Answer 168820 by ankor@dixie-net.com(15647) About Me  on 2009-10-15 08:15:27 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Three integers, x, y, z
:
The sum of three integers is 65 more than twice the first integer - find all three integers.
x + y + z = 2x + 65
:
y + z = 2x - x + 65
:
y + z = x + 65
:
As you can see, there is no way to find the values of of x, y, z here
:
If you meant three consecutive integers:
x + (x+1) + (x+2) = 2x + 65
3x + 3 = 2x + 65
3x - 2x = 65 - 3
x = 62
:
62, 63, 64 are the integers
;

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
sqrt%282r%5E2+-+121%29 = r
Square both sides and you have
2r^2 - 121 = r^2
2r^2 - r^2 = + 121
r^2 = 121
r = sqrt%28121%29
r = +11 is the valid solution
;
;
4+%2B+sqrt%28m-2%29 = m
sqrt%28m-2%29 = m - 4
Square both sides
m - 2 = (m-4)^2
m - 2 = m^2 - 8m + 16
0 = m^2 - 8m - m + 16 + 2
A quadratic equation
m^2 - 9m + 18
Factors to
(m-6)(m-3) = 0
m = 6
and
m = 3
:
You check both solutions in original equation, only one is valid

A health food store sells seasoning blends in bulk.
One blend contains 20% basil. Sheila wants to add pure basil to some 20% blend to make 16 ounces of her own 30% blend.
Let b represent the amount of basil Sheila should add to the 20% blend.
:
Let b = amt of pure basil (as it says)
The resulting amt is to be 16 oz, therefore
(16-b) = amt of 20% basil to be used
:
Write a mixture equation using decimal equiv of percent;
.20(16-b) + 1b = .30(16)
:
3.2 - .2b + 1b = 4.8
:
.2b + 1b = 4.8 - 3.2
:
.8b = 1.6
b = 1.6%2F.8
b = 2 oz of pure basil required
;
:
Check this
.2(14) + 2 = .3(16)
2.8 + 2 = 4.8

Rational-functions/226869: Simplify each expression. Write your answers with positive
exponents. Assume that all variables represent positive real
numbers.
(-27x9)1/3
The 9 is a 'to the power of' number and the 1/3 is also like a to the power number on the outside of the parenthesis, as in being smaller like the 9 should be. Does this make sense to anyone?? I hope because I really need help with how I am supposed to do it, can someone please help me??

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A commercial building was built in 1 - 7/8 months by 20 skilled workers and 30 unskilled laborers.
If 30 skilled men were contracted the group alone would have erected the facility in 2 months time,
How long should it take one unskilled worker alone to complete the job?
Find the time required by one skilled worker
:
It says, "Two months with 30 skilled workers only"
that's 60 man/months (skilled) to complete the job
Therefore one man requires 60 months to do the job
:
Then 20 skilled men: 60/20 = 3 months to do the same job
:
:
Change 17%2F8 to 1.875 months
Let u = the time required by 30 unskilled workers
:
Let the completed job = 1
:
Skilled + unskilled = completed job
1.875%2F3 + 1.875%2Fu = 1
:
Multiply equation by 3u
1.875u + 3(1.875) = 3u
5.625 = 3u - 1.875u
5.625 = 1.125u
u = 5.625%2F1.125
:
u = 5 months using 30 unskilled men
therefore
5*30 = 150 man/months (unskilled) to do the job
therefore:
150 months for one unskilled man to do the job
and
60 months for one skilled man to do it
;
:
Check solution:
1.875%2F3 + 1.875%2F5 = 1
.625 + .375 = 1

I think you got the right idea
:
Each girl in the Smith family has the same number of brothers as she has sisters.
For this to be true: g = b+1 (sisters 1 less than no. of girls)
:
Each boy in the Smith family has twice as many sisters as he has brothers.
For this to be true: 2(b-1) = g (brothers a 1 less than no. of boys)
:
How many girls and boys are there in the Smith family?
Replace g with b+1 in equation: 2(b-1) = g
2(b - 1) = b + 1
2b - 2 = b + 1
2b - b = 1 + 2
b = 3 boys
then using the 1st statement:
g = 3 + 1 = 4 girls
:
:
see if that is true:
girl has 3 brothers and 3 sisters (1st statement)
boy has 4 sisters, 2 brothers (2nd statement)

Problem: 6 times julie's age is decreased by 112, the result is twice julie's age. How old is julie?
this is how i started:
:
This is correct equation
6x - 112 = 2x
3x - 112 = x
However if you want to simplify, you have to divide each term by 2, should be:
3x - 56 = x
:
we want to perform operations that will get the unknown (x) on the left and the numerical values on the right
:
subtract x from both sides
3x - x - 56 = 0
add 56 to each side
2x = 56
:
Divide both sides by 2
x = 56%2F2
x = 28 yrs old
:
:
now check the solution in the original statement
" 6 times julie's age is decreased by 112, the result is twice julie's age."
6(28) - 112 = 2(28)
168 - 112 = 56
56 = 56, confirms the solution

With a certain tail wind a certain jet aircraft arrives at it's destination, 1,890 miles away,in 3 hours.
Flying against the same wind, the plane makes the return trip in 3 3/8 hours.
Find the wind speed and the plane's airspeed.

