE OF THESE TRIANGLES (C).
ONCE YOU'VE FOUND THE LENGTH OF THE TWO PARALLEL SIDES JUST ADD THEM FOR THE PERIMETER.
