You can put this solution on YOUR website!
over a distance a car traveling 40 mph,
the car then drives that same distance 10 mph,
what is the average mph for the whole trip?
:
let d = the distance traveled at 40 mph and the distance traveled at 10 mph
let a = the average mph for the trip
:
Write a time equation; time = dist/speed
:
40mph time + 10mph time = total time
d%2F40 + d%2F10 = %282d%29%2Fa
multiply by 40a, to clear the denominators
40a*d%2F40 + 40a*d%2F10 = 40a*%282d%29%2Fa
Cancel the denominators
ad + 4ad = 40(2d)
5ad = 80d
divide both sides by d
5a = 80
a = 80/5
a = 16 mph is the average for the trip
:
Was this detailed enough for you? C

Expressions-with-variables/654691: I dont understand how to do this equations with variables on both sides:

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
-2(k-8) + 7k = -2 - k
multiply whats inside the brackets
-2k + 16 + 7k = - 2 - k
Combine the k's on the left
-2k + 7k + k + 16 = -2
6k + 16 = -2
Subtract 16 from both sides
6k = -2 - 16
6k = -18
k = -18/6
k = -3
:
:
Check solution in the original equation
-2(-3 - 8) + 7(-3) = -2 -(-3)
-2(-11) - 21 = -2 + 3
+22 - 21 = -2 + 3
1 = 1; confirms our solution of k=-3

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
One number is 5 greater than another number.
If the smaller number is added to twice the larger number, the answer is 28.
Find the two numbers.
:
Let a = one number
let b = another number
:
Write an equation for each statement:
"One number is 5 greater than another number."
a = b+5
:
"If the smaller number is added to twice the larger number, the answer is 28."
b + 2a = 28
:
Replace a with (b+5), from the 1st statement
b + 2(b+5) = 28
b + 2b + 10 = 28
3b = 28 - 10
3b = 18
b = 18/3
b = 6
I'll let you find a
:
Check the solutions in the 2nd statement

See I'm trying to help my son who's always been in special ed in elementary
and has had one on one help on his math and reading.
So now that he's in jr. high it hard for him, and for me to couse I don't
know how to do this kind of math myself. Here's one of the problems
3.5 divided by -4
:
You have to use long division here, place the decimal in the answer above the
number you are dividing
When a positive number is divided by a negative number the answer will always,
be negative. Add some zeros to 3.5
:
using periods here to keep things lined up
:
..... -0.875
.......-------
-4 |3.5000
.........32
........---- 4 goes into 35, 8 times with a remainder of 3, bring down the 0
...........30
...........28
...........---- 4 goes into 30, 7 times with a remainder of 2, bring down the 0
............20
............20
............---- 4 goes into 20, exactly 5 times, no remainder, so we're done

:
:
you can check this on your calc, enter -.875 * -4, results: 3.5

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
a restaurant manager bought 80 lb of hamburger and 30 lb of steak for a total
cost of 163 a second purchase at the same prices includes 150 lb of hamburger
and 50 lb of steak and costs 290 find price of 1 lb of hamburger
:
let h = cost per pound for hamburger
let s = cost per pound for steak
:
Write a total cost equation for each order
80h + 30s = 163
150h + 50s = 290
:
We are going to us elimination; mult the 1st eq by 5, the 2nd eq by 3, results:
400h + 150s = 815
450h + 150s = 870
------------------subtraction eliminates s, find h
-50h + 0 = -55
h = -55/-50
h = $1.10 a pound for hamburger
__________________________________________________________________________
a coin bank contains only dimes and quarters the total value is 3.70.
if the dimes were quarters and the quarters were dimes the total value
would be 2.95 find the number of quarters
:
Let x = original number of dimes
Let y = original number of quarters
:
Write an equation for each scenario
.10x + .25y = 3.70
.25x + .10y = 2.95
:
Using elimination again, mult the 1st equation by 5, the 2nd eq by 2
.50x + 1.25y = 18.50
.50x + .20y = 5.90
-------------------subtraction eliminates x, find y (quarters)
0 + 1.05y = 12.60
y = 12.6/1.05
y = 12 quarters
:
You should check both these problems by finding the other variable value.
Then substitute the values in the original equations, to see if it is true.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Find the value of k so that the line containing the points (-4,k) and (8,-4)
is perpendicular to the line y=2/5x+4.
:
The slope of the given equation: m1 = 2%2F5
Find the slope (m2) of the given coordinates
The slope formula m = %28y2-y1%29%2F%28x2-x1%29
Assign the values as follows
x1=-4, y1=k
x2=8, y2=-4
m2 = %28-4-k%29%2F%288-%28-4%29%29 = %28%28-4-k%29%29%2F12
:
We know the slope relationship between perpendicular lines is m1*m2 = -1
2%2F5*%28%28-4-k%29%29%2F12 = -1
cancel 2 into 12
1%2F5*%28%28-4-k%29%29%2F6 = -1
%28%28-4-k%29%29%2F30 = -1
multiply both sides by -30, also gets rid of all those negatives
4 + k = 30
k = 30 - 4
k = 26
:
Use this value for y1, find the slope (m2) of the new equation,
Find the equation using the point/slope formula, y-y1 = m(x-x1)
See that it is perpendicular to y = 2%2F5x + 4