It is convenient that we can simplify both these equations:
divide the 1st by 3.375

resulting in two simple equations that can be used for elimination of w
s - w = 560
s + w = 630

Torque left home on his bicycle at 9:00 A.M., traveling at an average rate of 12 mph.
At noon, Torque's brother set out after him on a motorcycle, following the same route, averaging 39 mph.
How long had Torque been riding when his brother caught up?
:
Let t = time Torque had been riding
then the brother starts, 3hrs later, therefore
(t-3) = travel time of the brother
:
A good fact to remember in these "catch up" problems, is when this occurs,
they both will have traveled the same distance
:
write a distance equation from this fact; (dist = speed * time)
:
bro dist = T's dist
39(t - 3) = 12t
39t - 117 = 12t
39t - 12t = +117
27t = 117
t = 117%2F27
t = 41%2F3 hrs (4 hr 20 min) is the riding time of T
;
:
Check the solution by finding the dist traveled by each
(bro traveled 4.33 - 3 = 1.33 hr)
4.33 * 12 ~ 52 mi
1.33 * 39 ~ 52 mi

a b747 aircraft flew 6hours with the wind.
The return trip took 7 hours against the wind.
If the speed of the plane in still air is 13 times the speed of the wind, find the wind speed and the speed of the plane in still air.
:
Actually there is no way of knowing, proceed this way
:
let x = speed of the wind
and
13x = speed of the plane
then
(13x + x) = 14x is the speed with the wind
and
(13x - x) = 12x is the speed against the wind
:
The distance there and back are the same so write a distance equation:
:
6(14x) = 7(12x)
84x = 84x
Which means there are any number of values for the wind speed
Whatever it is, the speed of the plane will be 13 times the speed of the wind

solve for x by using the factoring method:
3x^2 - 48 = 0
Factor out 3
3(x^2 - 16)
x^2 = 16
x = sqrt%2816%29
x = +/- 4
;
:
Is this true?
3(4^2) - 48 = 0
3(16) - 48 = 0

In a box, there are 25 coins consisting of quarter, nickels and dimes with a total amount of $2.75.
if the nickels were dimes, and the dimes were quarters, and the quarters were nickels, the total amount would be $3.75.
how many quarters are there?
:
Originally x=no.of nickels, y=dimes, z=quarters
:
Three equations:
x + y + z = 25
:
5x + 10y + 25z = 275; using cents
:
25x + 5y + 10z = 375
:
Multiply the 1st equation by 5, subtract from the 2nd equation
5x + 10y + 25z = 275
5x + 5y + 5z = 125
-----------------------eliminate x
5y + 20z = 150
simplify, divide by 5
y + 4z = 30
:
Multiply 1st equation by 25, subtract the 3rd equation
25x + 25y + 25z = 625
25x + 5y + 10z = 375
------------------------eliminate x again
20y + 15z = 250
Simplify, divide by 5
4y + 3z = 50
:
We have two, 2 unknown equations
y + 4z = 30
4y + 3z = 50
:
Multiply the 1st equation by 4, subtract the 2nd
4y + 16z = 120
4y + 3z = 50
:
There is something wrong with this problem, it does not have integer solutions

tom's family is planning a 7-day trip to texas. they want to spend time in both san antonio and dallas.
they estimate that it will cost $275 per day in san antonio and $400 per day in dallas.
Their budget for the 7 days is $2300. How many days should they spend in each city?
:
you want to write an equation with one unknown here
Let s = days in S.A.
then
(7-s) = days in Dallas
:
275s + 400(7-s) = 2300
:
275s + 2800 - 400s = 2300
275s - 400s = 2300 - 2800
-125s = -500
s = %28-500%29%2F%28-125%29
s = 4 days in S.A. and obviously, Dallas 3 days
;
:
You can check solution by finding the total for each city.

Travel_Word_Problems/225739: 2 Jets fly in opposite directions, one at 250mph and the other at 500mph. How far apart are they after 35 minutes?
I figured that the one at 250 flies at 4.1666 miles per minute, (so 145.8333 at 35 minutes) and the one at 500 is 8.3333 per minute (so 291.6666 at 35 minutes) - so add the two together to get about 437.5 miles apart....
But my program is telling me that the answer is 291 miles apart. Am I thinking about this wrongly? Or is my program wrong?

2 Jets fly in opposite directions, one at 250mph and the other at 500mph.
How far apart are they after 35 minutes?
:
You check this using relative speed, 250 + 500 = 750
Dist = speed * time
:
750 * 35%2F60 = 437.5 mi which what you got

A tank can be filled from the faucet in 8 hours.
It takes only 6 hours to empty the tank when the drain is open.
If the tank is full and both the faucet and drain are open, how long will it take to empty the tank?
:
Let t = time required for this happen
:
Let the completed job = 1; (an empty tank)
:
t%2F6 - t%2F8 = 1
Multiply equation by 24, results:
4t - 3t = 24
t = 24 hrs to run the tank empty
;
;
Check solution:
24%2F6 - 24%2F8 = 1
4 - 3 = 1
