Ms. Driva Reck drove from her home to a service station at 48 km/h.
She returned home by bicycle at 16 km/h.
The entire trip took 4 hours. How far was the service station from Ms. Reck's home?
:
Let d = distance to the service station
:
Write a time equation: time = dist/time
:
to time + return time = 4 hrs
d%2F48 + d%2F16 = 4
Multiply by 48, to clear the denominators:
48*d%2F48 + 48*d%2F16 = 4(48)
d + 3d = 48(4)
4d = 192
d = 192/4
d = 48 km
:
:
Check this
48/48 + 48/3 =
1 + 3 = 4

It takes pump A 2 hours less time than pump B to empty a certain swimming pool.
Pump A is started at 8:00 A.M., and pump B is started at 11:00 A.M.
If the pool is still half full at 5:00 P.M., then how long would it take pump A working alone?
:
Let t = time required by pump A working alone
then
(t+2) = time required by pump B working alone
:
Pump A: 8 AM to 5 PM: 9 hrs,
Pump B: 11Am to 5 PM: 6 hrs
:
Let the empty pool = 1, then a half full pool = 1%2F2
:
9%2Ft + 6%2F%28%28t%2B2%29%29 = 1%2F2
Multiply by 2t(t+2), results:
9(2(t+2)) + 6(2t) = t(t+2)
18(t+2) + 12t = t^2 + 2t
18t + 36 + 12t = t^2 + 2t
30t + 36 = t^2 + 2t
A quadratic equation
t^2 + 2t - 30t - 36 = 0
t^2 - 28t - 36 = 0
Use the quadratic formula to find t
x+=+%28-b+%2B-+sqrt%28+b%5E2-4%2Aa%2Ac+%29%29%2F%282%2Aa%29+
In this equation: x=t; a=1; b=-28; c=-36
x+=+%28-%28-28%29+%2B-+sqrt%28-28%5E2-4%2Aa%2A-36+%29%29%2F%282%2A1%29+
Do the math here, should get a positive solution of:
t = 29.23 hrs, Pump A will empty the pool alone
:
:
Check solution
9%2F29.23 + 6%2F31.23 =
.308 + .192 = .500 (a half full pool)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
if four people can repair a vehicle in 5 1/2 hours,
how many people working the same rate will it take to finish the job in 3 hours
:
Use man-hrs here
4 * 5.5 = 22 man-hrs to complete the job
:
let m = no. of men to complete the job in 3 hrs
3m = 22
m = 22%2F3
m = 71%2F3 men, maybe 6 men and boy

The area of a rectangle is five times the area of a square.
If the rectangle is 50 inches long, and the width of the rectangle is the same
as the length of a side of the square, find the dimensions of both the rectangle and the square.
:
Let s = side of the square, and width of the rectangle
then
s^2 = area of the square
and
50s = area of the rectangle
:
It says,"The area of a rectangle is five times the area of a square." therefore:
50s = 5s^2
divide both sides by 5s, results
10 = s
width of rect and side of square = 10 inches
:
10^2 = 100 sq/inches the area of the square
and
50*10 = 500 sq/inches the area of the rectangle (5 times the square)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
-2y = 2 - x
y has to be positive, multiply both sides by -1 and you have
2y = x - 2
divide both sides by 2, (x is understood to be 1x)
y = 1%2F2x - 1
or we could just write it
y = .5x - 1; this is the y=mx+b form, the slope is 1/2, or .5
:
Choose two values for x and find y, to get your points
x=4
y = .5(4) - 1
y = 2 - 1
y = 1
First point: 4, 1
and
x = -4
y = .5(-4) - 1
y = -2 - 1
y = -3
Second point: -4, -3
;
:
plot these two points, join with a straight line, should look like this:
+graph%28+300%2C+300%2C+-6%2C+6%2C+-6%2C+6%2C+.5x-1%29+
:
If we do this correctly, the slope will take care of itself
you can see it rises 1 unit for each 2 units of run

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
two digits, x & y
10x + y = the number
:
A two digit number is 4 times the sum of its digits
10x + y = 4(x+y)
10x + y = 4x + 4y
10x - 4x = 4y - y
6x = 3y
divide both sides by 3
2x = y
" and twice the product of its digit."
10x + y = 2xy
Replace y with 2x
10x + 2x = 2*x*2x
12x = 4x^2
Divide both sides by 4x
3 = x
then
y = 2(3)
y = 6
:
the number = 36
:
You can confirm this in both statement:
36 = 4(3+6)
and
36 = 2(3*6)

