You can put this solution on YOUR website!One pipe can fill a tank in 2 hours. A second pipe can fill it in 1.75 hours.
How long will it take to fill the tank with both pipes open?
:
Let t = time required when working together
Let the completed job = 1; (a full tank)
:
Each pipe will do a fraction of the job, the two fractions add up to 1
:
t/2 + t/1.75 = 1
multiply both sides by 14, resulting
7t + 8t = 14
15t = 14
t = 14/15 hrs
or
t = 14/15 *60 = 56 min working together

You can put this solution on YOUR website!if nails are bought at 35 cents per dozen and sold at 3 for 10 cents, the profit on dozen is?
:
Find the selling price of a dozen nails (4 sets of 3 = 12)
4 * 10 = 40 cents for 12
:
40 - 35 = 5 cents profit on a dozen nails

The result multiplied by 3 is equal to 45 what is the number?
:
3(20-n) = 45
60 - 3n = 45
-3n = 45 - 60
-3n = -15
n = -15/-3
n = +5

Circles/699282: I have a question that goes like this: The school board has voted to have the school track repaved, what is the total expense if the charge is $3.20 per square foot? It also says to use 3.14 for pi. the track is a outer rim and has a diameter (i guess thats what its called) of 20 feet the inside circle has a radius of 200 feet.
Please help, my mom started yelling at me because of it so please help!
I have the equation its just that I really dont understand how to plug in the numbers and actually solve the problem.
If you happen to reply thanks! 1 solutions

It also says to use 3.14 for pi. the track is a outer rim and has a width 20
feet the inside circle has a radius of 200 feet.:
From the information given the outer radius which includes the track is 220 ft
:
Find the total area of this
A = 3.14*220^2
A = 151976 sq/ft
:
The inner circle are is not paved, find the area of that
A = 3.14*200^2
A = 125600
:
Paved area = 151976 - 125600 =
:
multiply this answer by 3.20 to find the Cost to pave the track

Geometry_Word_Problems/699066: "This is the problem. Would you please help me with this? Thank You!" ---> A and B working together can finish a certain job in 20/3 hours. You can put this solution on YOUR website!A and B working together can finish a certain job in 20/3 hours.
They start the work together, but after 3 hours, A became ill and B continuing the work alone. finished it in 33/4 hours.
How long would it take each working alone to do the job?
:
let a = A doing the job alone
let b = B doing it alone
:
Let the completed job = 1
:
Write a share work equation for the statement:
"A and B working together can finish a certain job in 20/3 hours."
 +  = 1
invert the divisor and multiply
 +  = 1
multiply by 3ab, results
20b + 20a = 3ab
:
" They start the work together but after 3 hours, A became ill and B continuing the work alone, finished it in 33/4 hours. How long would it take each working alone to do the job?"
:
Change 33/4 hrs to 8.25 hrs
B works 3 + 8.25 = 11.25 hrs
 +  = 1
multiply by ab to clear the denominators
3b + 11.25a = ab
:
Try to use elimination with these two equations
3b + 11.25a = ab
20b + 20a = 3ab
Multiply the 1st equation by 20, multiply the 2nd equation by 3
60b + 225a = 20ab
60b + 60a = 9ab
-----------------subtraction eliminates b
165a = 11ab
divide both side by a
165 = 11b
b = 165/11
b = 11 hrs working alone
:
Find a,
20b + 20a = 3ab
replace b with 11
20(11) + 20a = 3(a*11)
220 + 20a = 33a
220 = 33a - 20a
220 = 13a
a = 220/13
a = 16  hrs working alone

You can put this solution on YOUR website!A person covers half his journey by bus at 60 km/hr, half the remaining half by train at 30 km/hr and the rest by cycle at 10 km/hr. Find the average speed ?
:
Let j = total length of the journey
then
.5j = bus length
.25j = train length
.25j = bike length
:
let s = average speed of the whole journey
:
Write a time equation; time = dist/speed
:
bus time + train time + bike time = total time
 +  +  =
multiply by 60s to get rid of the denominators, results
.5js + 2(.25js) + 6(.25js) = 60j
.5js + .5js + 1.5js = 60j
2.5js = 60j
divide both sides by j
2.5s = 60
s = 60/2.5
s = 24 km/h, average speed for the trip

Answer 431193 by ankor@dixie-net.com(15667) on 2013-01-07 08:08:39 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!The present age of A and his father is in the ratio of 2:5 respectively.
 =
Cross multiply
5a = 2f
a =  f
a = .4f
:
4 years hence the ratio of their ages will become 5:11 respectively.
 =
cross multiply
11(a+4) = 5(f+4)
11a + 44 = 5f + 20
11a = 5f + 20 - 44
11a = 5f - 24
replace a with .4f
11(.4f) = 5f - 24
4.4f = 5f - 24
24 = 5f - 4.4
24 = .6f
f = 24/.6
f = 40 yrs is Dad's present age
then
a = .4(40)
a = 16 is A's present age

what was father's age 5 years ago? You can figure that out, I know

You can put this solution on YOUR website!a number of 3 digits is such hat the tens digit exceeds the unit digit by 2.
If this number exceeds the number formed by reversing the digits by 297
and if the sum of its digits is 14, find the number.
:
Let a = the 100's digit
Let b = the 10's digit
Let c = the units
then
100a + 10b + c = "the 3digit number
and
100c + 10b + a = the number reversed
:
" the tens digit exceeds the unit digit by 2."
b = c+2
:
" If this number exceeds the number formed, by reversing the digits by 297"
100a + 10b + c = 100c + 10b + a + 297
Combine like terms
100a - a + 10b - 10b = 100c - c + 297
99a = 99c + 297
Simplify, divide by 99
a = c + 3
:
"the sum of its digits is 14,"
a + b + c = 14
replace a with (c+3), replace b with (c+2)
c + 3 + c + 2 + c = 14
3c + 5 = 14
3c = 14 - 5
c = 9/3
c = 3

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Two cars leave an intersection. One car travels North the other travels East.
When the car traveling North had gone 63 miles, the distance between the cars was 17 miles more than three times the distance traveled by the car heading East.
Find the distance between the cars at that time.
:
This is a Pythagoras problem a^2 + b^2 = c^2, where:
a = 63, northbound car dist)
b = Eastbound car dist
c = distance between the cars at this time
"the distance between the cars was 17 miles more than three times the distance traveled by the car heading East
c = 3b + 17
:
63^2 + b^2 = (3b+17)^2
FOIL the right side
3969 + b^2 = 9b^2 + 51b + 51b + 289
Combine like terms on the right
0 = 9b^2 - b^2 + 102b + 289 - 3969
0 = 8b^2 + 102b - 3680
Simplify, divide by 2
4b^2 + 51b - 1840 = 0
Use the quadratic formula to find b
the positive solution should be b = 16
then
3(16) + 17 = 65 mi is the distance between the cars at this time

Write two equations with difference slopes, but x1 = 3, y1 = -1 are the same
Using the form: y - y1 = m(x - x1)
:
y - (-1) = -3(x - 3)
y + 1 = -3x + 9
y = -3x + 9 - 1
y = -3x + 8; the 1st equation
and
y -(-1) = 2(x - 3)
y + 1 = 2x - 6
y = 2x - 6 - 1
y = 2x - 7; the 2nd equation

Graph these

You can see they intersect at 3, -1
