You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A lot is in the shape of a right triangle.
The shorter leg measures 60 meters.
The hypotenuse is 20 meters longer than the length of the longer leg.
How long is the longer leg
:
Let x = the longer leg
then
(x+20) = the hypotenuse
:
60^2 + x^2 = (x+20)^2
:
FOIL the right side
3600 + x^2 = x^2 + 40x + 400
:
Group the x's on the left, numbers on the right
x^2 - x^2 - 40x = 400 - 3600
:
-40x = -3200
Multiply both sides by -1
40x = 3200
:
divide both sides by 40
x = 3200%2F40
x = 80 meters is the longer leg
;
:
Check: hypotenuse = 80 + 20 = 100
60^2 + 80^2 = 100^2

Car two travels at 60 mph from point a to b(140 miles)and 50 mph from b to c (200 miles).
If both cars arrive at point c at the same time, how fast did car one drive?
:
Find the time required for car two to go a to b to c
Time = dist/speed
:
total time = time at 60mph + time at 50mph
t = 140%2F60 + 200%2F50
t = 2.33 + 4
t = 6.33 hrs
:
Find the speed of car one to drive 244 mi in 6.33 hrs
s = 244%2F6.33
s = 38.5 mph speed of car one

The bottom of the box and all four sides are constructed of glass costing $1/ft2,
and
the top is to be constructed of glass costing $5/ft2.
Sally has $72 to spend on the box.
How should she choose the dimensions so that the volume of the box is greatest?
:
Let x = the side of the square base and top
Let h = height of the box
5 of the sides cost $1 a sq/ft
Top cost 5x^2
:
We need to get h in terms of x
:
Top + bottom + 4 sides = 72
5x^2 + x^2 + 4(xh) = 72
6x^2 + 4(xh) = 72
4xh = 72 - 6x^2

The sum of the digits of a 2-digit number is 8.
x + y = 8
y = (8-x)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A carpenter charges a set fee for each job in addition to his hourly charge.
If a carpenter bills his customer $125 for a job which takes him 3 hours
and bills a second customer $200 for a 6 hour job,
:
Let f = fixed fee
Let h = hourly rate
:
Two equations:
3h + f = 125; "$125 for a job which takes him 3 hours"
6h + f = 200; "$200 for a 6 hr job"
:
Subtract the 1st equation from the 2nd equation
6h + f = 200
3h + f = 125
--------------- eliminates f, find h
3h = 75
h = $25 an hr
;
Find f in the 1st equation
3(25) + f = 125
f = 125 - 75
f = $50 set fee
:
:
Check solution in the 2nd equation
6(25) + 50 = 200
150 + 50 = 200
:
how much would he charge for a job that takes 8 hours?
8(25) + 50 = $250

Here is yet another way, perhaps simpler.
Day 1 drive 40 miles per hour and arrive one minute late.
Day 2 drive 45 miles per hour and arrive one minute early.
How far do you drive to work
:
Let t = time to drive to work at 45 mph
then
(t+2%2F60) = time to work at 40 mph (takes 2 min longer)
which is
(t+1%2F30)
;
The distance both days is the same, write a dist equation d = speed * time
:
day 1 dist = day 2 dist
40(t+1%2F30) = 45t
:
40t + 4%2F3 = 45t
4%2F3 = 45t - 40t
5t = 4%2F3
t = 1%2F5 * 4%2F3
t = 4%2F15 hr
:
Find the dist
45 * 4%2F15 = 12 mi

Write an equation for each statement:
:
Megan sold 9 more subscriptions than Mary.
Me = Ma + 9

FOIL
y^2 + 4x + 4 = 4y^2
Arrange as a quadratic on the right
0 = 4y^2 - y^2 - 4x - 4
0 = 3y^2 - 4y - 4
Factor this to
(3y + 2)(y - 2) = 0
Two solutions
3y = -2
y = -2%2F3
and
y = 2
:
Find x when y = -2/3
x = -2%2F3 + 2
x = 4%2F3
:
Find x when y = 2
x = 2 + 2
x = 4
:
x = 4, y = 2 and x = 4/3, y = -2/3
:
You should check both solutions in: x^2 + y^2 = 5y^2

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
a blend of coffee has 60% of grade A and 40% of grade B, and is sold at 78 cents a pound.
If the blend was 40% grade A and 60% grade B, the price would be 62 cents a pound.
find the price of grade A per pound
;
Let A = cost of Grade A per pound (in cents)
Let B = cost of Grade B per pound
:
Write an equation for each blend
:
.6A + .4B = 78
.4A + .6B = 62
:
Multiply the 1st equation by 3, multiply the 2nd equation by 2
1.8A + 1.2B = 234
0.8A + 1.2B = 124
---------------------Subtraction eliminates B, find A
1A + 0 = 110
A = 110 cents or $1.10 a lb
:
:
To check our solution, find the cost of B
.6(110) + .4B = 78
66 + .4B = 78
.4B = 78 - 66
.4B = 12
B = 12%2F.4
B = 30 cents a lb
;
Check this in the 2nd equation
.4(110) + .6(30) =
44 + 18 = 62; confirms our solution

Please help me solve for x : 10x^2+70x=180
Standard form
10x^2 + 70x - 180 = 0
Simplify, divide by 10:
x^2 + 7x - 18 = 0
Factors to:
(x+9)(x-2) = 0
Two solutions
x = -9
x = +2
:
:
Check solution in original problem using x=-9
10x^2 + 70x = 180
10(-9^2) + 70(-9) = 180
10(81) - 630 = 180
810 - 630 = 180
:
You can check the x=2 solution

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Roland, Mark and Peter are 3 children in the same family.
Write an equation for each statement:
:
Peter is 3 times Marks age.
p = 3m
:
In 2 years Peter will be twice the age Roland is at that time.
p + 2 = 2(r+2)
p + 2 = 2r + 4
p = 2r + 4 - 2
p = 2r + 2
:
Roland is 1 year older than Mark.
r = m + 1
:
How old are the children?
:
In the second equation, replace p with 3m and r with m+1
p = 2r + 2
3m = 2(m+1) + 2
2m = 2m + 2 + 2
3m - 2m = 4
m = = 4 yrs is Marks age
then
r = m + 1
r = 4 + 1
r = 5 yrs is Roland's age
:
and
p = 3m
p = 3(4)
p = 12 yrs is Peter's age
:
:
Check solution in the 2nd equation
12 + 2 = 2(5+2)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x + 2y - 3z = 2
3y - z = 13
3y + 5z =25
:
Start by subtracting the 2nd equation from the 3rd equation
3y + 5z = 25
3y - z = 13
--------------subtraction eliminates y, find z
6z = 12
z = 12%2F6
z = 2
;
Find y using the 2rd equation, substitute 2 for z
3y - 2 = 13
3y = 13 + 2
3y = 15
y = 5
;
find x using the 1st equation, substituting for y and z
x + 2(5) - 3(2) = 2
x + 10 - 6 = 2
x + 4 = 2
x = 2 - 4
x = -2

For which integers a, b, c does a -b –c= a-(b – c)?
:
I think a or b can be any value, however, c = 0
:
a - b - c = a -(b - c)
Subtract a from both sides
-b - c = -(b - c)
Remove brackets
-b - c = -b + c
In order for this to be true c = 0, right?
