You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A quadratic equation is an equation involving the 2nd power, but no higher power,
of an unknown. The general form a^2 + bx + c = 0 (a, b, and c are known; x is
unknown) (a does not = 0). There are three ways to solve this kind of equation for x.
One way is to factor the left hand side, one is completing the square, and the
third is using the quadratic formula: x+=+%28-b+%2B-+sqrt%28+b%5E2-4%2Aa%2Ac+%29%29%2F%282%2Aa%29+

If one root of a quadratic equation is 1/2-2i, what is the equation?
x = 1%2F2 - 2i
We can write it
x = .5 - 2i
x - .5 = -2i
Square both sides, FOIL the left side
x^2 - 1x + .25 = 4i^2
we know i^2 = -1, therefore
x^2 - x + .25 = 4(-1)
x^2 - x + .25 = -4
x^2 - x + .25 + 4 = 0
x^2 - x + 4.25 = 0; the equation

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Find x and y intercepts and graph the equation plotting the intercepts,
show me how you do this step by step please. Create graph.
:
5x -6y = -45
:
The x intercept occurs when y = 0, replace y with 0 in the above equation
5x - 6(0) = -45
5x = -45
x = %28-45%29%2F5
x = -9 is the x intercept
:
The y intercept occurs when x = 0, replace x with 0 in the same equation
5(0) -6y = -45
-6y = -45
y has to be positive, multiply both sides by -1
6y = 45
y = 45%2F6 reduces to 15%2F2, therefore:
y = 7.5 is the y intercept
:
we can confirm this with a graph, put equation in to slope/intercept form
y = mx + b
5x - 6y = -45
subtract 5x from both sides
-6y = -5x - 45
get rid of the negative y, multiply both sides by -1
6y = 5x + 45
divide by 6
y = 5%2F6x - 45%2F6
reduce fraction
y = 5%2F6x - 15%2F2
y = 5%2F6x + 7.5
:
Plot this using x=-3 and x=+3
When x= -3
y = 5%2F6(-3) + 7.5
y = 5%2F%28-2%29 + 7.5
y = -2.5 + 7.5
y = 5
Ordered pair -3, 5
:
when x = +3
y = 5%2F6(3) + 7.5
y = 5%2F2 + 7.5
y = +2.5 + 7.5
y = 10
ordered pair 3, 10
:
Plot a straight line thru these to points should look like this
+graph%28+300%2C+200%2C+-10%2C+6%2C+-10%2C+10%2C+%285%2F6%29x%2B7.5%29+
You can see the intercepts are what we calculated them to be

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Beth is two years older than Julio.
Gerald is twice as old as Beth.
Debra is twice as old as Gerald.
The sum of their ages is 38.
How old is Beth?
:
write an equation for each statement, get everything in terms of b:
:
Beth is two years older than Julio.
b = j+2
or
j = (b-2)
:
Gerald is twice as old as Beth.
g = 2b
:
Debra is twice as old as Gerald.
d = 2g
Replace g with 2b
d = 2(2b)
d = 4b
:
The sum of their ages is 38.
b + j + g + d = 38
Replace j, g, d
b +(b-2) + 2b + 4b = 38
8b = 38 + 2
b = 40%2F8
b = 5 yrs is Beth's age
:
:
Check solution by finding the total
5 + 3 + 10 + 20 = 38, confirms our solution of b=5

The Smith family and the Jones family are next-door neighbors and are driving to Las Vegas in separate cars for vacation. They are traveling on the same road in
the same direction. The Smith family leaves at 8:00am and drives 70mph.
Because of a luggage malfunction, the Jones family leaves at 10:00 am and drives
20% faster than the Smith family in an attempt to catch them.
;
A. How long will it take the Jones family to catch the Smith family?
Let t = travel time of Jones
then
(t+2) = travel time of Smith
:
Find Jones' speed: 1.2(70) = 84 mph
:
When J catches S, they will have traveled the same distance
write a distance equation Dist = speed * time
:
84t = 70(t+2)
84t = 70t + 140
84t - 70t = 140
14t = 140
t = 140%2F14
t = 10 hrs is Jones travel time
:
B.At what time of day will this occur?
10 Am + 10 hrs = 8 Pm
:
C. How far from the starting point will they be when the Jones family catches the Smith Family?
84 * 10 = 840 mi
:
Confirm this by finding the dist of the Smiths
70 * 12 = 840 mi

