Quadratic_Equations/142718: Im having some trouble with this one. I know how to put the problem in the right order but the y/2 has me confused. So I would appreciate help solving this one. Here it is: y^2+y/2=-3/2 The only thing I was sure about was putting it into the correct form: y^2+y/2+3/2

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
I read it like this:
y%5E2%2B%281%2F2%29y%2B3%2F2=0
Now get rid of the fractions by multiplying the whloe equation by 2
%282%29%28y%5E2%2B%281%2F2%29%2Ay%2B3%2F2%29=0
So you get
2y%5E2%2By%2B3=0
Now solve using the quadratic equation
x=%28-b%2B-sqrt%28b%5E2-4%2Aa%2Ac%29%29%2F%282%2Aa%29
a=2 b=1 c=3
plug them in:
x=%28-1%2B-sqrt%281%5E2-4%2A2%2A3%29%29%2F%282%2A2%29
Multiply, I usually work out the discriminant seprately so there is no mistakes by rewriting the equation several times.
x=%28-1%2B-sqrt%2823%29%29%2F4
since you cannot reduce this is the final answer.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
First, subtract 1000-45=955
Then, divide 955%2F250=3.82
Since one cannot take .82 of a course, the answer is 3 courses

Answer 103836 by bebedeeb(7) About Me  on 2008-05-22 19:47:40 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
to start, let n = the number
and, let n%5E2 = its square
son%5E2%2Bn=156
put this quadratic equation in to standard form
n%5E2%2Bn-156=0
now factor it out
%28n-12%29%28n%2B13%29=0
so n=12 or n=-13
lets see:
12%5E2%2B12=156 CHECK
-13%5E2%2B%28-13%29=156 CHECK

We can FOIL this one.
F - 2%2A7=14
O - 2%2A5i=10i
I - -3i%2A7=21i
L - -3i%2A5i=-15i%5E2
Now write out the binomial:
14%2B10i%2B21i-15i%5E2
remember i%5E2=-1
so -15i%5E2=15
Now combind like terms:
14%2B15%2B10i%2B21i=
29+31i (remember to keep in a+bi form to be correct)

Graphs/142672: The Middletown Magic Shop sold two magic top hats today. Then someone returned one of them because the rabbit that came out of it bit him in the middle of his act. At the end of the day, there were 15 magic top hats in the shop. How many top hats were in the shop at the beginning of the day?

Lets back in to this one...
At the end of the day, there were 15 hats.
Earlier 2 had been sold 1 of which was returned.
so 15+2-1=16

Answer 103829 by bebedeeb(7) About Me  on 2008-05-22 19:23:53 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
7x%5E%285%2F3%29=36
First divide both sides by 7
7x%5E%285%2F3%29%2F7=36%2F7
so x%5E%285%2F3%29=5.142857143
then cube both sides %28x%5E%285%2F3%29%29%5E3=%285.142857143%29%5E3
so x%5E5=136.0233236
then take the 5th root from both sides
x=2.67130076