Two bicyclists, 42 miles apart, begin riding toward each other on a long straight avenue.
One cyclist travels 15 miles per hour and the other 20 miles per hour.
:
Find their travel time (t) when they meet
20t + 15t = 42
t = 42/35
t = 1.2 hrs
:
At the same time, Spot (a greyhound), starting at one cyclist, runs back and

If Spot runs 38 miles per hour and turns around instantly at each cyclist,
how far has he run when the cyclists meet?
:
Dog travels 38 mph for 1.2 hrs: 1.2*38 = 45.6 mi

A boat travels 27 miles downstream in 3 hours, and when traveling upstream
it takes twice as much time to travel 2/3 of that distance.
Find the rate of the boat in still water and the rate of the current.
:
Find the upstream distance: 2%2F3*27 = 18 miles
:
Let s = boat speed in still water
Let c = current speed
then
(s-c) = effective speed upstream
and
(s+c) = effective speed downstream
:
Write a distance equation for each way
:
3(s+c) = 27
6(s-c) = 18
Simplify both equations, divide the 1st by 3, and the 2nd by 6, results:
s + c = 9
s - c = 3
------------addition eliminates c, find s
2s = 12
s = 6 mph is the boat speed in still water
and
6 + c = 9
c = 3 mph is the current speed
:
:
Check solutions by finding the distance
3(6+3) = 27
6(6-3) = 18

round trip time: 24 hrs, which confirms our solution of x = 11 mph current

the distance between two towers is 150m, the points of support of the cable on
the towers are 22m above the roadway, and the lowest point on the cable is 7m above the roadway.
Find the vertical distance to the cable from a point in the roadway 15m from the foot of a tower.
:
The cable is a parabola; calculate a quadratic equation from the given dimensions
Using the form: ax^2 + bx + c = y
x=0, y = 22, therefore c = 22
:
x=75, y=7; (the midpoint)
75^2a + 75b + 22 = 7
5625a + 75b = 7 - 22
5625a + 75b = -15
and
x=150, y=22 (far end)
150^2a + 150b + 22 = 22
22500a + 150b = 22 - 22
22500a + 150b = 0
:
Use elimination on these two equations, multiply the 1s equation by 2
subtract from the above equation
22500a + 150b = 0
11250a + 150b = -30
-----------------------subtraction eliminates b, find a
11250a = 30
a = 30%2F11250
a = .002667
:
Find b
22500(.002667) + 150b = 0
60 + 150b = 0
150b = -60
b = %28-60%29%2F150
b = -.4

You can see the cable is about 7 meters above 0, crossing the vert at 22
:
Find the vertical dist (y) at 15 m from the base of the tower (x)
Substitute 15 for x in the equation
y = .00267(15^2) -.4(15) + 22
y = .00267(225) - 6 + 22
y = .6 - 6 + 22
y = 16.6 is the vertical height, 15 m from the tower

4)Find (a) the slope and (b) the y-intercept of the line with the equation 4x+2y=6.
Convert to the slope intercept form y = mx-b
4x + 2y = 6
2y = -4x + 6
divide both sides by 2
y = -2x + 3
(a) slope: -2
(b) y intercept + 3

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Four men working together can dig a ditch in 42 days.
Find the number of man-days to complete the job
4*42 = 168 man-days
:
They begin, but one man works only half-days.
How long will it take to complete the job?
Let d = no. days to complete the job
d(3 + .5) = 168
3.5d = 168
d = 168%2F3.5
d = 48 days

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A sprinter runs the 100-yd dash in 9.3 secs. At the same rate,
:
a. how long would it take the sprinter to run 100.0m?
:
Find his speed in meters/sec
Convert 100 yds to meters: 100 * .9144 = 91.44 meter
in 9.3 sec
91.44%2F9.3 = 9.832 meters/sec
then
100%2F9.832 = 10.17 sec to run 100 meters
;
:
b. What is the sprinters speed in meter per second? 9.832 m/sec (from above)
:
c. How long would it take the sprinter to run a distance of 1.45km?
:
If he could maintain this speed (which is doubtful):
1450%2F9.832 = 147.47 sec or 2 min 27.47 sec
