You can put this solution on YOUR website!
3/4=x/400
4x=1200
x=1200/4
x=300 feet to the top of the tree.
proof
draw a triangle with the base=400, the distance from the eye to the bottom of the yard stick=4 feet & the height of the yard stick=3 feet.
now you have a 3 by 4 right triangle and an x by 400 triangle.
these are similiar triangles whose sides are proportional:
3:4, 300:400

Answer 71435 by checkley71(8403) About Me  on 2007-09-14 20:12:34 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
6,000,000*1/3=2,000,000 left to the eldest.
6,000,000-2,000,000=4,000,000*1/4=1,000,000 left to the youngest.
that leaves 6,000,000-2,000,000-1,000,000=3,000,000 for the middle child.

Graphs/98112: determine the equation of each line. Write the answer in standard form using only integers as the coefficients.
The line through (-2,0) with slope -3/4. (the negative sign next to the 3/4 is in the middle of the 3 and 4 next to the divide line)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
THE LINE FORMULA IS [Y=mX+b} WHERE (m)=SLOPE & (b)=THE Y INTERCEPT.
NOW SUBSTITUTE THE X (-2) & Y (0) VALUES & THE SLOPE (-3/4) & SOLVE FOR (b) THE Y INTERCEPT.
0=-3/4*-2+b
0=6/4+b
b=-6/4
b=-1.5 WHICH IS THE Y INTERCEPT.
THUS THE EQUATION IS:
Y=-3X/4-1.5
SO WE NOW HAVE 2 POINTS (0,-1.5) & (-2,0) & A SLOPE OF (-3/4)

5-4C=C+20
-4C-C=20-5
-5C=15
C=15/-5
C=-3
PROOF
5-4*-3=-3+20
5+12=17
17=17

Rectangles/98103: This is a word problem that I was given and am having grief solving.

You have a carpet that measures 12' x 3' and you need to carpet an hallway that measures 9' x 4'. WITHOUT folding the carpet, how can you carpet the area with only making ONE cut.

The point is to be able to cover a 9 x 4 rectangle using a 12' x 3' rectangle that is cut once, not folded.

Draw a diagram of a 12 by 3 rectangle with the 12 foot side the length left to right..
Starting @ the upper right corner measure 3 feet to the left & cut the rug 1 foot down. Now cut 3 feet to the left & then 1 foot down another 3 feet to the left & down the final foot.
Now move the left piece up one foot & 3 feet to the right.
You now have a 9 by 4 rug.
Using graph paper it looks simple to do.

Mixture_Word_Problems/98058: How many gallons of a 60 percent acid solution must be mixed with 80 gallons of a 14 percent solution to obtain a solution that is 50 percent acid?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
.6x+.14*80=.5(80+x)
.6x+11.2=40+.5x
.6x-.5x=40-11.2
.1x=28.8
x=28.8/.1
x=288 gallons of 60 % acid is needed.
proof
.6*288+.14*80=.5(80+288)
172.8+11.2=.5*368
184=184