A labourer is engaged for 20 days on the condition that he will receive for Rs.
60 for each day he works and will be fined Rs. 5 for each day he is absent.
If he receives Rs. 745 in all, for how many days did he remain absent.
:
Let a = number of days absent
then
(20-a) = number of days worked
:
Pay amt - fine amt = 745
60(20-a) - 5a = 745
1200 - 60a - 5a = 745
-65a = 745 - 1200
-65a = -455
a = %28-455%29%2F%28-65%29
a = 7 days absent

:
Check this, he worked 13 days so we have:

It sounds like the teachers have let you down in the early grades. You should not have that much trouble understanding. Ask to go to normal, rather than gifted classes in August, insist on it. See how you do. Those gifted classes, teachers often think, "these kids are smart, I won't have to explain things to them" and they get lazy. Have your parents pick some work books designed for summer at your grade level, insist that your parents help you with them. You will feel much better if you go into the 6th grade knowing what to expect.

Ms Cavazzi will build a frame out of wood. The Frame will have a 2 inch border.
The area of that entire Portrait will cover is 272 inches square.
Find the dimensions of the picture.
:
A 2" border will add 4" to each picture dimension
therefore
(x+2) + 4 = (x+6); overall length
(x+1) + 4 = (x+5); overall width
:
Entire area
(x+6)*(x+5) = 272
FOIL
x^2 + 6x + 5x + 30 = 272
x^2 + 11x + 30 - 272 = 0
x^2 + 11x - 242 = 0
You can solve this using the quadratic formula: a=1; b=11; c=-242
But it will factor to
(x+22)(x-11) = 0
the positive solution
x = 11
therefore
11 + 2 = 13" is the length of the picture
11 + 1 = 12" is the width
:
:
Check this by finding the overall area with these values
(13+4)*(12+4) = 272

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let b = Bob's present age
Let d = dad's present age
:
Write an equation for each statement:
:
"bob is one third the age of his dad."
b = 1%2F3d
Multiply by 3 to get rid of the fraction, results
3b = d
:
"in 12 years he will be half his age"
b + 12 = 1%2F2(d+12)
multiply by 2, to get rid of the fraction, results
2(b+12) = d + 12
2b + 24 = d + 12
2b = d + 12 - 24
2b = d - 12
Replace d with 3b, from the 1st statement:
2b = 3b - 12
12 = 3b - 2b
b = 12 yrs is bob's present age
:
I'll let you find dad's age, check the solution in the 2nd statement

The amount remaining of a certain radioactive substance after t days is
A(t) = A*e^(-0.0025t) where A is the beginning amount.
How much do we need to begin with if we want 80 grams after 10 days?
:
write the equation:
A*e^(-0.0025t) = A(t)
Given values:
A(t) = 80
t = 10
Replace A(t) and t and we have:
A*e^(-0.0025*10) = 80
:
A*e^(-0.025) = 80
Find e^-.025 on a calc, then we have:
.97531A = 80
A = 80%2F.97531
A = 82.025 grams will decay to 80 grams in 10 days
;
:
Check this on a calc: enter: 82.025*e^(-.0025*10): results: 79.9998 ~ 80
:
How about this? Did we shed some light on this stuff for you?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1.3x=7
divide both sides by 3
x = 7%2F3
:
2.12(x+5)=3(7+4x)
multiply whats inside the brackets
12x + 60 = 21 + 12x
Combine like terms
12x - 12x = 21 - 60
0 = -39, obviously not a valid equation
:
3. 5(x-3)=2x-3(x+1)
5x - 15 = 2x - 3x - 3; neg outside the brackets, changes the sign inside
5x - 15 = -x - 3
5x + x = -3 + 15
6x = 12
divide both sides by 6
x = 12%2F6
x = 2
Check solution in original equation
5(2-3)=2(2)-3(2+1)
5(-1) = 4 -3(3)
-5 = 4 -9

Write it:
x^4 - 43x^2 + 450 = 0
This will factor to
(x^2 - 18)(x^2 - 25) = 0
