You can put this solution on YOUR website!
400/x=300/(x-14)
400(x-14)=300x
400x-5600=300x
400x-300x=5600
100x=5600
x=5600/100
x=56 mph. for the faster train.
56-14=42 mph. is the speed of the slower train
PROOF:
400/56=300/(56-14)
7.143=300/42
7.143=7.143

Linear-equations/126461:
graph the line that passes through (5,4), parallel to the graph of 4.4x+6.5y=5
1 solutions

Answer 92667 by checkley71(8403) About Me  on 2008-02-12 10:10:34 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
4.4x+6.5y=5
6.5y=-4.4x+5
6.5y=-4.4x+5
y=-4.4x/6.5+5/6.5 this line has a slope=(-4.4/6.5) (red line)
Thus a parallel line will also have a slope=(-4.4/6.6)
4=(-4.4/6.5)5+b
4=-22/6.5+b
4+22/6.5=b
b=(4*6.5+22)/6.5
b=(26+22)/6.5
b=48/6.5 thus the equation is:
y=-4.4x/6.5+48/6.5 answer. (green line)
(graph 300x200 pixels, x from -6 to 5, y from -10 to 10, of TWO functions -4.4x +5/6.5 and -4.4x/6.5 +5/6.5).

Surface-area/126484:
How many square tiles each of dimension 2m * 2m can be fixed on a verandah 2m. wide surrounding a rectangular room of length 20m. and breadth 15m.
1 solutions

Answer 92664 by checkley71(8403) About Me  on 2008-02-12 09:52:37 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
20*15=300 m^2 is the area of the veranda.
(20+2*2)(15+2*2)
24*19=456 m^2 total area of veranda plus the addition.
456-300=156 m^2 area of the addition.
156/(2*2)=156/4=39 2X2 m tiles will do the job.
NOTE: one tile will have to be cut in half.

5x-2(5x+3)=-5
5x-10x-6=-5
-5x=-5+6
-5x=1
x=1/-5
x=-1/5 answer.
y=5*-1/5+3
y=-1+3
y=2 answer.
proof:
5*-1/5-2*2=-5
-1-4=-5
-5=-5

Graphs/126199: Angus invested $18,000, part at 3% and part at 5%. If the total interest at the end of the year is $660, how much did he invest at each rate?
1 solutions

Answer 92502 by checkley71(8403) About Me  on 2008-02-11 09:44:07 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
.05x+.03(18000-x)=660
.05x+540-.03x=660
.02x=660-540
.02x=120
x=120/.02
x=6000 amount invested @ 5%.
18000-6000=12000 invested @ 3%.
proof:
.05*6000+.03*12000=660
300+360=660
660=660