Find the total volume required: .668 * 247 ~ 165 cu/ft
:
Let x = the multiplier, then
1x = amt of b
3x = amt of a

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
a 3% salt solution is mixed with a 9% salt solution.
how many grams of the 9% salt solution were used to make 150 g of a 4% salt solution?
:
We convert the per cent to the decimal equiv.
In this case we write a amt of salt equation, the amt of salt of the two
solutions, equal amt in the resulting solution
:
Let x = grams of 9% solution required
the result will be 150 grams, therefore
(150-x) = grams of 3% solution
:
.09x + .03(150-x) = .04(150)
.09x + 4.5 - .03x = 6
.09x - .03x = 6 - 4.5
.06x = 1.5
x = 1.5/.06
x = 25 grams of 9% solution required, which is what they asked
then we would like to know
150 - 25 = 125 grams of 3% solution
:
:
We can confirm this solution by finding the actual amt of salt in each solution,
see if it adds up to the amt of salt in the resulting solution
.09(25) + .03(125) = .04(150)
2.25 + 3.75 = 6; proves we have good answer

This is a typical mixture equation, can be applied to most mixture problems.
Always a good idea, when you get the answer, to check it as we did here.

:
I am going to say 3/5 * 1000 = 600 mi per tire, or 3000 tire-miles divided by 5,
also gives 600 mi per tire.:
To rotate the tires:
replace tire 1 with tire 4 after 400 mi, tire 1 has 200 mi left on it
replace tire 2 with tire 5 after 400 mi, tire 2 has 200 mi left on it
replace tire 3 with tire 1 after 600 mi, at 800 mi replace tire 1 with tire 2

Exponents/652291: Hi. I am an 8th grader in an honors math class. Right now I have below a 70 and have to atleast have an 80 To stay in the class. My final dates are oct, 1&2. I understand all of the material but when we take test or quizzes I either make lots of dumb mistakes or freak out and get it wrong. Any advice?

One of the things that you can do with equations in algebra, is check your answer
in the original problem, for instance if you get x = 4, replace x in the original
problem with 4 and see if equality is preserved, (right side value = left side value.) Do this for every equation problem that you have, both homework and in the final. You will find math mistakes and other errors this way.
:
If the problem is not an equation, an expression that you must simplify, then
assign a value (like 2) to the variables in the original expression, find the value. Do the same with your simplified expression, they should be equal
:
Sometimes assigning a value of 2 will cause you to have a 0 in the denominator;
This of course is not allowed. Then assign another value like 3 and do the same
thing

Travel_Word_Problems/652094: A stream with a velocity of 1/4 mile per hour can move coarse sand particles about 0.02 inch in diameter. Approximate the velocity required to carry particles 0.12 inch in diameter. Use the fact that the diameter of the largest particle that can be moved by a stream varies approximately directly as the square of the velocity of the stream.

:
let v = velocity of the stream; change 1/4 to .25
:
Write a proportion equation
v%5E2%2F.25%5E2 = .12%2F.02
v%5E2%2F.0625 = 6
v = sqrt%28.0625%2A6%29
v = .612 mph

An aircraft carrier left the Pier 53 and traveled north.
A container ship left 1 hour later traveling at 3km/h faster in an effort to
catch up to the aircraft carrier.
After traveling for 5 hours the container ship finally caught up.
What was the aircraft carrier's average speed?
:
Let s = the carrier's speed
then
(s+3) = container ship's speed
:
When the container catches the carrier, they will have traveled the same dist
Write a dist equation; dist = time * speed
The carrier traveled for 1 hr longer, 6 hrs
6s = 5(s+3)
6s = 5s + 15
6s - 5s = 15
s = 15 km/hr is the carrier speed
:
:
Check this by finding the distances
Carrier: 6(15) = 90 km
Container: 5(18) = 90 km
