Geometry_Word_Problems/98263: A girl stands 400 ft. from a tree. With her eye at ground level she sights along a yard stick and finds the top of the yard stick coincides with the top of the tree when the bottom of the yard stick is 4 feet from her eye. Find the height of the tree. 1 solutions
Answer 71437 by checkley71(8403) on 2007-09-14 20:20:05 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!3/4=x/400
4x=1200
x=1200/4
x=300 feet to the top of the tree.
proof
draw a triangle with the base=400, the distance from the eye to the bottom of the yard stick=4 feet & the height of the yard stick=3 feet.
now you have a 3 by 4 right triangle and an x by 400 triangle.
these are similiar triangles whose sides are proportional:
3:4, 300:400

Percentage-and-ratio-word-problems/98273: a wealthy mathematician left her $6,000,000 estate to her three children. The eldest received 1/3rd of the estate. The youngest received 1/4th of the remainder of the estate. The middle child recived what was left. How much did each child receive? 1 solutions
Answer 71435 by checkley71(8403) on 2007-09-14 20:12:34 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!6,000,000*1/3=2,000,000 left to the eldest.
6,000,000-2,000,000=4,000,000*1/4=1,000,000 left to the youngest.
that leaves 6,000,000-2,000,000-1,000,000=3,000,000 for the middle child.

Finance/98036: A combined total of $20,000 is invested in two bonds that pay 8% and 9.5% simple intrest. The annual interest is $1675. How much is invested in each bond? 1 solutions
Answer 71367 by checkley71(8403) on 2007-09-13 22:31:34 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!.095X+.08(20000-X)=1675
.095X+1600-.08X=1675
.015X=1675-1600
.015X=75
X=75/.015
X=5000 INVESTED @ 9.5%
20000-5000=15000 INVESTED @ 8%
PROOF
.095*5000=.08*15000=1675
475+1200=1675
1675=1675

Graphs/98124: Determine the equation of each line. Write the answer in standard form using only integers as the coefficients.
The line through (0,9) that is parallel to the line 3x+5y=15. 1 solutions
Answer 71361 by checkley71(8403) on 2007-09-13 22:13:49 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!WE NEED TO FIND THE SLOPE OF THIS LINE
3X+5Y=15
5Y=-3X+15
Y=-3X/5+15/5
Y=-3X/5+3 HERE THE SLOPE IS -3/5. (RED LINE)
THEN THE LINE THROUGH (0,9) MUST HAVE A SLOPE OR (-3/5) ALSO TO BE PARALLEL.
NOW SUBSTITUTE THESE (X,Y) VALUES (0,9) & THE SLOPE OF (-3/5) IN THE LINE EAUQTION 7 SOLVE FOR (b) THE Y INTERCEPT OF THIS LINE:
9=-3/5*0+b
b=9 FOR THE Y INTERCEPT OG THIS LINE THAT IS PARALLEL TO THE GIVEN LINE WITH A SLOPE OF (-3/5) & A Y INTERCEPT (b=9)
Y=-3X/5+9 (GREEN LINE)
 (graph 300x200 pixels, x from -6 to 5, y from -10 to 10, of TWO functions Y = -3X/5 +3 and Y = -3X/5 +9).

Angles/98111: This question is from textbook Holt Geometry Texas
The question involves supplementary angles
< ABE = 5x (after the x is a degree sign)
< BDE = (17x-18) (after the this problem is another degree sign
What is the solution to the problem? I have no clue on this one.
Thank you. 1 solutions
Answer 71358 by checkley71(8403) on 2007-09-13 21:58:39 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!SUPPLEMENTARY ANGLES ADD UP TO 180 DEGREES. THEREFORE THESE TWO ANGLES MUST ADD UP TO 180 DEGREES THUS
5X+17X-18=180
22X=180+18
22X=198
X=198/22
X=9
5*9=45 FOR THE SMALLER ANGLE.
17*9-18=153-18=135 FOR THE LARGER ANGLE.
PROOF
45+135=180
180=180

Graphs/98112: determine the equation of each line. Write the answer in standard form using only integers as the coefficients.
The line through (-2,0) with slope -3/4. (the negative sign next to the 3/4 is in the middle of the 3 and 4 next to the divide line) 1 solutions
Answer 71355 by checkley71(8403) on 2007-09-13 21:50:31 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!THE LINE FORMULA IS [Y=mX+b} WHERE (m)=SLOPE & (b)=THE Y INTERCEPT.
NOW SUBSTITUTE THE X (-2) & Y (0) VALUES & THE SLOPE (-3/4) & SOLVE FOR (b) THE Y INTERCEPT.
0=-3/4*-2+b
0=6/4+b
b=-6/4
b=-1.5 WHICH IS THE Y INTERCEPT.
THUS THE EQUATION IS:
Y=-3X/4-1.5
SO WE NOW HAVE 2 POINTS (0,-1.5) & (-2,0) & A SLOPE OF (-3/4)
 (graph 300x200 pixels, x from -6 to 5, y from -10 to 10, y = -3x/4 -1.5).

Rectangles/98103: This is a word problem that I was given and am having grief solving.
You have a carpet that measures 12' x 3' and you need to carpet an hallway that measures 9' x 4'. WITHOUT folding the carpet, how can you carpet the area with only making ONE cut.
The point is to be able to cover a 9 x 4 rectangle using a 12' x 3' rectangle that is cut once, not folded. 1 solutions
Answer 71351 by checkley71(8403) on 2007-09-13 21:40:34 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Draw a diagram of a 12 by 3 rectangle with the 12 foot side the length left to right..
Starting @ the upper right corner measure 3 feet to the left & cut the rug 1 foot down. Now cut 3 feet to the left & then 1 foot down another 3 feet to the left & down the final foot.
Now move the left piece up one foot & 3 feet to the right.
You now have a 9 by 4 rug.
Using graph paper it looks simple to do.

x=28.8/.1
x=288 gallons of 60 % acid is needed.
proof
.6*288+.14*80=.5(80+288)
